• Center for Engaged Learning & Teaching Ethics & International Film
Center for Engaged Learning & Teaching Faculty Development/Cross-Divisional Teaching Materials Ethics & International Film across the Curriculum Julie Levinson, Virginia Newhall Rademacher - Arts & Humanities Film Title: A Separation Country: Iran Director: Asghar Farhadi Year: 2011 Principal Characters: Simin (Leila Hatami), Nader (Peyman Moaadi), Termeh (Sarina Farhadi), Hojjat (Shahab Hosseini), Razieh (Sareh Bayat), Nader’s father (Ali Asghar Shahbazi) Summary: A married couple is faced with a difficult decision – to improve the life of their child by moving to another country or to stay in Iran and look after a deteriorating parent who has Alzheimer's disease. As they interact with other Iranians and with state institutions, their personal situation becomes increasingly complicated and their marriage becomes strained to the breaking point. Beyond being compelling story about individual lives, A Separation is a rich and resonant contemplation of personal ethics and social power. Discussion Questions How do personal problems intersect with social institutions? How do civil law, religious law, and individual conscience collide in the film? How is social class presented in the film? What tensions are revealed between those of different classes and education levels? How is power vested in individuals and institutions? To what extent do these characters have power to decide their own fate? In what ways is their power to determine their lives limited by state power? How is the philosophical distinction between individual free will and social determinism conveyed? The film is full of delicate negotiations between individuals. Life seems to be a serial transaction. Cite some of the points of negotiation. How are these worked out (or not)? Is it possible to be fair to everyone in these negotiations? With whom do our dramatic sympathies lie? Does this shift during the film? This teaching note was prepared by Professor Julie Levinson and Assistant Professor Virginia Newhall Rademacher, both in the Arts and Humanities division at Babson College.

Karlovy Vary 2012 By Gönül Dönmez-Colin Fall 2012 Issue of KINEMA 47th KARLOVY VARY FILM FESTIVAL Over 200 films, including 34 shorts and 56 documentaries, with 23 world premieres and more than120,000 tickets sold. Karlovy Vary International Film Festival celebrated its 47th year with triumph this summer despite budget cuts that have also been menacing many other film festivals. The Grand Jury, headed by Richard Peña, programme director of New York Film Festival, and including Montreal’s well-known actor François Papineau, judged a dozen films over eight days (June 29 - July 7, 2012). In the Official Competition, Pele akher (The Last Step) by Ali Mosaffa from Iran, focused on a somewhat confused young wife-widow played by Leila Hatami, well-known for her role as an irritable housewife in Asghar Farhadi’s Oscar winner, A Separation. The Last Step however lacked the well-written script of A Separation and also suffered from Hatami’s being cast in a similar role as in her earlier film, Thefeature, a loose adaptation inspired by Tolstoy’s novella The Death of Ivan Ilyich (1886) and James Joyce’s story The Dead (1914) was more like a pastiche of several Iranian films that preceded it. French Canadian Rafaël Ouellet’s Camion about a truck-driver whose life changes drastically following a traffic accident that leaves an unknown woman dead captivated the audience with its remarkable cinematography and sound narrative that succeeded in avoiding melodrama despite its subject matter. Deine Schönheit ist nichts wert (Your Beauty is Worth Nothing) by Hüseyin Tabak, an Austrian entry whose ’filmic’ identity became controversial in Turkey after having won several awards, including the best Turkish film at Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival’s national competition, focused on a twelve-year oldboyfrom Turkey and his alienation as an immigrant in Vienna.

Negotiating a Position: Women Musicians and Dancers in Post-Revolution Iran Parmis Mozafari Submitted in accordance with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy The University of Leeds School of Music January 2011 The candidate confIrms that the work submitted is her own and that appropriate credit has been given where reference has been made to the work of others. This copy has been supplied on the understanding that it is copyright material and that no quotation from the thesis may be published without proper acknowledgement. 2011 The University of Leeds Parmis Mozafari Acknowledgment I would like to express my gratitude to ORSAS scholarship committee and the University of Leeds Tetly and Lupton funding committee for offering the financial support that enabled me to do this research. I would also like to thank my supervisors Professor Kevin Dawe and Dr Sita Popat for their constructive suggestions and patience. Abstract This research examines the changes in conditions of music and dance after the 1979 revolution in Iran. My focus is the restrictions imposed on women instrumentalists, dancers and singers and the ways that have confronted them. I study the social, religious, and political factors that cause restrictive attitudes towards female performers. I pay particular attention to changes in some specific musical genres and the attitudes of the government officials towards them in pre and post-revolution Iran. I have tried to demonstrate the emotional and professional effects of post-revolution boundaries on female musicians and dancers. Chapter one of this thesis is a historical overview of the position of female performers in pre-modern and contemporary Iran.

France-Iran: dans le sillage du "désintérêt" politique à une fascination culturelle mutuelle DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for The Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Jaleh Sharif, MA Graduate Program in French and Italian The Ohio State University 2015 Dissertation Committee: Professor Jennifer Willging, Adviser Professor Danielle Marx-Scouras Professor Richard Davis 1 Copyright by Jaleh Sharif 2015 2 Abstract This dissertation studies the history of Francophonie in Iran since the first fructuous official interactions between France and Persia in 17th century. Francophonie, i.e., the use of the French language and culture outside of France, has followed a winding path throughout several centuries in Persia (Iran). It grew from the interest of the Persian elite in a French society that neither engaged Persia militarily, nor attempted to compete with other European powers doing so. France's apparent lack of political interest in Persia became an official French diplomatic policy of "désintéressement," or "disinterest." This "hands off" policy nourished a Persian/Iranian fascination with French culture during the 19th and 20th centuries, as France was seen as a potential ally against the growing menace of Russia and Great Britain. As a result, and despite the growing political influence of other Western powers in Persia/Iran, the French language enjoyed the privileged status of first foreign Western language in Persia/Iran for almost a century, before being replaced by the English language due to the entry of the United States onto the international stage after the Second World War.
