Arabic Localisation: Key Case Studies for Translation Studies Arabic Localisation: key case studies for Translation Studies Nada Al-Mazrooa A thesis submitted at the Cardiff School of Modern Languages in candidature for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Translation Studies on June 2018 Scanned with CamScanner 2 Abstract This thesis investigates the practices of Arabic localisation as it presents a neglected area of localisation research, localising to a developing market. The thesis aims to establish a connection between localisation and Translation Studies, by exploring the ways in which this area can be theorised starting from the approaches developed by Lawrence Venuti (in particular the notions of foreignisation and domestication), and Christiane Nord (translation as interpersonal activity). Creating a theoretical framework which marries the cultural turn and functionalist approaches helps address the dynamics of Arabic localisation on both micro and macro levels. The thesis also aims to provide a holistic view of Arabic localisation, by considering translation processes and outcomes, and by attempting to understand how Arabic localisation is perceived by its target audience. In order to achieve these goals, the thesis presents three case studies devoted, respectively, to the FIFA 15 video game, the Knorr website and the educational platform Blackboard Learn. It follows a mixed method approach to answer about the unique nature of each case study. This includes text analysis which covers each medium’s localisation literature, the Arabic translated content of the selected products and related business articles. In addition, relevant online materials, such as gaming fora and Youtube gaming channels, are analysed to assess the response of the FIFA and Knorr target audience to the translation they receive. Due to the privacy of Blackboard Learn’s content and users, access to a student’s and an instructor’s accounts were sought from an Arabic university, and a questionnaire was developed to assess quantitatively and qualitatively the Arabic users’ response to the platform’s Arabic localisation. The significance of this thesis lies in its methodology and findings. Employing strategies from a range of backgrounds, academic, professional and social, produces a novel methodology for translation research and for addressing the complexity of the discipline of localisation, as well as understanding the effect of its technical and commercial aspects on translation practices and outcomes. By approaching localisation from a Translation Studies perspective, the thesis contributes to both disciplines. The thesis highlights the ways in which localising to a developing market is different from many of the practices discussed in the localisation i literature. In addition, the context of Arabic localisation proves to be a fertile ground where Venuti’s theory of foreignisation and domestication can be relocated, and the debate about it acquires new nuances. ii Acknowledgement The completion of this thesis is owed to many individuals in my academic and personal life, to whom I express my gratitude. The process typically involves language technologies, and the degree of adaptation varies according to marketing criteria. Straight translation is thus only part of localization, which creates problems for the role of translators in this high- growth sector. 1. Introduction Cross-cultural communication via websites, and of the elements that comprise the individual screens of each site, is one of the fastest growing areas opened up by the era of electronic communications. The basic standard known as Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) was first proposed in 1991 and has been followed by similar technical conventions, notably Personal Homepage Tools (PHP) from 1995 and Extensible Hypertext Markup Language (XHTML) from 2005, with each technical innovation bringing greater complexity. The translation and localization of websites has thus become a lucrative, dynamic and inter-professional field, often involving marketing, design, and software engineering, as well as linguistic processes. At the same time, the development of the Internet as an interactive medium is giving rise to a series of creative non-professional translation practices. In theory, the translation part of work on websites need not be any different from any other kind of translation, since texts can be extracted from site, rendered in accordance with the required communicative purposes, then reinserted into the site. The localization of websites, however, involves more complex processes, in addition to the normal constraints and goals of translation.

This accessibility would not be possible without translation which plays an important role in linguistic and cultural media- tion, as well as in marketing. As the majority of products is promoted for and sold on the internet, their web pages are often localized based on the market, including the language and the culture. The required speed in this type of work, its tools and process play a remarkable role which influences the quality of the localized texts. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze these texts, explore the different interpreta- tions of a text in several languages and cultures, and the adaptation level which should convince the consumer to purchase the product. This pilot study is an at- tempt to compare the product descriptions provided in English and localized into Arabic and several French versions. The results show the relationship between the international text and the localized texts on the linguistic and cultural levels. 1 Introduction We are living in a globalized world where translation is a daily-lived practice (Ladmiral 2014). Gregory Introduction How many of us have had the experience of looking at the geographic location of "hits" on our organization's website and being amazed at the traffic coming from all over the globe? No matter what type of organization we are working within, there is a need to think globally. The majority of the literature on website globalization is written for the corporate e- commerce audience. The e-commerce definition is that "Web site globalization is the configuring of a company's Web site so it can be used to market and sell products outside its home country."2 But most of the advice given about website globalization applies no matter what the mission of the organization.

These indus- try professionals typically either have no formal education in translation, interpreta- tion, and localization management or completed their degree many years ago and look to the Monterey Institute short programs to enhance their skill set in specific areas such as Computer-Assisted Translation, Website Localization, or Court In- terpretation. While enrollment numbers for some traditional, in-residence graduate degree pro- grams at the Monterey Institute have been stagnant, there has been a growing de- mand for the short programs the Monterey Institute is offering, as well as for hy- brid and online-only courses. The reality of shrinking budgets The ability to teach translation tools and processes depends heavily on the availabil- ity of industry-specific tools.
