UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Reexamining Portamento as an Expressive Resource in Choral Music, Ca. 1840-1940 A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Musical Arts by Desiree Janene Balfour 2020 © Copyright by Desiree Janene Balfour 2020 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Reexamining Portamento as an Expressive Resource in Choral Music, ca. 1840-1940 by Desiree Janene Balfour Doctor of Musical Arts University of California, Los Angeles, 2020 Professor William A. Kinderman, Co-Chair Professor James K. Bass, Co-Chair This study reexamines portamento as an important expressive resource in nineteenth and twentieth-century Western classical choral music. For more than a half-century, portamento use has been in serious decline and its absence in choral performance is arguably an impoverishment. The issue is encapsulated by John Potter, who writes, “A significant part of the early music agenda was to strip away the vulgarity, excess, and perceived incompetence associated with bizarre vocal quirks such as portamento and vibrato. It did not occur to anyone that this might involve the rejection of a living tradition and that singers might be in denial about their own vocal past.”1 The present thesis aims to show that portamento—despite its fall from fashion—is much more than a “bizarre vocal quirk.” When blended with aspects of the modern aesthetic, 1 John Potter, "Beggar at the Door: The Rise and Fall of Portamento in Singing,” Music and Letters 87 (2006): 538. ii choral portamento is a valuable technique that can enhance the expressive qualities of a work.

She never stopped speaking truth into me and reminding me how good I am at this whole teacher/scholar thing. And she filled our home with music, the best writing support of all. I also owe a debt to the fifteen composers who took the time to talk to me about their work, as well as all the composers over the years who have translated their musical instincts into words through interviews.

  • NEIL GIRALDO, FOUNDER & CHAIRMAN of the BOARD Neil
2018 Three Chord Neil Giraldo Discography NEIL GIRALDO, FOUNDER & CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD Neil Giraldo was born in 1955 in Cleveland, Ohio. Immersed in the culture of his beloved Sicilian ancestry, his parents Anthony and Angela instilled the love of music at a young age, giving Neil his first guitar at the age of six, with the hopes that he and his sister, Priscilla, who played the accordion, could entertain family and friends with songs from the old country after church on Sundays. As Neil got older, his mentor, Uncle Tim, introduced him to revolutionary bands like The Yardbirds, The Kinks, The Rolling Stones, and all the other great guitar-driven rock ‘n’ roll bands of the 1960s. Finding new and innovative ways to shadow path his way into songs, Neil developed a discipline early on of not just playing along to his favorite artists, but creating different parts for himself within those tracks. At the same time, the budding guitar artist also became proficient on piano by continuously practicing along to Chuck Berry (Johnnie Johnson), Fats Domino, and Jerry Lee Lewis records. His interest in percussion instruments soon followed; practicing the drums to Simon & Garfunkel albums he explored how different rhythms could alter the complexion of songs. These practices and disciplines created the foundation for his future success as an innovative record producer and musician. Giraldo began his professional career in 1978 as a key member of the Rick Derringer band after competing against 200 other guitarists for the position. It wasn't long before Rick discovered Giraldo’s piano playing prowess and quickly put those skills to work in the studio for the recording of Guitars and Women.

  • Rock Album Discography Last Up-Date: September 27Th, 2021
Rock Album Discography Last up-date: September 27th, 2021 Rock Album Discography “Music was my first love, and it will be my last” was the first line of the virteous song “Music” on the album “Rebel”, which was produced by Alan Parson, sung by John Miles, and released I n 1976. From my point of view, there is no other citation, which more properly expresses the emotional impact of music to human beings. People come and go, but music remains forever, since acoustic waves are not bound to matter like monuments, paintings, or sculptures. In contrast, music as sound in general is transmitted by matter vibrations and can be reproduced independent of space and time. In this way, music is able to connect humans from the earliest high cultures to people of our present societies all over the world. Music is indeed a universal language and likely not restricted to our planetary society. The importance of music to the human society is also underlined by the Voyager mission: Both Voyager spacecrafts, which were launched at August 20th and September 05th, 1977, are bound for the stars, now, after their visits to the outer planets of our solar system (mission status: https://voyager.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/status/). They carry a gold- plated copper phonograph record, which comprises 90 minutes of music selected from all cultures next to sounds, spoken messages, and images from our planet Earth. There is rather little hope that any extraterrestrial form of life will ever come along the Voyager spacecrafts. But if this is yet going to happen they are likely able to understand the sound of music from these records at least.
