GAMING GLOBAL a Report for British Council Nick Webber and Paul Long with Assistance from Oliver Williams and Jerome Turner
GAMING GLOBAL A report for British Council Nick Webber and Paul Long with assistance from Oliver Williams and Jerome Turner I Executive Summary The Gaming Global report explores the games environment in: five EU countries, • Finland • France • Germany • Poland • UK three non-EU countries, • Brazil • Russia • Republic of Korea and one non-European region. • East Asia It takes a culturally-focused approach, offers examples of innovative work, and makes the case for British Council’s engagement with the games sector, both as an entertainment and leisure sector, and as a culturally-productive contributor to the arts. What does the international landscape for gaming look like? In economic terms, the international video games market was worth approximately $75.5 billion in 2013, and will grow to almost $103 billion by 2017. In the UK video games are the most valuable purchased entertainment market, outstripping cinema, recorded music and DVDs. UK developers make a significant contribution in many formats and spaces, as do developers across the EU. Beyond the EU, there are established industries in a number of countries (notably Japan, Korea, Australia, New Zealand) who access international markets, with new entrants such as China and Brazil moving in that direction. Video games are almost always categorised as part of the creative economy, situating them within the scope of investment and promotion by a number of governments. Many countries draw on UK models of policy, although different countries take games either more or less seriously in terms of their cultural significance. The games industry tends to receive innovation funding, with money available through focused programmes. -

Casual Games and Gender
Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich Institute of Sociology Casual games and gender Ulrich Tausend Summer Term 2006 Advanced Seminar: Economic Sociology Lecturer: Professor Norman Braun M#: 3790357 [email protected] Ulrich Tausend: Casual Games and Gender Abstract This paper discusses the question: “Why do more women play casual games than men, if altogether more men play computer games than women?” Gender seems to have an impact upon the affinity towards different kinds of games and upon how much effort a person is willing to invest while playing a computer game. This is indicated by the different gender ratios of casual and hardcore gamers. Many potential gamers do not identify themselves with the stereotype of ‘real’ gamers, i.e., hardcore gamers, who are often seen as being young, male and lacking social skills. This could be one of the reasons why women and older people more frequently play the less ‘real’ or ‘typical’ casual games while often not seeing themselves as ‘computer gamers’. However, there are indications that the primary factor for the preference towards casual or hardcore games is, in fact, not gender. On the contrary, gender (as well as age) could cloud the more important variables, such as experience with computers or time allocation. For a better picture of the relationship between the different variables we would need more empirical data. Tool Support for Computer Role-Playing Game Programming
Abstract Computer role-playing games (CRPGs) are a genre of computer games, which aim at providing similar player experience than their ancestors, paper-and- pen role-playing games. For a type of digital games, their evolution is already rather long, as the first ones were created in 1980s. Typically CRPGs em- phasize character development and to support this huge fantasy worlds and sophisticated storylines are also present. CRPG development has unique challenges, which derive from these typical features. Content creation is a continuous issue, since huge virtual worlds and long storylines must be filled with content. Personalization is also an important issue, because all fun of creating personalized character is lost if it has no effect into the game. Low starting threshold is important for successful game. It is becoming essential that the player can start playing quickly and she is not required to spent time waiting the installation to be completed. This can be achieved by web-based approach, since web-based games do not require installations. There are also other benefits, such as instant distribution, platform inde- pendence, and instant upgrades. As it is likely that in the future CRPGs are web-based, software tools for developing browser-based games are even more important in the future. However regardless of the platform the unique challenges of CRPG development remain the same. This dissertation addresses these unique challenges and simplifies CRPG development with software tool support. The software tools presented in this dissertation begin with construction of a novel game engine called CAGE. We used this game engine in the game programming course of Department of Software Systems in Tampere University of Technology as a software plat- form, and students developed their games using it.
