WHERE CAN I HUNT DURING THE ROAR???
Yep it’s that time again , the roar is nearly here and hunters will be vying for access to good hunting spots up the valley.
Remember this is no different to any other time of the year in that hunters must apply for the appropriate permits to hunt DOC areas. Hunters wanting to hunt on private land must ask the landowner for permission – it’s just common courtesy and will enable the landowner to make sure everyone is safe on his land if they allow access.
If you are unsure who to contact regarding access contact either Kurow Information Centre or Kurow Police and they will endeavour to find out. There is an excellent website which provides public access details . Walking Access Mapping System (WAMS) is an online mapping system used to identify land in new Zealand open to recreational access on foot and to provide other access related information. There is a mobile application too so you can check access while you are hunting.
Finally remember it is no fun for a farmer and the family to have a torch shine in the window at night – naturally they are anxious a shot will follow.
And over to the Suck Eggs desk…… The 7 rules for firearms safety
*Treat every firearm as loaded *Always point firearm in a safe direction *Load a firearm only when ready to fire *Identify your target beyond all doubt *Check your firing zone *Store firearms and ammunition safely *Avoid alcohol or drugs when handling firearms
Happy safe hunting

A group of friends went deer hun ng and paired off in twos for the day. That night, one of the hunters returned alone, staggering under the weight of an eight- point buck. "Where's Henry?" "Henry had a nasty fall and broke both of his legs. He's a couple of miles back up the trail." "You le Henry laying out there and carried the deer back!?!" "A tough call," nodded the hunter, "but I figured no one is going to steal Henry!"

Two married men are in a pub discussing their love life when one says, "Have you ever tried playing doctor?" His buddy says, "No. What's it like?" The man replies, "It's amazing. Me and my wife were playing for about 10 hours." His buddy, shocked says, "10 hours!? How the hell did you manage that long?" "I just left her in the waiting room for 9 and a half hours." KUROW WALKS

When I heard that I had been successful in my applica on to take part in the Kākāpō Recovery Program on Whenua Hou, (Codfish Island), I was blown away, such an opportunity to go and see these awesome birds first hand! The double whammy was that my wife Judy was part of the early pest eradica on program that took place in the 1980’s. So I was armed with plenty of stories and mental pictures that were a “must see” when on the island, including skeletons being found in the bush, shots being fired at the toilet when someone was in a endance and massive cats being trapped. But firstly there was the quaran ne requirements which were understandably strict. No room for seeds or any unwanted bird diseases, OK, no problem. Bronnie from the Department of Conserva on sent me some disinfectant that is used to treat any suspected clothing or equipment, should be all go now, surely? Nope, while going through the quaran ne inspec on, Ranger Rory s ll managed to find one lonely li le seed in the sleeve Velcro of my rain coat, well done Rory, I thought I had checked everything! Once all the “Vollies” had meet each other over a cuppa, it was then off to the airport to meet up with the plane, s ll under quaran ne condi ons. Once we were all packed it was off for the 20 minute flight to the island where the landing was short and swi onto the beach.
We were met by the local crew and the out-going “Vollies” that couldn’t recommend the place enough, star ng to really look forward to this place. Once in the hut and the second part of the quaran ne process was out of the way, we went about the site induc on and safety briefing, very similar to the site induc ons held for Meridian’s sites, very focused on safety which was good to see. Time to enjoy a full tea and then kit up for a “night walk” onto the tops to introduce us to some “boys” that were being quite vocal about their territories. Con nued next issue The Otekaieke Hall commi ee would like to thank everyone who came and supported the Otekaieke Reel Hobby Horse Derby this year. This is the second year it has been run and it seems to get be er with age. A big Thank you goes to Jae Wilson (our MC) we couldn’t do this night without you and your humour! Thanks to our very generous horse owners, jockeys and those who purchased ckets and bets on the night, Puna Kerr Shearing for the courtesy vehicle, Michael Smith and the team at Farmlands Kurow for the Relish, Cake and fi ngs, Andrew and Megan Black for rec fying the water issues and Waitaki Spraying for the use of your chiller and parts for the water system, Mischa Clouston for capturing fantas c photos and a special thanks to the team who helped get the hall ready, food prepped, beer chilled and Linda and Moose for running the Tote. Congratula ons to Tom Edmondston for taking out derby winner, two years in a row. A payment of over $700 coming your way Tom! All proceeds from the race derby goes into repairs, maintenance and costs of our wonderful Otekaieke Soldiers’ Memorial Hall. Again Thank you everyone and we look forward to doing it all again soon.
Jody Macdonald and the Otekaieke Hall Commi ee team photos of the evening can be viewed on our Facebook page h ps://www.facebook.com/otekaiekehall
From hot sunny 30 degrees to cold rain and 9 degrees last week is not fun if you are a grape grower trying to ripen your grapes and keep botrytis away. We are getting closer now to harvest and our Pinot noir (usually the first grape we pick) is sitting on 20 brix. (Brix is a measurement of the sugar content in grapes. We ideally want to harvest between 22 and 24 brix. We send samples of our grapes away weekly now to our winemakers laboratory to be tested for not only brix levels but also acids and ph levels.
We looking at a harvest starting maybe anytime from April 10th?
Once again Waitaki Valley Preschool will be using our harvest as a fundraiser for them. Any one that wants to volunteer their time to help the Preschool parents pick grapes at River -T Estate please contact Ro wan McCone ph.(03) 4360999 or email [email protected]
Our vineyard is flat and harvest day is a fun activity to be part of.

Even if you are close to someone, it can some mes be hard to tell how much emo onal pain they are in and whether they need help; and it can be equally as hard recognising in it yourself. O en, it’s something small that can make you think something isn’t quite right – and more o en that not, that hunch will be right. You might see it in yourself or in someone else, or someone could see it in you.
You might want to get extra support if they or you:
• Don't want to see their friends or no longer enjoy spending me with their friends and family • Stop doing things they used to love or don't seem to be enjoying themselves • Can't remember things, concentrate, or pay a en on • Feel bad about themselves – guilty, worthless or ashamed • Have a big change in ea ng pa erns or appe te • Have extreme mood swings • Feel hopeless or really sad, or cry a lot • Feel anxious, stressed, nervous or scared a lot and can't seem to relax • Are not happy unless they're using drugs or alcohol • Don't take care of their appearance or personal hygiene • Have physical signs of injury or that they are hur ng themselves • Have panic a acks – rapid heartbeat, unable to breathe, feeling dizzy and extremely scared or anxious all at once.
