EdOdyssey creates one-of-a-kind, fully customized immersion trips for schools. This program has been designed for Atlanta International School students studying Latin in grades 6-8 to complement their study of Latin, Roman history, mythology, art, and culture. During the trip, students will gain valuable insight into the history and rich cultural heritage of the amazing city of Rome, Vatican City, and Pompeii.

This trip, open to all 6th-8th graders, will expose students to many aspects of Rome’s including history, cuisine, art, and culture. Upon return, students will have a rich understanding of life in Rome, as it was in ancient times to present day. All visits are tailored to be fun and education for middle school students!

DAY 2 - ARRIVE IN ROME! - FE BRUARY 27, 2020 (THURSDAY) Afternoon: Welcome to Rome! Your plane lands at 12:45pm local time. The group will be welcomed by EdOdyssey’s local educator at Leonardo Da Vinci (Fiumicino) airport and a bus will bring the group to the convent where we will be staying.

the neighborhood, go to the local grocery store to pick up snacks and even walk through a beautiful local park and get out first glimpse at the Colosseum.

Evening: Pizza Party! Get settled into your home for the next week and share airplane stories with new friends! After a long first day of travel we will enjoy a fun and relaxed pizza dinner with authentic Roman pizza in the cozy dining space at the convent where we are staying. Eat some yummy pizza and get excited for a full day exploring Rome tomorrow!

DAY 3 - COLOSSEUM & AN CIENT ROME - FE BRUARY 28, 2020 (FRIDAY) Morning： Breakfast at bed and breakfast in Rome

Visit & Tour of the Colosseum and Roman Forum Rome’s greatest gladiatorial arena was inaugurated in 80 AD and at its peak hosted 50,000 spectators who came to watch gladiators duke it out with each other or with wild animals. After the Colosseum we will head to the Roman Forum, or downtown Ancient Rome: once a chaotic district of temples, basilicas, markets, and public spaces. It dates back to the 6th century BC.

Lunch Massenzio ai Fori To prepare for our afternoon as Gladiators we will eat a yummy meal of fresh salads, focaccia bread and bruschette miste. Yum!

Afternoon: Circo Massimo & Gladiator School! This afternoon you’ll explore the Circus Maximus, which was once ancient Rome’s largest chariot racetrack. After seeing Rome’s two most important ancient stadiums, it’s time for us to learn how to be Gladiators! We’ll head to gladiator school together where we will learn the basics of ancient Rome’s most famous athletes.

Dinner: Family style delicious Roman meal!

DAY 4 - OS TIA AN TICA & TESTACCIO NE IGHBORHOOD - FEBRUARY 29, 2020 (SA TURDAY) Morning： Breakfast at convent in Rome

Ostia Antica Ostia Antica is one of Rome’s best kept secrets. Located 30 minute away by train from the city center of Rome, this well-preserved ancient town allows us an insider look at daily life in a bustling trade city at the height of the Roman Empire. Exploring these phenomenal ruins gives us an opportunity to truly understand the ways the Ancient Romans lived and see first hand the bread shops, temples, and even public bathrooms that made life in Ancient Rome so impressive.

Lunch: Picnic Lunch! We will enjoy a lovely picnic just outside the ruins before we head back into Rome to continue our exploration of ancient meets modern Rome.

Afternoon: Visit to the Testaccio Neighborhood Testaccio may not be Rome’s prettiest neighborhood, but its rich history more than makes up for it. Here we find Rome’s famous Pyramid, ruins from the former imperial port nestled in with the daily life of modern day Roman’s. In antiquity, the district was home to the Emporium port, where the bulk of the Romans’ food supply funneled into the city. Olive oil, grains, and other essential foodstuffs arrived in terracotta vessels called amphorae, and once emptied were disposed of in an outdoor dumpsite. The ancient Monte dei Cocci, or Monte Testaccio hill, composed of millions of broken amphorae, still looms today.

Dinner: Cooking Class Tonight we will prepare our own delicious three-course meal with a local chef. The menu will include an incredible sampling of the most famous dishes that Roman’s have been proud of for generations. We will bring the delight of preparing them home with us, with an emailed copy of all the yummy recipes we prepare. Buon appetito!

DAY 5 - HIGHLIGHTS O F RO ME & CITY CE NTER - MA RCH 1, 2020 (SUNDAY) *IMPORTANT: In Rome strict dress codes are enforced for church. All must dress “in a manner appropriate to a sacred place.” Shoulders of both men and women must be covered as well as knees. Men must wear pants. Women should wear pants or skirts/dresses that fall below their knees.

Introduction to the historic center Rome’s historic center is rich in bustling piazzas, cobblestone alleyways, Renaissance palazzos and Baroque architecture. It’s also home to some of the capital’s biggest attractions, including the Spanish Steps and the Pantheon. Tangles of boutiques, bars, restaurants, and shops also call the c entro storico home.

Your walk will start at Porta del Popolo, once one of the ports of ancient Rome. Inside you’ll find Piazza del Popolo, home to the Egyptian obelisk of Sety I, the tallest and oldest and second tallest obelisk in Rome. It was brought to Rome in 10BC by Augustus. Next, you’ll see the Spanish Steps, a 135 step staircase completed in 1725. At its base is the early Baroque Fontana della Barcaccia, designed by Bernini. Then we’ll visit arguably the most famous fountain in the world, the Trevi Fountain. Tradition requires that visitors toss a coin into its famed waters to ensure a return to the Eternal City. Fun fact: The fountain collects an average of 3,000 euro a day (Via dei Maroniti, 29). You’ll visit the Pantheon, a 2,000 year old former Roman temple that is now a church. It’s the final resting place of painter Raphael and is the world’s largest unreinforced dome.

Continue on to Piazza Navona, whose grand centerpieces include Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi, featuring an Egyptian obelisk.

Lunch: Sacro e Profano- a deconsecrated church turned restaurant

Afternoon: St. Peter’s Basilica + Vatican City

This magnificent Basilica is also the world’s largest Catholic Church. In St. Peter’s Square we will get an opportunity to admire an ancient Egyptian obelisk, the stunning exterior architecture and Bernini’s colonnade around the outside. We will head inside to admire the amazing artwork, see Michelangelo’s Pieta and even see the tombs of some former Popes.

Evening: Dinner at Da Michele Enjoy a delicious mix of pasta, fresh delicious side vegetables and homemade desserts at this local neighborhood favorite.

DAY 6 - “MICHELANGELO FOR A DAY” - MARCH 2, 2020 (MO NDAY) Morning： Breakfast at convent in Rome

"Michelangelo for a Day" Art Workshop On our final full day in Rome we become the artists! To complement our look at Italy's incredible art and artists, we have a full day experience planned that includes a new walking exploration of Rome’s most iconic sites and a hands-on watercolor workshop where each student will create their own masterpiece! This perfect souvenir is a wonderful way to capture and take home all the amazing memories that the students have created during their amazing week in Rome. Our day will include: -A half-day workshop with an artist who will teach us all how to paint in watercolor -Each student gets to keep his or her artwork

Lunch: Picnic in Villa Borghese (w eather permitting) Explore the beautiful green gardens in Rome’s famous public park; Villa Borghese. We will have a group picnic and enjoy classic Roman p anini (sandwiches)

Afternoon: “Michelangelo for a Day” (continued)

City Center + Free time for shopping Yesterday we had the opportunity to explore Rome’s most iconic sites. Today we continue our exploration at a more leisurely pace. We will enjoy peeking into artisan shops, exploring La Rinascente, Italy’s iconic department store with a special Ancient Roman surprise in the basement and a tasty authentic Roman gelato.

Dinner: Da Nino - V ia Merulana This family-owned restaurant serves up all the classics. Enjoy ravioli, cacio e pepe and a delightful sample of their homemade desserts too.

DAY 7 - SO UTHERN EXCURSION: PO MPEII & HERCULANEUM - MARCH 3, 2020 (TUESDAY) Morning： Early breakfast at convent in Rome

Located about 150 miles south of Rome, our day excursion to Pompeii, the famous Roman city that was buried under volcanic ash and pumice in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79!

Archeological tour of Pompeii with local guide Along with your EdOdyssey Educator, students will explore the ancient ruins of P ompeii who have adapted a special visit adapted for middle school students to be fun and educational. In Pompeii, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, students a unique snapshot into Roman everyday life as the city was "frozen in time" and well preserved due to the volcanic ash.

Lunch: Pizza lunch The south of Italy is known as the home of pizza and today we will get to enjoy our own personal pizza made Neapolitan style complete with thick delicious crust and the freshest local cheese and tomato sauce.

Afternoon: Herculaneum This resort town from Ancient Rome is brimming with amazing archaeological finds, our walking tour of Herculaneum takes in all the highlights, including the Forum, the Thermal Baths, the House of the Mosaic Atrium and the Decumanus.

Evening: Travel South to Paestum & check-in to hotel Hotel || Hotel Rosy V ia Lido Lago, 5, 84091 Battipaglia SA

Traditional local dinner Enjoy a family style meal with all the Southern Italian specialties, one thing Paestum is world famous for is the exceptional buffalo mozzarella that they produce locally, yum!

DAY 8- PAESTUM & AN CIENT GREECE - MARCH 4, 2020 (WEDNESDAY) Morning： Breakfast at hotel

Paestum + Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Paestum During our day in Paestum, the group will explore some of the best preserved Greek temples constructed between 600 and 450 BC. Students will see the First Temple of Hera, Second Temple of Hera, and Temple of Athena while learning about the Greek, Lucanian and Roman occupation of the area.

Lunch: Special final meal! As a special final group meal to celebrate our time in Italy your program coordinator has a couple local restaurants in mind pending the group’s favorite foods!

Afternoon: Drive back to Rome!

We will arrive at our convenient airport hotel, check-in and have a big group dinner before getting ready for a night’s sleep to prepare for tomorrow’s early travel morning. We will enjoy a group reflection during dinner where we can share our favorite moments and delight in the memories we have all made together over this fun and exciting Italian extravaganza!

DAY 9 - TR AVEL DAY - MARCH 5, 2020 (TH URSDAY) Morning: Early breakfast at the airport hotel, meet in the lobby, say good-bye to new friends and travel to the airport!
