  • A View of the History of the Istanbul Faculty of Medicine
A VIEW OF THE HISTORY OF THE ISTANBUL FACULTY OF MEDICINE Prof. Dr. Nuran Yıldırım The Istanbul Faculty of Medicine, the Department of History of Medicine and Ethics Attributing the roots of the Istanbul Faculty of Medicine to the Fatih Darüşşifa after a great deal of discussion, the 500th anniversary of medical education in Istanbul was celebrated in 1970. The soundest documents showing that medical education was carried out in the Fatih Dârüşşifa were the appointment papers (rüus) of medical students for the dârüşşifa in the 60 years between 1723 and 1783. These nine rüus, which were recently published, clarify that there were positions for six medical students in the dârüşşifa, and that whenever a vacancy came up, a new medical student would be appointed by the chief physician to undergo a systematic medical training. 1-Archival document concerning Ismail Efendi‟s appointment in place of Derviş Mehmet in Fatih Darüşşifa after his death. With the opening of the Süleymaniye Medical Medrese, medical education in Istanbul, which had started with the Fatih Dârüşşifa, became institutionalized. The opening of a medical medrese for the first time in the Ottoman State is accepted as being an important step in our history of medical education. The Süleymaniye Medical Medrese (Süleymaniye Tıp Medresesi) was a medrese for specializing, or a “post-graduate” course, as only students who had completed their classic medrese education could continue. Not only did the physicians that were trained join the scholarly classes, but at the same time they could be qadi or rising even to the level of sheikh-ul-Islam or grand vizier.

global history of the present Series editor | Nicholas Guyatt In the Global History of the Present series, historians address the upheavals in world history since 1989, as we have lurched from the Cold War to the War on Terror. Each book considers the unique story of an individual country or region, refuting grandiose claims of ‘the end of history’, and linking local narratives to international developments. Lively and accessible, these books are ideal introductions to the contemporary politics and history of a diverse range of countries. By bringing a historical perspective to recent debates and events, from democracy and terrorism to nationalism and globalization, the series challenges assumptions about the past and the present. The general objectives of GEO IP is: 1) to found the Galata Electroacoustic Orchestra, a small group orchestra based on an idea of live collective composition; 2) to merge of the Western Classical tradition of score- based music and the Improvisational techniques, in particular of Turkish Maqam Music. As the dialogue between the three Countries (Turkey, Spain and Italy) involved in the IP is an important objective for GEO, we adopted the sealing map ( portolano ) as a guide metaphor for the project (when a ship docks, the goods – in our case: the musical products – from one country are unloaded and goods from another country are loaded). The expected learning outcomes are related to the acquisition of skills and abilities in the following disciplinary areas: theoretic, ethnomusicological, technological, performing and compositional. The expected outputs of the GEO IP project are: - a concert by the Galata Electroacustic Orchestra at the end of the IP; - a permanent

  • Advancement of the Modern State Through Education: Bulgarians at Robert College 1863-1912
Advancement of the Modern State through Education: Bulgarians at Robert College 1863-1912 Paulin Draganova June 2, 2018 Draganova 2 INTRODUCTION In the struggle of Bulgaria preceding the independence and after, the education Bulgarian students received at Robert College influenced the future direction of Bulgaria as a nation-state. The opportunity that Robert College provided was unique and appealing to Bulgarian students because of the location of the college and the quality of its education. Konstantin Stoilov, Stefan Panaretov, Todor Ivanchov, and Ivan Bagarov exemplify the types of men that graduated Robert College and actively had the opportunity to impact Bulgaria through their careers. Robert College’s qualities as a college that was American and taught curriculum that was American provided the ideas of modernity to their students. Through the use of ethnic identity to group students and the promotion of Bulgarian, the vernacular language for Bulgarian students in an academic and recognized setting, Robert College fostered nationalism that strengthened Bulgaria’s political and social environment to establish an independent democratic, market- oriented, modern nation-state. ROBERT COLLEGE’S IMPACT ON BULGARIA CAME FROM SO MANY BULGARIANS ATTENDING THE COLLEGE When Robert College was founded in 1863, Bulgaria was still part of the Ottoman Empire. Bulgarian students attended it before Bulgaria had gained independence from the Ottoman Empire and in the following years when the Third Bulgarian State was established. Robert College opened in Constantinople at a time when there was no quality education being offered to the Bulgarian subjects of the Ottoman Empire. Robert College provided an education that was located close to the Bulgarian provinces, and the education was at a high level, on par with American colleges at the time.
