ART 2311: Art and Architecture in Rome Fall 2016 A Days (Mondays and Wednesdays), 11:30am-1:00pm Aula Magna (plus site visits on some Wednesday afternoons) COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course gives students the unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the development of the city of Rome through a study of its art, architecture and urban transformation. It focuses on the major artistic and architectural movements occurring primarily in Italy (as well as their Greek antecedents) from roughly the 8th century BCE to the 20th century CE. In the study of each period we will strive to understand Rome’s artistic and architectural works within the contexts in which they were created. Our study of art, architecture and urban planning will therefore take into account the historical, political, social, religious and cultural contexts of the patrons, artists and viewers. Particular emphasis will be placed on ancient Greece and Rome, early Christianity, the Renaissance and the Baroque periods. We will also explore the reuse, borrowing and revival of ancient artistic and architectural themes in later periods. There will be the opportunity for students from the different universities to exchange, collaborate and share their insights on the project through workshop and review. The project is part of the activities activated by the Bilateral Teaching Exchange 2016‐2017 between CUHK and TUD aiming to develop a cultural bridge between East and West where students exchange information and ideas and during a series of shared workshop‐meetings. Students will experience the impact of working in a different physical and cultural context and learn from each other’s methodologies. Students signed up for the studio must travel to Rome for the workshop/ review. School of architecture will provide minimal subsidies for this travel at approximately 3,000 HKD per student. Students will be responsible for the remaining costs. Abstract Rare and precious window elements from the Paleochristian Basilica of Saint Sabina in Rome, made of plaster gypsum with translucent selenite used as glass for light transmission, were discovered by Antonio Muñoz during the restoration of the building at the beginning of the 20th c. Originally standing within the stone window frame, were then mounted on wood planks with screws for holding together the scattered fragments. The surfaces were covered with grime and the selenite elements were blinded by the wooden supports. During the recent conservation treatment at ISCR, traces of Egyptian blue on the internal surfaces were detected. -

Cammy Brothers Reconstruction as Design: Giuliano da Sangallo and the “palazo di mecenate” on the Quirinal Hill this paper I will survey information regarding both the condition and conception of the mon- ument in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. When Giuliano saw the temple, the only fragments left standing were a portion of the façade and parts of the massive stair structure. His seven drawings of the monument were the first attempts to reconstruct the entire building, as well as the most complex and large scale reconstructions that he ever executed. The sec- ond part of this essay will compare Giuliano’s drawings with those of Peruzzi and Palladio, with the aim of demonstrating, contrary to the theory that drawings after the antique became increasingly accurate over time, that Giuliano in fact took fewer liberties in his reconstruction than did Palladio. Aside from providing some insight into Giuliano’s working method, I hope through this comparison to suggest that fif- teenth- and sixteenth-century drawings of antiquities cannot appropriately be judged according to one standard, because each archi- 1. Patrizio Pensabene Architectural Spolia and Urban Transformation in Rome from the Fourth to the Thirteenth Century Summary This paper is a historical outline of the practice of reuse in Rome between the th and th century AD. It comments on the relevance of the Arch of Constantine and the Basil- ica Lateranensis in creating a tradition of meanings and ways of the reuse. Moreover, the paper focuses on the government’s attitude towards the preservation of ancient edifices in the monumental center of Rome in the first half of the th century AD, although it has been established that the reuse of public edifices only became a normal practice starting in th century Rome. Between the th and th century the city was transformed into set- tlements connected to the principal groups of ruins. Then, with the Carolingian Age, the city achieved a new unity and several new, large-scale churches were created. These con- struction projects required systematic spoliation of existing marble. The city enlarged even more rapidly in the Romanesque period with the construction of a large basilica for which marble had to be sought in the periphery of the ancient city. At that time there existed a highly developed organization for spoliating and reworking ancient marble: the Cos- matesque Workshop.
