The Publishers of the 1723 Book of Constitutions Andrew Prescott he advertisements in the issue of the London newspaper, The Evening Post, for 23 February 1723 were mostly for recently published books, including a new edition of the celebrated directory originally compiled by John Chamberlayne, Magnae Britanniae Notitia, and books offering a new cure for scurvy and advice Tfor those with consumption. Among the advertisements for new books in The Evening Post of 23 February 1723 was the following: This Day is publiſh’d, † || § The CONSTITUTIONS of the FREE- MASONS, containing the Hiſtory, Charges, Regulations, &c., of that moſt Ancient and Right Worſhipful Fraternity, for the Uſe of the Lodges. Dedicated to his Grace the Duke of Montagu the laſt Grand Maſter, by Order of his Grace the Duke of Wharton, the preſent Grand Maſter, Authoriz’d by the Grand Lodge of Maſters and War- dens at the Quarterly Communication. Ordered to be publiſh’d and recommended to the Brethren by the Grand Maſter and his Deputy. Printed for J. Senex, and J. Hooke, both over againſt St Dunſtan’s Church, Fleet-ſtreet. An advertisement in similar terms, also stating that the Constitutions had been pub- lished ‘that day’, appeared in The Post Boy of 26 February, 5 March and 12 March 1723 Volume 121, 2008 147 Andrew J. Prescott and TheLondon Journal of 9 March and 16 March 1723. The advertisement (modified to ‘just publish’d’) continued to appear in The London Journal until 13 April 1723. The publication of The Constitutions of the Free-Masons, or the Book of Constitutions as it has become generally known, was a fundamental event in the development of Grand Lodge Freemasonry, and the book remains an indispensable source for the investigation of the growth of Freemasonry in the first half of the eighteenth century. -

Mount a couple of quadrupeds, or one if it carries double and high away to the reverend Rigdom Funnydose there to be merry, facetious, mad and nonsensical. ' ROBIN SIMON: Well they were certainly facetious. The house party acted, at least to their great enjoyment, what was described as a little bawdy play by Garrick, entitled Rag-and-jaw – rag and jaw. At this stage I think I ought to make one thing clear about Georgian life and humour, it’s, well how shall we put it, very down to earth. And so if you wish you may put your hands over your ears now. Rag-and-jaw is a skit upon the relationship between Brutus and Cassius in Julius Caesar, only now of course inevitably the characters are Brute-arse and Cassy-arse. I didn't say that Georgian, Georgian hjour was subtle. <Footer addr ess> Accompanied by Lucius, oh sorry Loose-arse. Garrick played Cassy-arse and the reverend John Hoadly was Brute-arse. -

Wayne Spring Beacon Court Lodge 1967 – IPM and Lodge Mentor Pentangle Lodge 1174 - JD East Kent Masters Lodge 3931 - Steward Norman Chapter 3502 – Principal Sojourner Word count: 1,540 THE THREE GREAT LIGHTS The Three Great Lights the fundamental objects in Freemasonry. To the uninitiated this bears no meaning; to a brother a way of life. Their importance is highlighted when the Worshipful Master directs attention to the Three Great Lights in Freemasonry, the VSL, The Square and the Compasses. The most important of these is the Volume of the Sacred Law1,2 an indispensable part of the Lodge. The open Bible signifies that we should regulate our conduct according to it. The teachings are to rule and guide our faith, a symbol of man's acknowledgment of his relationship to Deity. Upon the formation of the United Grand Lodge of England, the first ‘Constitution’ detailed the important relationship in the ‘Aims and Relations of the Craft’3. Without familiarisation to the BoC4, a brother understands the importance of the VSL from the ritual. A newly made brother is not presented a copy of the BoC until the end of the initiation degree. During the ceremony he will be informed that “It teaches us the important duties we owe to God, to our neighbour and to ourselves.5” The candidate is informed that it is the unerring standard of Truth and Justice and that it is to rule and govern our faith. 1 Hereinafter referred to as the VSL. 2 No matter what religion 3 The first condition of admission into, and membership of, the Order is belief in the Supreme Being; the Bible, the Volume of the Sacred Law, is always open in Lodges. -

Best known for his humorous political commentary, Hogarth’s work engaged a broad audience and agitated for legislative and social change. His intricate drawings and richly anecdotal scenes depict the ills and injustices of eighteenth-century urban life, exploring the connections between violence, crime, alcohol abuse, and cruelty to animals. He hoped his William Hogarth (1697–1764), Detail of Fourth Stage of Cruelty, 1750–51, red chalk, some graphite, on paper, incised with stylus. Opening May 24, Hogarth: Cruelty and Humor tells the story of Hogarth’s iconic images and the social realities of life in Georgian London that inspired him to advocate for reform through popular works of art. It is the first show at the Morgan devoted to this artist, whose style was so influential in British art that the word “Hogarthian” remains a recognizable way of describing works of satire. Featuring over twenty works, the show investigates Hogarth’s creative process and examines his embrace of humor, highlighting the Morgan’s exceptional cache of preparatory drawings for his two most acclaimed print series from 1751: Beer Street and Gin Lane, and The Stages of Cruelty. -

Passione, PM The United Grand Lodge of England (“UGLE”), and current Freemasons’ Hall, is located on Great Queen Street in the heart of London. A Masonic hall, in one form or another, has stood in this location since 1775, and the current Freemasons’ Hall was constructed in 1933. Incredibly, the building escaped the bombings of World War II virtually unscathed. Freemasons’ Hall is not only home to more than 20 functional lodge rooms, including the stunning Grand Temple (or Grand Lodge) room, but also a Masonic library and museum of Freemasonry. The museum has recently been redesigned to highlight Freemasonry through the ages, specifically within the 300 years since the establishment of the original Grand Lodge of England. United Grand Lodge of England, 60 Great Queen Street, London, UK The Grand Lodge of England, which recently celebrated its tercentenary, was originally established in 1717; and in 1723, published the first “Constitutions of the Free-Masons.” Around 1751, a divide occurred between the membership and the Grand Lodge split into two separate Grand Lodges; the Grand Lodge of England (also known as the Moderns) and the Ancient Grand Lodge (also known as the Ancients). The divide 1 between the Moderns and the Ancients stemmed from disagreements over the nature of the Masonic ritual1, where the Moderns sought to modernize the ritual and place less focus on ritual overall. -

Bodies of Knowledge: The Presentation of Personified Figures in Engraved Allegorical Series Produced in the Netherlands, 1548-1600 Abstract During the second half of the sixteenth century, engraved series of allegorical subjects featuring personified figures flourished for several decades in the Low Countries before falling into disfavor. Designed by the Netherlandsâ?? leading artists and cut by professional engravers, such series were collected primarily by the urban intelligentsia, who appreciated the use of personification for the representation of immaterial concepts and for the transmission of knowledge, both in prints and in public spectacles. The pairing of embodied forms and serial format was particularly well suited to the portrayal of abstract themes with multiple components, such as the Four Elements, Four Seasons, Seven Planets, Five Senses, or Seven Virtues and Seven Vices. While many of the themes had existed prior to their adoption in Netherlandish graphics, their pictorial rendering had rarely been so pervasive or systematic. -
