Any errors, of course remain my own. 1 Filming female desire: Queering the gaze of pop music videos Abstract This paper examines the queer gaze within pop music videos. It contends that the contemporary US musician Hayley Kiyoko can be seen as a queer music video auteur who has transformed what the ‘gaze’ can mean in mainstream pop music through directing her own videos. The paper asserts that through her performance within and, arguably even more significantly, via her direction of videos, Kiyoko has produced a new and complex portrayal of how female sexual desire is represented even when, on the surface, it may not necessarily appear to disrupt normativity. Reaction videos made by Kiyoko’s fans have also queered the gaze whereby the ‘watcher’ becomes the ‘watched’. The paper concludes that online spaces and digital technologies are radically reshaping understandings of queer sexuality in music videos.

The alliance’s statewide online auction in April raised $180,000 for Red Cross preparedness efforts and response programs in California. Auction proceeds will be presented through a check to Red Cross during the popular Wango Tango event in Los Angeles this Saturday, May 12. Wango Tango is an annual day-long concert that features several performers and draws sellout crowds. “This first-time statewide online auction attracted more interest than we imagined possible,” said American Red Cross Los Angeles Region Chapter CEO Paul Schulz. “In addition to raising over $180,000, the auction and the CEA and Red Cross alliance helped Californians learn how to prepare to survive and recover from California’s next damaging earthquake.” The auction, which concluded on April 27, 2012, included a new car; expense-paid trips to meet and attend concerts for award winning country singer Taylor Swift in Ottawa (Canada), Celine Dion in Las Vegas, Coldplay in Paris, teen heartthrobs One Direction in Los Angeles; as well as a celebrity-escorted visit to Six Flags Magic Mountain.

Campbell and Ayşe Barut Across multiple social media platforms, the hashtag #djlife has offered a glimpse into what DJs do in both their online and offline lives. Some DJs post their remixes, others post their practice sessions or their latest booking. Globally, as nightclubs closed their doors and festivals cancelled their 2020 editions in response to COVID-19, DJs were forced to reconsider how to maintain their livelihoods. Like most performers in popular culture, the DJ’s public visibility is tied to their continued relevance, so with two major arenas—festivals and nightclubs—closed, DJs had to quickly find a way to engage their fans. For many DJs, livestreaming themselves mixing records became a way to continue connecting with their fans. While several DJs were already livestreaming, such as DJ Mel Boogie on her Toronto-based radio show Studio B on Vibe 105 FM, many more delved into streaming for the first time during the pandemic. Platforms such as Facebook and Instagram became the go-to sites for various kinds of livestream events during the pandemic. Consequentially, while the role of album art has evolved to meet the changes in music technology, it is hard to measure the effect of digital streaming on modern album art. This research seeks to determine whether or not graphic design still plays a role in marketing information about the music, such as its genre, to the consumer. It does so through two studies: 1. A computer visual analysis that measures color dominance of an image, and 2. A mixed-design lab experiment with volunteer participants who attempt to assess the genre of a given album. Findings from the first study show that color scheme models created from album samples cannot be used to predict the genre of an album. Further findings from the second theory show that consumers pay a significant amount of attention to album covers, enough to be able to correctly assess the genre of an album most of the time.
