  • Sheriffen Itennessee

Humanist Narratology and the Suburban Ensemble Dramedy Wyatt Moss-Wellington A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of: Doctor of Philosophy Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences University of Sydney 2017 DECLARATION OF ORIGINALITY This is to certify that to the best of my knowledge, the content of this thesis is my own work. This thesis has not been submitted for any degree or other purposes. I certify that the intellectual content of this thesis is the product of my own work and that all the assistance received in preparing this thesis and sources have been acknowledged. Wyatt Moss-Wellington 2 ABSTRACT What is a “humanistic drama”? Although we might describe narrative works as humanist, and references to the humanistic drama abound across a breadth of critical media, including film and literary theory, the parameters of these terms remain elliptical. My work attempts to clarify the narrative conditions of humanism. In particular, humanists ask how we use narrative texts to complicate our understanding of others, and question the ethics and efficacy of attempts to represent human social complexity in fiction. After historicising narrative humanism and situating it among related philosophies, I develop humanist hermeneutics as a method for reading fictive texts, and provide examples of such readings. I integrate literary Darwinism, anthropology, cognitive science and social psychology into a social narratology, which catalogues the social functions of narrative. This expansive study asks how we can unite the descriptive capabilities of social science with the more prescriptive ethical inquiry of traditional humanism, and aims to demonstrate their productive compatibility.

  • Television Studies: the TWILIGHT ZONE and the Expressive Culture of the 1950S/1960S”
1 V55.0751, Expressive Culture: Television “Television Studies: THE TWILIGHT ZONE and the expressive culture of the 1950s/1960s” Dana Polan phone: 998-1614 email: [email protected] office hours: Wednesdays, 9:30-12 (other times by appointment) Humanities Initiative 524, 20 Cooper Square (5th Floor) East 5th Street Description: According to cliché, the 1950s in America were a period of conformity and consensus, but it is clear that there were many signs of discontent with and within the image of cheerful homogeneity. For example, at the end of the decade, the television program The Twilight Zone, showed everyday life as a source of paranoia in which ordinary existence revealed its frightening underside. And as the nation engaged with the New Frontier of the Kennedy 1960s, the show used science fiction to represent dreams as American nightmares. This course studies expressive popular culture in 1950s and 1960s America with a focus on The Twilight Zone as a way of making the cultural and social concerns of the moment concrete and of testing available methods in the study of television. Most broadly, the course will attempt to examine the medium of popular television as an expressive cultural form which enlightened liberals like Serling tried to use as a mode of moral and aesthetic uplift. We will look at critical methods that might help us understand the potentials of television as expressive culture. The goal here will be both aesthetic – what is television as an expressive form and what are the methods of analysis appropriate to the medium? – and historical – what in the period under study either enabled or disabled television as a form of popular culture that could engage with the concerns of the day? Along the way, the course will examine the shift in American television from East Coast production of liberal drama to West Coast production of escapism and entertainment and will situate Rod Serling's career within that shift.
