Davenportbook14.Pdf 1 Dear Teachers, Dancers, Families and Friends, Welcome to Tribute National Talent in Davenport, Iowa. This year we are celebrating our 3rd year and we are so blessed to have the honor and privilege of seeing some of the most talented teachers and dancers in the country. Each event is very special to us as we treasure the time that we share with so many wonderful people who truly are important to us. The art of dance is something that touches our lives as it allows our hearts and minds to focus on something that is such a gift. We all have the opportunity to witness the hard work that each and every dance teacher and choreographer shares as they dedicate so much of their heart and soul into their work. Seeing the dancers perform each and every piece gives a sense of pride and joy not only for the teacher and choreographers, but also for the family members who see the dancers doing what they love. One of the most powerful rewards of dance is not the trophy or award earned, rather it is having those moments on stage to inspire and to make an impact on others. So we say thank you to all of the teachers, choreographers and their dancers for your dedication and determination to make a difference through dance that we will all cherish for many years to come. I have always wanted Tribute to stand for more than just a dance competition. I wanted to share a visible appreciation and gratitude with everyone in attendance. This year we are once again inviting dancers to share personal stories about their parents. The Tribute to my Parents Award has become a trademark of Tribute National Talent and has definitely touched others in a way that you would not expect at a dance competition. The sharing of love, appreciation and respect gives a behind the scenes story of how dance families live their lives and the memories that are made. Dancers pour their hearts into the essays they write and for me personally it is a strong reminder of the importance of family. This award has given me a way to honor my late father and I know if he were here today he would absolutely love this award and what it stands for. We all know there is love, respect and appreciation at home, but it is also in every dance studio. A dance teacher is more than someone who teaches dance, they are part of the family and can make a huge difference in the lives of dancers. The hugs that are shared, the joy from the smiles on faces, and above all the admiration that is felt is so wonderful. Dance has truly given children a very positive atmosphere to learn, love and live out their dreams. When I was deciding to create Tribute 3 years ago I did some research and I realized that there were over 150 different competitions and conventions to select from. In that decision process, I followed my heart and I knew that if I believed in myself and did my part to make a difference then everything would be just fine. There are times when you take risks in your life and looking back over the last 2 years I am very humbled to be in the position I am in and to see Tribute grow each year in a way that I am very grateful. I want everyone to know that your selection to attend Tribute this weekend means so much to me and my family. We know you have so many choices on which events to select and we are so appreciative that Tribute was on your calendar this year. With a loving and caring staff we will do our best working together to make sure you leave this weekend feeling appreciated and loved. Many Blessings to you and yours in this new year of dance, 2 On behalf of the staff we welcome you to Tribute Darin Troglia Adam Penney Spencer Ralston CEO Master of Ceremonies Backstage Manager Duffy Johnson Vince Sylvester Gil Mata Backstage Merchandise & Host Auditor & Judges Host Brittney Smith Lois Troglia My Family Merchandise & Host My Mom Jonah, Olivia Karen & I 3 Introducing your Judges Johnette Rutledge – California As a third generation dancer, Johnette Rutledge knew from a young age she wanted a life filled with dance. • External Mindfulness, Secure (Non)-Attachment, and Healing Relational Trauma: Emerging Models of Wellness for Modern Buddhists and Buddhist Modernism
Journal of Global Buddhism Vol. 17 (2016): 1-21 Research Article External Mindfulness, Secure (Non)-Attachment, and Healing Relational Trauma: Emerging Models of Wellness for Modern Buddhists and Buddhist Modernism Ann Gleig, University of Central Florida Much scholarly attention has been devoted to examining the incorporation of Buddhist-derived meditations such as Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) into psychotherapeutic and medical settings. This paper approaches the cross-fertilization of Buddhist and therapeutic notions of wellness from the opposite direction by exploring Dharma Punx teacher Josh Korda’s interweaving of psychoanalytic developmental theory and affective neuroscience into his Buddhist teachings. Korda provides a useful case study of some of the main patterns emerging from psychotherapeutically informed American Buddhist convert lineages. One of these, I argue, is a “relational turn,” a more context-sensitive approach to individual meditation practice and an increasing interest in developing interpersonal and communal dimensions of Buddhist practice. In conclusion, I consider what Korda’s approach and this relational turn suggests in terms of the unfolding of Buddhist modernism in the West. Keywords: Buddhism; Buddhism in America; Buddhism and Psychoanalysis shaved-headed man covered in bright tattoos and dressed casually in a green t-shirt and black sweat pants sat comfortably, one leg over another, in a chair at the front of the room. As he smiled at the sixty or so retreatants before him, a Asimilar glimmer to the chunky silver jewelry on his fingers and wrists came off his front teeth. With the ease that his informal attire suggested, Josh Korda shared that he was feeling excited and nervous.

iâ,o / + THE BLACK SPIRIT: A TRILOGY OF ORIGINAL PLAYS AND A TREATISE ON DRAMATIC THEORY IN CONTEMPORARY BLACK DRAMA John S. Scott A Dissertation Submitted to the graduate school of 3owling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY March 1972 K /lû 3")v.rm - ■-Ê'IÀo vyû. \Qû> -p, X © 1972 John Sherman Scott ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Through recent Black Drama has drawn considerable critical attention, the dramatic theories of contemporary 31ack playwrights have been neglected and misunderstood. This study creatively and theoretically explored the import of Black aesthetics and the intent of Black playwrights’ dramatic language and structure. The problem was to isolate and define the assumptions, language, and actions operating in Black aesthetics and, further, to identify my dramatic intentions and those of other Black playwrights. This study attempted to define what contemporary Black drama is about, suggested what it ought to be about, and postulated a basis for critical evaluation. A theoretical discussion and description of the Black Spirit provided a background for the specific notions of aesthetics and dramatic intention, which could be related to, compared with, and drawn from. Beauty, Order, Language and Action were discussed in relationship to the theory of the Black Spirit. Following, a trilogy of original plays is presented. These plays reflect the creative efforts of one 31ack playwright operating with a conscious awareness of the theoretical Potions of the Black Spirit. The study concluded that the Black Spirit is a pri mordial aesthetic of mellifluous, polyrhythmic, spontaneous and infinite dimensions.

American Music Review The H. Wiley Hitchcock Institute for Studies in American Music Conservatory of Music, Brooklyn College of the City University of New York Volume XLVI, Issue 1 Fall 2016 Hamilton: Diverse America and the Second Generation Advantage Philip Kasinitz, Graduate Center, CUNY Of all the bizarre news stories to permeate social and mainstream media in the days following the election of Donald Trump, few were as surreal as the “Twitter war” surrounding the controversy between the incoming president and the cast of the Broadway musical Hamilton. The dispute started on the evening of 18 November when Vice President elect Mike Pence attended the hit show with his children. Knowing Mr. Pence would be in the audience, the creator of Hamilton and original star, Lin-Manuel Miranda, wrote a short address to him on behalf of “diverse America” expressing fears about the Trump administration. The address was delivered during the curtain call by one of the show’s stars, Brandon Victor Dixon, who portrays Pence’s ill-fated predecessor Vice President Aaron Burr. Pence, who had been booed upon entering the theater, left while the address was being given although he later insisted he had not walked out in protest and had listened to the short speech in the lobby (leaving during the curtain call to avoid crowds is common practice for celebrities and secret service protectees). Pence never responded directly to the concerns raised and, perhaps unwilling to get into a debate with a fictional character, diplomatically insisted that he had not been offended by the remarks and that he had enjoyed the show and its “talented” cast.
