The theme of this Symposium is the question of ‘Responsible Tourism?’, focussing on whether or not tourism can be conceptualised as a responsible activity. This Nordic Symposium is pleased to announce that there will be 143 paper presentations in 31 sessions, demonstrating the vibrancy and professionalism of Nordic academic Tourism Studies. The sessions were created by the NORTHORS community, representing and reflecting topical issues of responsibility in a Nordic context. It is clear to us that the debate on ‘Responsible Tourism’ is a lively one which should be celebrated and applauded. At this Symposium we will strive to make your visit as ‘responsible’ as we can, reflecting the wonderful example set by our colleagues in Copenhagen last year, who had the ambition and foresight to create the first responsible symposium in the history of NORTHORS. Symposium materials have therefore been kept to a minimum. Admittedly, we are not completely paperless but we do provide you with a Nordic ecolabel certified Symposium Programme. The pens from the Icelandic Tourism Board are made of maize and are a reminder of Vakinn, the official quality and environmental system within Icelandic tourism. Additionally we ask you once the Symposium is over to place the plastic badge holders and lanyards in the boxes provided at the Reception desk or return them to a member of the Symposium Team when you leave the venue for the last time. These can then be reused. The Radisson BLU Saga Hotel is an eco-labelled hotel, certified by the Green Key. The hotel

In this research study six interviews were taken by the researcher as a part of the survey activities.

It argues that both the term and the concept of national park evolved in a long-lasting deliberative pro- cess between competing definitions. The main actors in this process were geographers, forestry scientists and NGOs devoted to popular edu- cation and the promotion of tourism. As a result of the debates, iconic landscapes and species were located in Finnish nature inside the wholly artificial boundaries of the national parks. Eventually, both the science and tourism poles of the decades-long debate were incorporated into the plans and visions for Finland’s national parks in the early twentieth century. The national park debate between the 1880s and 1910s focused mainly on landscapes, land formations and vegetation zones, and not so much on the wildlife or indeed the people who lived inside these areas. Social implications – The conditions under which sustainability could become a consideration for tourism development in Ylläs are linked to sustaining tourism business, the most important source of income for Ylläs.

Nature-based tourism in a Nordic context Peter Fredman, Jan Vidar Haukeland, Liisa Tyrväinen, Stian Stensland and Sandra Wall-Reinius INTRODUCTION In a global perspective, the Nordic region is one of the prominent destinations among tourists looking for nature-based activities and experiences. The Nordic countries are typically seen as a single tourism region characterized and inspired by common ideas and values like openness, trust and sustainability. Geopolitically, they are a geographical and cultural region in Northern Europe and the North Atlantic which consists of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden, and the three autonomous regions: the Åland Islands, the Faroe Islands and Greenland (Nordic Council of Ministers, 2019a). The Nordic countries have much in common in their way of life, history, language and social structure, but the geophysical conditions show great variability. Despite the northern location, climate is milder than many other places at the same latitude due to the Atlantic Gulfstream. This also implies four distinct seasons with different temperature, light and weather conditions. In this chapter, we describe the Nordic region as a tourist destination primarily illustrated with examples from Norway, Sweden and Finland. The east–west and north–south gradients of these countries capture many of the special features of nature-based tourism in the Nordic region. In the context of tourism, it makes sense to speak in terms of a destination rather than a region, being a key concept of institutionalized tourism. However, regardless if one takes an economic geography, marketing management, customer, or cultural oriented approach (Saraniemi and Kylänen, 2011), we believe the Nordic region has much in common also as a tourist destination.

This is done using Finnish case studies: describing and analyzing perceptions and opinions of tourism professionals, experts, entrepreneurs and regional developers of the Finnish laboratory areas, namely Jyväskylä, Vaasa and Vuokatti/Kainuu regions, in order to identify the competitive advantages of Finland as a wellbeing tourism destination. The model of a sustainable wellness destination by Sheldon and Park (2009) is applied as a framework for this study. Following this framework supporting factors and resources of wellness tourism, core wellness resources and attractions, wellness destination policy and planning, and wellness destination development and management are examined in the Finnish context complemented by the case studies. For instance, the following issues are discussed: 1) the unique selling points and value creating attributes of the areas, 2) networking and destination management in the areas, 3) information acquisition, 4) innovation driving forces, and 5) ideas and visions for the Nordic Wellbeing concept.

It has an exceptionally high biodiversity compared to other areas in Finland. The area is a combination of herb rich forests, lush groves, meadows and cliffs with large areas of open sea, brackish water and bare outer islets. The influence of human activity can be seen in the number of plants which depend on man and grazing to survive. Finnish national parks are established under their own separate laws and can consist only of state-owned land and water.
