ABSTRACT WHY WE TURN THE PAGE: A LITERARY THEORY OF DYNAMIC STRUCTURALISM Justin J. J. Ness, Ph.D. Department of English Northern Illinois University, 2019 David J. Gorman, Director This study claims that every narrative text intrinsically possesses a structure of fixed relationships among its interest components. The progress of literary structuralism gave more attention to the static nature of what a narrative is than it did to the dynamic nature of how it operates. This study seeks to build on the work of those few theorists who have addressed this general oversight and to contribute a more comprehensive framework through which literary critics may better chart the distinct tensions that a narrative text cultivates as it proactively produces interest to motivate a reader’s continued investment therein. This study asserts that the interest in narrative is premised on three affects— avidity, anxiety, and curiosity—and that tensions within the text are developed through five components of discourse: event, description, dialog, sequence, and presentation. Ben Jonson’s Works, published in 1616, included all his comedies written that far, and meant an important precedent which helped to establish drama as lit- erary kind comparable to the rest of literature. Before that date, drama was regarded as un- worthy of the name of literature, and Jonson was the first to give it its new dignity. His comedies written after 1616 were usually published immediately after they were acted. Jonson’s theoretical interests were an expression of his intellectual aristocratism and his realistic temperament. He took pride in being able to create comedies according to the best scientific rules, and felt superior to those who made them by sheer talent. Jonson was the only theoretician among the English Renaissance dramatists, but although he was ready to fight for his rules, his application of them was broad and elastic. In his comedies there are many departures from classical models, often modified by his keen observation of every- day English life. The theory he adhered to was an abstract and rigid kind of realism, which in his practice was transformed by his gift of observation and his moral zeal into a truly realistic and satirical comic vision of life. A past Broadway Billboard at Socrates Sculpture Park. Occasionally people have asked, and I myself have pondered: how does Socrates relate to our struggles and daily lives? Our staff, artists, volunteers, partners and board of trustees work very hard to activate this small part of the city, but what “real” impact does it have? An answer, I think, comes from a deeper understanding of what our fundamental necessities are. There is generally an accepted hierarchy of human needs that starts with survival concerns like food and shelter. This continues with another level of imperatives such as safety and health, and then a bit further with notions of freedom, esteem, and self-determination. Art in this comparative context can seem to be far down the priority list of what we consider essential. But before there were religions, governments, forms of commerce, or even written languages as we now know them, there was, and is, a deep-seated need for humans to create and surround ourselves with art (e.g., drawings and sculpture made 35,000 years ago.) Art is not, as I have heard described sometimes, an “amenity,” something secondary to a primary need. Safety, freedom, health, and education, along with a host of other needs, are critically essential, but art can be and often is on par with these. -

Indian cinema is a subject about which conceptions are still muddy, even within prominent academic circles. The majority of the recent critical work on the subject endeavors to correct misconceptions, analyze cinematic norms and lay down the theoretical foundations for Indian cinema. -
Types of Comedy for Drama Class
Types of Comedy for Drama Class Studying comedy can be o ne of the most enjoyable units of work in any high school drama program. One of the advantages of comedy is there are so many sub genres of this form that can be isolated for investigation and performance at different levels of schooling. I find the more visual and physical forms of comedy are enjoyed by junior students, while understandably senior students often find literary and sophisticated forms of comedy rich and rewarding in their drama studies. One of the main challenges of studying comedy is that the end product should not just be entertaining, but humorous for the audience. Considering the audience is usually students’ peers in their own classroom, they often discover it is a fine line between being funny or embarrassed when the humour falls flat. So, creating a culture of acceptance in your drama classroom where students will not ridicule those who take a risk with their comedy performances, is essential. Below I have compiled a 30 different comedy forms with my own descriptions, suggested year levels at which to study them in drama, plus links to relevant published articles on The Drama Teacher. Low Comedy requires little skill in the scripting (if there is a script at all). Often a visual or highly physical work. Appropriate for all year levels. Slapstick is knockabout, physical humour. Media examples include The Three Stooges, The Marx Bros, Laurel and Hardy and Mr Bean. Appropriate for all year levels. Farce involves ridiculous, improbable situations. Media examples include Fawlty Towers and Monty Python.
