INTRODUCTION According to Ayurveda, the skin has seven layers, located not only superficially but extending to the deeper levels of the body. A skin disease is, mostly, rooted deeply into various dhatus or tissues like fat, muscles, blood etc. Most skin treatments are generally external applications like creams or oils. These, however, never reach the deeper layers of the skin. As a result, the symptoms disappear temporarily, and the disease is not rooted out permanently. Ayurveda always tries to root out the disease by treating it specifically according to its cause. As the disease is deep seated it is difficult to fix the problem quickly. [1] Ayurvedic skin treatment may take a few week to remove the symptoms but the disease are treated permanently. MATERIALS AND METHOD How to Know our Ayurvedic Skin Type? When out of balance, Pitta Skin can flare up in rashes, acne or sunspots. Kapha Skin tends to have all the qualities of water and earth. It can be oily, Thick, Pale, Soft, cool and more tolerant to Sun. Kapha skin tends to age slower and forms less wrinkles than the other two types. Kapha skin may struggle with dull complexion, enlarged pores, excessive oil, blackheads, pimples, moist type of eczema and water retention. “Combination” Skin can be Vata-Pitta , Skin i.e both dry and sensitive, Kapha-pitta Skin is oily and sensitive, and Vata-Kapha Skin i.e generally dry with some oily zones. [2] The Ayurvedic approach to caring for combination skin takes into account environmental and seasonal factors. For Example, A person with Vata-pitta skin would follow the recommendations for pitta-skin in summer and Vata skin in winter. The Kapha-Pitta type would follow pitta recommendations in summer and Kapha recommendations in winter. The Vata- Kapha type would be best served by generally following Vata guidelines, with extra cleansing of the oily zone. Vata Skin Care- For Vata skin to stay youthful, skin care products used should be very nurturing. They must include some essential oils and herbs in combination, which can nourish the skin and rehydrate it, otherwise it may be susceptible to wrinkles and premature ageing. Going to bed on time, eating regular meals, and following a regular daily routine are essential components of a holistic approach to Vata skin care, as are eating foods that help balance Vata and nourish the Vata skin.
