Then, over the next 17 days, we travel hundreds of miles visiting some of the best known aviation museums and collections, great and small; plus, 3 of the world’s very best airshows, each unique and different. Our journey will take us to some historic towns and cities, with free time to explore them at your leisure. 2013 also brings to an end the flying career of the awesome Avro Vulcan bomber (pictured), as the graceful giant is permanently grounded. There are far too many fabulous aviation museums and aircraft collections in the UK to see in one visit, but this tour will take you to some of the largest and smallest, well known and not-so-well known. At those museums which have aircraft undergoing restoration, we will ask to be shown them during our visit. PROVISIONAL ITINERARY (all times local) DAY 1: FRIDAY, 5th JULY Arrive at London’s Heathrow Airport, where you will be met by your Ian Allan Tour Manager and transferred by private coach to the Oaklands Park Hotel in nearby Weybridge, a short 20-minutes drive away. The Oaklands Park is a superb 4-star hotel set in private grounds. This privately owned establishment is an historic country house and has been a hotel since 1856. It stands on the site of the grand Royal Palaces of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I. The great cedar tree at the front of the hotel was planted by Charles 1 to celebrate the birth of his son, Henry of Otelands. Website: www.oatlandsparkhotel.com/ Located 2 miles (7 minutes) by taxi is the Brooklands Museum: it was on this site that the world’s first purpose-built motor racing circuit was constructed in 1907, was the birthplace of British motorsport and aviation! The aircraft collection includes a Concorde and other famous British airliners and military aircraft. Website: www.brooklandsmusuem.com . You are free to visit the museum should your arrival in England allow: please note that travel from the hotel to/from the museum, and admission, is not included in the tour price. It was from this very room that the Battle of Britain was controlled. Preserved exactly as it was on the 15th September 1940 - Battle of Britain Day – you can sit in the same chair as Sir Winston Churchill as he followed the battle’s progress on this fateful day! Uxbridge was also the RAF station where Thomas Edward Lawrence served — Lawrence of Arabia! Then to Old Warden Aerodrome nestling in the Bedfordshire countryside, and home of the Shuttleworth Veteran Aeroplane Society and its unrivalled collection of very rare and classic aeroplanes from a bygone age. During the afternoon you have the opportunity to walk around this fascinating museum containing both historic aircraft and veteran automobiles, before the start of the very popular “Evening Flying Display” featuring aircraft from the 1920s through to the 1950s and up to the present! Also at this event, they fly their very early “Edwardian” aeroplanes (pictured left). There is an excellent on-site restaurant (for optional lunch/meals). Website: www.shuttleworth.org We stay the next 2 nights at the Comfort Hotel in the historic town of St Albans: a settlement of pre-Roman origin and named and after Saint Alban, the first British Christian martyr, who was beheaded in AD 308 on the orders of Emperor Diocletian. It was the first major town on the old Roman road of Watling Street for travellers heading north, and became the Roman city of Verulamium. DAY 3: SUNDAY, 7th JULY First visit is to Salisbury Hall in London Colney: home of the de Havilland Aircraft Heritage Centre incorporating the Mosquito Museum. Among the many fascinating aircraft on display is the world famous “jack of all trades – and master of them all!” — W4050, the D.H.98 Mosquito I prototype (pictured right) which was built here in total secrecy during World War 2. Website: www.dehavillandmuseum.co.uk At midday we drive a few miles to the east, to North Weald airfield. This famous Battle of Britain fighter station is still very active, and on most summer week-ends visitors may see some of the resident veteran and classic aircraft as they take-off and land. We start at “The Squadron”: housed in genuine WW2 buildings, the site includes a large Nissan hut housing the club room and bar, complete with 1940s furnishings. Food is freshly cooked in a “NAAFI” style restaurant; a menu will be handed to you after your arrival in the UK so that lunch can be pre-ordered, and each person will pay for his chosen meal on the day. Website: www.northwealdairfieldhistory.org/content/squadron Next up is the North Weald Airfield Museum located in the old Station Office. This sets out the history of this famous airfield which protected London during both world wars. The story is told in various displays, with photographs, artefacts and personal memories. Website: www.northwealdairfieldhistory.org/content/what-see DAY 4: MONDAY, 8th JULY Most of today is spent on Duxford airfield where you are free to visit the various museums: IWM Duxford, 8th US Air Force Museum, the Land Warfare Museum (tanks AFVs etc), Airborne Museum, the various civil airliners belonging to the Duxford Aviation Society, and warbird restoration hangars, etc. It will be a better day to look around, rather than when we attend the Flying Legends Airshow on the coming weekend, when up to 40,000 people fill the airfield. Mid-afternoon we arrive in Peterborough, staying overnight at the very comfortable Bull Hotel situated in the city centre, with its many restaurants, bars, clubs and shops in the neighbouring streets. Dating back to the 17th Century the Bull was a coaching inn on the Great North Road from London to York. Inside the city’s Cathedral is buried one of King Henry VIII’s wives, Katherine of Aragon; it is also the former resting place of Mary, Queen of Scots.
