Palaeoindian Occupation of the Atacama Desert, Northern Chile

The new site at Salar Punta Negra (24 280S/60 530W/ 2976 m) includes about 1000 classifiable, mostly unifacial artefacts and, uniquely, three different diagnostic types of early projectile points. Two of the Lateglacial/early Holocene projectile types have wide distribution and are known from different geographical areas in South America: the Palaeoindian ‘Fell’ fish-tail point mainly from the southern cone of South America, and the triangular ‘Tuina’ points typical of the Puna of the south-central Andes in northern Chile and northwestern Argentina. In addition, we found a third type, a stemmed point typical for the Salar Punta Negra. Fill- ing a large geographical gap of ‘Fell’ occupation, the site at Salar Punta Negra provides evidence for generally much higher mobility and diversity of early cultures, and supports an Andean-Pacific route for early human exploration of South America to the south through the desert at intermediate alti- tudes. Contemporaneous high-amplitude climatic changes were fundamental preconditions to pro- vide adequate environments and habitats, and to make Palaeoindian hunting-gathering occupation possible in the Atacama Desert. -

RESUMEN Se describen y analizan los primeros cincuenta años de incorporación del área interior de Antofagasta a la administración y la economía chilena. Se establecen las estrategias de dominio implementadas sobre ese territorio y sus recursos, en concordancia con las directrices del modelo político y económico vigente, basado en una particular relación entre el estado, la iniciativa privada y el capital extranjero. En relación con ello, se analizan las dinámicas y reestructuraciones socioeconómicas experimentadas por los sectores sociales en el área y, particularmente, por la población indígena local. Palabras Claves: Estado Chileno - Provincia de Antofagasta - Economías Extractivas - Área Andina Interior - Minoría Indígena Regional. ABSTRACT Here we describe and analyze the first fifty years of the incorporation of the interior area of Antofagasta to the Chilean administration and economy. We discuss how domain strategies are implemented on this territory and its resources, based on its peculiar relationship with the government, private initiative and foreign capital. Related to it, we analyze the socioeconomic dynamics and restructuration experimented by the social sectors in the area and, more specifically, by the local indigenous population. A 121 m deep well drilled in the central salar disclosed a complex evaporitic sequence of 12 salt crusts separated by 11 mud layers. In the lower half of the profile, thick halite beds alternate with thin mud layers. The mud layers thicken upwards and show clear lacustrine features. The thickness of the salt beds decreases markedly from the base upward. The bromine content of the halite ranges from 1.3 to 10.4 mg/kg. The halite does not originate from the evaporation of the dilute inflow waters of the Altiplano, which would lead to Br content of tens of mg/kg. The presence of halite of very low Br content (2 mg/kg) in a gypsum diapir strongly suggests that most of the halite deposited at Uyuni originated from the leaching of ancient salt formations associated with the numerous gypsum diapirs of the Altiplano. The deep and thick halite beds were probably deposited in a playa lake, as suggested by their very low and fairly constant Br content (1.6-2.3 mg/kg) and by the abundance of detrital minerals. -

chapter 6 Claudio Latorre, Julio L Betancourt, Jason A Rech, Jay Quade, Camille Holmgren, Christa Placzek, Antonio JC Maldonado, Mathias Vuille and Kate Rylander Late Quaternary history of the Atacama Desert Of the major subtropical deserts found in the Southern Hemisphere, the Atacama Desert is the driest. Throughout the Quaternary, the most pervasive climatic infl uence on the desert has been millennial-scale changes in the frequency and seasonality of the scant rainfall, and associated shifts in plant and animal distributions with elevation along the eastern margin of the desert. Over the past six years, we have mapped modern vegetation gradients and developed a number of palaeoenvironmental records, including vegetation histories from fossil rodent middens, groundwater levels from wetland (spring) deposits, and lake levels from shoreline evidence, along a 1200-kilometre transect (16–26°S) in the Atacama Desert. A strength of this palaeoclimate transect has been the ability to apply the same methodologies across broad elevational, latitudinal, climatic, vegetation and hydrological gradients. We are using this transect to reconstruct the histories of key components of the South American tropical (summer) and extratropical (winter) rainfall belts, precisely at those elevations where average annual rainfall wanes to zero. The focus has been on the transition from sparse, shrubby vegetation (known as the prepuna) into absolute desert, an expansive hyperarid terrain that extends from just above the coastal fog zone (approximately 800 metres) to more than 3500 metres in the most arid sectors in the southern Atacama. Our study focuses on rodent middens (cf. Betancourt et al. 1990). These are amalgamations of plant remains (including seeds, fl owers, leaves and wood), bones, insects, feathers and rodent faeces, glued together within a crystallised matrix of rodent urine. -

INTRODUCCION Durante mucho tiempo se ha pensado que el voluminoso relleno de depósitos aluviales y evapo ríticos de la depresión seguida por el río Loa, entre Calama y Quillagua (Fig. 1), correspondería a una sola formación, la Formación El Loa (Brüggen, 1950; Fuenzalida, 1957). Esta opinión prevalece todavía en estudios geológicos recientes (Boben rieth, 1980; Boric, 1980; Maksaev y Marinovic 1980), pese a que, en 1975, Rieu llamó la atención sobre la complejidad de los depósitos que rellenan la cuenca. Efectivamente, es posible distinguir va rias unidades estratigráficas, claramente separadas por discordancias de erosión (Fig. 2). Recientemente, Naranjo y Paskoff (1981) han caracterizado la estratigrafía del Cenozoico del sec tor comprendido entre Chiuchiu y Calama (22°20'- 22°27'S). -

HOVA DEL RlO LOA La hoya hidrográfica del río Loa~ con una superf! cie tota~'de 33 570 km2 , se desarrolla en el tercio norte de la IIa R~ gión de Chile, entre latitudes extremas 20Q52' y 22Q57' L.S. ylongit~ des 68QOO' y 7oQ02' L.o. El río Loa nace en la falda norte del Vn. Mi ño~ en los Ojos del Hiño, casi en los límites entre la la y IIa Regio nes de Chile, en 21Q15' L.S. y 70Q L.O~ Su longitud total se acerca a 440 km. A pesar de su extensa hoya, los recursos h!dricos provienen de la cuenca alta que comprende alrededor del 20% de la su~ perficie total. Con curso aproximadamente norte-sur~ el Loa reco rre casi 150 km en un profundo cañón de altura variable, desde su nací miento hasta el oasis de Chiu ~hiu, pueblo que se levanta en su margen izquierda. En este trayecto recibe sus dos tributarios más importantes que le caen del este: el río San Pedro o Inacaliri y el río Salado. En Chiu Chiu dobla su curso sensiblemente hacia el oeste para alcanzar en un recorrido de 115 km el punto denominado Chacance. En él se le reúne por la derecha el río San Salvador. En Chacance,el Loa toma franca di= recci6n sur-norte hasta fertilizar el oasis de Quillagua, despu~s de una trayectoria de 80 km. A partir de Quillagua el Loa describe un gran arco y luego desemboca en el Pacífico~ en Caleta Huel~n, despu~8 de trasponer el macizo costero en un tajo profundo~ de más de 500 m de al tura. -
