The symposium was started off by Mr. Nakin Sung, President of SNU, with a congratulatory message. Next, Professor Cheolhee Park, Dean of SNU GSIS, explained the objectives of the symposium. Following that, each graduate school representative presented on advanced topics related to their school’s fields of study. The SNU Excellence in Teaching Award is awarded to ten professors, who are selected by students, colleagues, and members of the university, for their excellence in teaching, student guidance, and other educational activities. Professor Jeong was recognized for his contribution to SNU’s International Education by initiating, designing and operating the “SNU in the World” Programs. Upon receiving the award, he donated KRW 10,000,000 (half of the award amount) to GSIS to support education and research programs. 4 Graduate School of International Studies, Seoul National University NEWSLETTER Vol. 8 No. 2 Fall, 2017 Global Perspective Professor Jong-Ho Jeong’s Special Lecture Professor Jong-Ho Jeong, the recipient of the SNU Excellence in Teaching Award, held a special lecture on December 5th, 2017, at the Center for Teaching and Learning. Professor Jeong lectured on “Seoul National University’s Vision and Strategy for Global Education.” The lecture was composed of not only students and professors from SNU GSIS, but from other departments as well. Together they deliberated on the future global education of Seoul National University. CNAS-GSIS Dialogue Next Generation National Security Leaders On November 13th, 2017, SNU GSIS welcomed twenty-two Next Generation National Security Leaders, sponsored by the Korea Foundation, from Washington, DC, United States, visiting on behalf of the Center for a New American Century (CNAS). Headed by Dr. Patrick M. Cronin, Senior Advisor and Director at CNAS, the visiting members were composed of incumbent researchers, government officials, journalists, and experts based in Washington DC, specializing on East Asian regional affairs. SNU GSIS Dean Cheolhee Park, SNU GSIS Professor Seongho Sheen, and Professor Jaeho Chung, from the Department of Political Science and International Relations, gave 10-15 minutes talking points on contemporary Korea-Japan, Korea-US, and Korea-China issues followed up by an open Q&A session and discussion from the floor. 5 Graduate School of International Studies, Seoul National University NEWSLETTER Vol. 8 No. 2 Fall, 2017 GSIS Events GSIS Events 5th FTA Commerce & Strategy Seminar Series On November 14th, 2017, the 5th FTA Commerce & Strategy Seminar Series was held at SNU GSIS. Dr. Kyungim Ryu from Korea Testing Certification (KTC) gave a lecture on “Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT).” Dr. Ryu referred to her experiences during the Korea-US FTA negotiations when she worked at the Korean Agency for Technology and Standards. She also responded to questions put forth by students and addressed concerns relating to the newly emerging TBT standards in the service sector and issues related to the renegotiation of the KOR-US FTA. 3rd FTA Symposium On December 18th, 2017, FTA Commerce and Strategy Program hosted the 2017 GSIS FTA Commerce & Strategy Academic Conference for Young Scholars and invited five experts to give academic presentations under the topic, “Korea’s Trade Policy at the Age of Uncertainty.” Session I invited Professor Hyoyoung Lee, from the Korea National Diplomatic Academy, and Dr. Minjung Kim from Seoul National University Asia Center. Session II continued with Mr. Dongchul Kwak, from the Institute for International Trade of Korea International Trade Association, and Mr. Jeongjoon Park with Ms. Kyounghwa Kim from the Center for International Commerce & Strategy of SNU GSIS. 6 Graduate School of International Studies, Seoul National University NEWSLETTER Vol. 8 No. 2 Fall, 2017 GSIS Events 3rd African Union Conference Ilsu Kim, the President of the Korea-Africa Center emphasized the importance of human resource considering the economic relationship between Africa and South Korea in his opening remarks. Director Yongmin Park of Africa/ Middle East Division in Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Professor Cheolhee Park, Dean of SNU GSIS, delivered welcoming remarks, followed by congratulatory speeches by H.E. Mohamed Gello, Ambassador of Kenya and H.E. Chafik Rachadi, Ambassador of Morocco. Nineteen master students from African countries, Algeria, Botswana, Ethiopia, Ghana, Guinea, Kenya, Libya, Morocco, The Korea-Africa Center, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nigeria, South Africa, South Sudan, Zimbabwe in the and SNU GSIS have co-hosted the 3rd Model African Union Development Cooperation Policy Program(DCPP) of SNU Conference at SNU GSIS on November 3rd and 4th, 2017.     EXCHANGE REPORT – FALL 2016 Student ID 381622 Seoul National University at a Glance SNU is the top ranked university in South Korea. There are annually about 600 exchange students from all over the world. The main campus is located close to Gwanaksan mountain in the south part of Seoul. SNU is one of the three partner universities in South Korea for the Aalto students offering both undergraduate and graduate exchange. The home department for the exchange students will be the College of Business Administration (=CBA) which host about 80 – 150 exchange students in every semester. In this report, I will introduce you the SNU studies and preparations for the exchange but also my own experiences about living in Seoul during the fall semester 2016. 1. PREPARING FOR THE EXCHANGE After receiving information from home university that they have nominated you to Seoul National University you will soon receive an email from SNU Office of Int'l Relations or CBA’s coordinator. I received it this year March 22nd and it included the information how to proceed with application process. About SNU application process This process included handling many documents and application process will be finished by post- mailing documents to Korea. There is approximately one month time to finish online application and send documents (before end on April if your exchange semester is fall). To complete the first phase, online application, prepare the following documents and upload them (excluding recommendation letters) on online application page.     ANNEX_Design Seoul Report UNESCO CITY OF DESIGN SEOUL DESIGN SEOUL REPORT ABOUT SEOUL Location At 126 degrees east longitude and at 37 degrees north latitude Climate Seoul has clearly distinguished 4 seasons of Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter with the average temperature of 12.2°C. During the summer season, the temperature in the city may reach as high as 38.4°C with temperature falling as low as -19.2°C during the winter, showing significant climatic changes between the seasons. The average rainfall in Seoul remains steady at 1,344.2mm per year, which is somewhat higher than the average rainfall in penin- sulas. The majority of the rainfall, approximately 70%, is concentrated during the months of June through September. Other than this rain season, Seoul boasts clear weather throughout the year with blue sky as part of Seoul’s beautiful and renowned sceneries. Area The total surface area of Seoul is 605.52m2, which makes up 0.6% of the entire surface area of Korea. The city is mainly divided into to regions of Gangbuk and Gangnam, separated by the Hangang. The Gangbuk occupies 297.97m2 (49.2%) and Gangnam takes up 307.55m2 (50.8%) of Seoul. The satellite cities of Gyeonggi-do, Goyang-si, Yangju-gun, and Euijungbu-si are situated to the north of Seoul. To the East, the Seongnam-si, Gwacheon-si and Anyang-si borders Seoul and to its west, Gwangmyeong-si, Bucheon-si and Kimpo-si are positioned. Bordering Cities And Counties Gyeonggi-do: Goyang city, Yangju-gun (county) and Euijeongbu city to the north: Namyangju city, Guri city, Hanam city to the east; Seongnam city, Gwacheon city, Anyang city to the south; Gwangmyeong city, Bucheon city, and Gimpo city to the west.
