I contribute to existing scholarship on Negro spirituals by tracing the performances of these songs by the original Fisk Jubilee singers in 1867 to the Hall Johnson Choir’s performances in the 1920s-1930s, with a specific focus on the portrayal of Negro folk culture.

  • Jordan Casteel in Conversation with Massimiliano Gioni
16 MANY ARE CALLED JORDAN CASTEEL IN CONVERSATION 17 WITH MASSIMILIANO GIONI Massimiliano Gioni When did you decide that you were going to be an artist? Jordan Casteel I think I can say that I have been making things my entire life. I was always getting my hands involved in something, whether it was baking or making gifts for friends and family. My parents were real advocates for the arts and collected on a small scale. They had prints of Romare Bearden and Faith Ringgold in the house. So, I was aware of the work of many great African-American artists. I understood there was a legacy that I could be part of, and I was aware of my cre- ativity at a very young age. But I never knew any living artists. And I wouldn’t have any contact with artists until much later. MG Did your parents make art? JC My dad sort of did. He’d probably be mortified, but he used to do macramé. He has three sisters who are all creative in some capacity. He had a very hands- driven, making-involved family. My mom comes from a social justice and philan- thropy family. They supported me as a child who just wanted to make stuff. MG Are you an only child? JC I have two brothers, so I’m the only girl. My space, my craft corner, as I used to call it, was my reprieve. It was always where I felt the most safe and comfortable. But it wasn’t really until getting into Yale that I thought about being an artist.

  • Jordan Casteel Is Making You Look
Photographed by Tyler Mitchell Jordan Casteel Is Making You Look JULIA FELSENTHAL February 27, 2018 8:05 AM There’s a thing that happens when you look at certain paintings by the young portrait artist Jordan Casteel. You take note of her subject, usually a black man. You look again, closer this time, and only on second glance do you recognize that his skin tone doesn’t actually resemble skin at all, but is instead blue, or green, or pink, or orange, or chalky white. You may question why you didn’t notice at first. You may marvel at Casteel’s clever palette, her ability to rationalize figure against ground, to hide a person the color of, say, the Hulk, in plain sight. If you’re thinking the way she hopes you’re thinking, you may wonder why you were so quick to clock his race. Maybe you wonder what other judgments you jumped to in the process. “Which I love!” Casteel says when I describe it as a sort of magic-eye trick. “That was very intentional.” The artist, 29, is lanky and long-limbed, with a boyish haircut and the easy, funky style—’80s jeans, white Nikes, colorful socks, oversize glasses—of a very cool fifth grader. We’re sitting side by side on a sofa on the lower level of the Casey Kaplan gallery, where this fall Casteel mounted a much buzzed-about exhibition of paintings, “Nights in Harlem.” “I was interested in the fact that people were going, ‘Oh, you’re painting black men.’ And then they would be like: ‘Oh, actually, he’s green.’ I loved witnessing the externalization of that internal process.” She goes on: “I consider myself a painter in the most technical way.

  • The Otaku Lifestyle: Examining Soundtracks in the Anime Canon
THE OTAKU LIFESTYLE: EXAMINING SOUNDTRACKS IN THE ANIME CANON A THESIS IN Musicology Presented to the Faculty of the University of Missouri-Kansas City in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree MASTER OF MUSIC by MICHELLE JURKIEWICZ B.M., University of Central Missouri, 2014 Kansas City, Missouri 2019 © 2019 MICHELLE JURKIEWICZ ALL RIGHTS RESERVED THE OTAKU LIFESTYLE: EXAMINING SOUNDTRACKS IN THE ANIME CANON Michelle Jurkiewicz, Candidate for the Master of Music Degree University of Missouri-Kansas City, 2019 ABSTRACT Japanese animation, or anime, has been popular around the globe for the last sixty years. Anime has its own fan culture in the United States known as otaku, or the obsessive lifestyle surrounding manga and anime, which has resulted in American production companies creating their own “anime.” Japanese filmmakers do not regard anime simply as a cartoon, but instead realize it as genre of film, such as action or comedy. However, Japanese anime is not only dynamic and influential because of its storylines, characters, and themes, but also for its purposeful choices in music. Since the first anime Astro Boy and through films such as Akira, Japanese animation companies combine their history from the past century with modern or “westernized” music. Unlike cartoon films produced by Disney or Pixar, Japanese anime do not use music to mimic the actions on-screen; instead, music heightens and deepens the plot and emotions. This concept is practiced in live-action feature films, and although anime consists of hand-drawn and computer-generated cartoons, Japanese directors and animators create a “film” experience with their dramatic choice of music.

  • Typologies of Black Male Sensitivity in R&B and Hip
Typologies of Black Male Sensitivity in R&B and Hip Hop Cassandra Chaney and Krista D. Mincey Journal of Hip Hop Studies, Volume 1, Issue 1, Spring 2014, pp. 121 ‐ 156 JOURNAL OF HIP HOP STUDIES . Typologies of Black Male Sensitivity in R&B and Hip Hop Cassandra Chaney and Krista D. Mincey Abstract A qualitative content analysis was conducted on the lyrics of 79 R&B and Hip Hop songs from 1956-2013 to identify the ways that these Black male artists expressed sensitivity. The songs were determined by Billboard Chart Research Services, and Phenomenology provided the theoretical foundation on which the themes were identified. Qualitative analysis of the lyrics revealed Black male sensitivity in R&B and Hip Hop to be based on the following four typologies: (a) Private Sensitivity; (b) Partnered Sensitivity; (c) Perceptive Sensitivity; and (d) Public Sensitivity. Private Sensitivity occurred when the Black male is alone; feels lonely; disguises or hides his tears from his romantic partner or others; and expresses a determination to not cry and/or continue crying. Partnered Sensitivity occurred when the Black male encourages and/or connects with his romantic partner, other men, and/or members of the Black community through crying. Perceptive Sensitivity was demonstrated when Black men acknowledge the tears shed by others, and shed tears themselves while being conscious of society’s expectation that men suppress emotion and/or refrain from crying. Public Sensitivity was exemplified when the Black male cries publicly and verbally expresses that he does not care what others think of him. Qualitative examples are provided to support each of the aforementioned themes.
