Can- Dom- tate ino Choir School News A Newsletter for Alumni & Friends of Saint Thomas Choir School SUMMER/FALL 2017 SUMMER/FALL The Class of 2017 FROM THE HEADMASTER’ S DESK After fourteen years at Saint Thomas, I’ve become eligible for my first-ever sabbatical, a six-month period beginning on July 1, 2017. During my absence, Amy Francisco, our seasoned English teacher, will expand her responsibilities to serve as Acting Head of School. As the newsletter goes to press, I’m making final preparations for this exciting opportunity and passing the reins into Ms. Francisco’s capable hands. My time away will be divided between two spots rather unlike West 58th Street: Morocco and Marseille. I’ll be working in parishes with significant ministries to refugees, and the focus of my daily life and work will shift markedly from my “day job.” Rather than addressing the educational needs of young people, I’ll be helping persons from different creeds and cultures who seek a better life for themselves and their families, often against great adversity. As stimulating as these challenges will be, I shall miss the rhythm of our common life at Saint Thomas. Happily, time apart is beneficial: it reminds us of our many blessings and our capacity to build meaningful relationships in new contexts. I look forward to returning to Saint Thomas in January 2018 with fresh perspectives – and stories to share. You are always in my thoughts and prayers. –Charles F. Wallace, Headmaster GRADUATION The ninety-eighth commencement exercises of the Choir School were held on June 10.

The Complete Obama Timeline February 2016 On February 1, 2016 more than $100 billion in assets is released to Iran. (The White House had claimed it would be only $50 billion. One or both of the two parties is lying.) [87369, 87380, 87381, 87405] The Sun reports that Great Britain “is home to more than 3 million Muslims for the first time ever with more than half born outside the UK, according to new figures. Soaring immigration and sky high birth rates have seen the number in the country double in a little over a decade. Some parts of London are now almost 50 per cent Islamic, according to analysis from the Office for National Statistics. If current trends continue the areas could become majority Muslim within ten years. …Followers of Islam now make up one in every 20 people within the country.” (The process is “birth jihad” or “stealth jihad.” Muslims take over an area first via immigration, both legal and illegal, and they then dominate the culture as a result of their phenomenal birth rates— all the while collecting welfare benefits funded by taxpayers who fear being shamed as “Islamophobes” if they object. Parts of Europe are being destroyed in the process.) [87371, 87372] Workers at a refugee center in Sweden are banned from holding a memorial service for co- worker Alexandra Mezher, who was killed by a migrant, in order to “secure the well-being of the children.” (Translation: “We do not want to upset the Muslim refugees or let them think killing Swedes is not an acceptable pastime.”) [87427, 87429] CNN reports that leftist billionaire George Soros has donated $6 million to Hillary Clinton’s political action committee (PAC).

The United States has a long history of journalists exposing self-interested behaviors of political or corporate elites with investigative journalism. With online media, journalistic practices encompass fact-checking against a variety of sources, and countering the claims of other journalists from competing outlets. This article aims at delimiting the rhetorical properties of an emerging genre of YouTube counter-journalism. The study reports on a rhetorical and eristic analysis of the main patterns of countering in a sample of videos posted on YouTube on the subject of the US presidential campaign in spring 2020. The analysis reveals some ways in which YouTube journalists break down the dominant media narratives and present counterclaims and critiques, which is usually accompanied by fact-checking, showcasing evidence and providing alternative explanations or counterarguments. However, counter-journalism is not free from eristic devices that may misrepresent political issues for the subscribers. • Isolationism
Isolationism Oxford Research Encyclopedia of American History Isolationism Justus D. Doenecke Subject: 20th Century: Post-1945, Foreign Relations and Foreign Policy Online Publication Date: Aug 2017 DOI: 10.1093/acrefore/9780199329175.013.49 Summary and Keywords For the United States, isolationism is best defined as avoidance of wars outside the Western Hemisphere, particularly in Europe; opposition to binding military alliances; and the unilateral freedom to act politically and commercially unrestrained by mandatory commitments to other nations. Until the controversy over American entry into the League of Nations, isolationism was never subject to debate. The United States could expand its territory, protect its commerce, and even fight foreign powers without violating its traditional tenets. Once President Woodrow Wilson sought membership in the League, however, Americans saw isolationism as a foreign policy option, not simply something taken for granted. A fundamental foreign policy tenet now became a faction, limited to a group of people branded as “isolationists.” Its high point came during the years 1934– 1937, when Congress, noting the challenge of the totalitarian nations to the international status quo, passed the neutrality acts to insulate the country from global entanglements. Once World War II broke out in Europe, President Franklin D. Roosevelt increasingly sought American participation on the side of the Allies. Isolationists unsuccessfully fought FDR’s legislative proposals, beginning with repeal of the arms embargo and ending with the convoying of supplies to Britain. The America First Committee (1940–1941), however, so effectively mobilized anti-interventionist opinion as to make the president more cautious in his diplomacy.
