It’s true, Hi-Fi Choice has long supported vinyl even in the slump years, and the last six months have been an interesting time for the format as record sales continue to grow beyond all expectations and the number of turntable models coming to market is also steadily on the rise. As editor, I am proud of our ‘passion for sound’ tag line and strive to reflect real-world hi-fi market 55 trends and the most interesting new audio products to Audio-Technica share with fellow hi-fi fans. Vinyl is no longer a revival ATH-A2000Z format, it’s back, and as demonstrated by the variety of different turntables on show at the Munich High End Show – see our Show Report on page 10 – is appealing to audio fans on all kinds of budgets looking to reconnect with music in a tangible way that can seemingly only fully be achieved with the vinyl format. Of course it really isn’t all about vinyl, and reviews of digital sources are on their way as soon as the products arrive. Like you, we simply enjoy listening to music in the best quality available. Cast your mind back to the early days of CD and you'll no doubt be able to remember that the key stumbling block for the format wasn't related to the high price of the players, the fact that early adopters were slow in coming forward or that people were determined to stick with vinyl, but it was down to the scarcity of software. The take-up of CD was surprisingly swift and people across the UK were keen to try out the new indestructible (ahem) music technology that they'd seen being demonstrated on Tomorrow's World. But the diff iculty came in finding anything decent to play on it. Many labels regarded CD as an audiophile format and so wrongly assumed that it was only suitable for classical recordings. Incredibly, even after Dire Straits became the first album on CD to outsell vinyl, the music industry was surprisingly sluggish in jumping onto the bandwagon. Skip forward some 30-odd years and the landscape has changed significantly (ironically vinyl is back on the rise), but the story remains the same, only this time you can substitute CD for MQA. For those that haven't been paying attention, Meridian's MQA performs the magic trick of squeezing a quart into a pint pot, using Meridian Lossless Packaging (MLP) to produce hi-res-quality files that don't take up as much space as rivals. The technology is deeply impressive, but as compact disc proved (almost to its detriment), if the software isn't available it doesn't matter how good the technology is.

By John Henry Warburton Abstract This work looking at radio over the last 80 years and digital radio today will consider picture radio, one way that the recently introduced DAB1 terrestrial digital radio could be used. Chapter one considers the radio history including early picture radio and television, plus shows how radio has come from the crystal set, with one pair of headphones, to the mains powered wireless with built in speakers. These radios became the main family entertainment in the home until television takes over that role in the mid 1950s. Then radio changed to a portable medium with the coming of transistor radios, to become the personal entertainment medium it is today. Chapter two and three considers the new terrestrial digital mediums of DAB and DRM2 plus how it works, what it is capable of plus a look at some of the other digital radio platforms. Chapter four examines how sound is perceived by the listener and that radio broadcasters will need to understand the relationship between sound and vision. We receive sound and then make pictures in the mind but to make sense of sound we need codes to know what it is and make sense of it. Chapter five will critically examine the issues of commercial success in radio and where pictures could help improve the radio experience as there are some things that radio is restricted to as a sound only medium.

Consequentially, while the role of album art has evolved to meet the changes in music technology, it is hard to measure the effect of digital streaming on modern album art. This research seeks to determine whether or not graphic design still plays a role in marketing information about the music, such as its genre, to the consumer. It does so through two studies: 1. A computer visual analysis that measures color dominance of an image, and 2. A mixed-design lab experiment with volunteer participants who attempt to assess the genre of a given album. Findings from the first study show that color scheme models created from album samples cannot be used to predict the genre of an album. Further findings from the second theory show that consumers pay a significant amount of attention to album covers, enough to be able to correctly assess the genre of an album most of the time.

    Sedlmayr: Power, Death and the Value of the Body in Late Capitalism 42 Power, Death and the Value of the Body in Late Capitalism: Anohni’s “Drone Bomb Me” GEROLD SEDLMAYR Technische Universität Dortmund, Germany Introduction Hopelessness The lead single of Anohni’s 2016 album , “Drone Bomb Me”, begins with a shocking imperative: the speaker demands that the addressee eliminate her by dropping 1 a bomb on her: “Explode my crystal guts / Lay my purple on the grass”. Surely, her forthright urge to die is eerie, unsettling. What is even more unsettling, though, is the fact that we are not given any explicit reasons which might help explain her motivation. Is she tired of living? If so, then she is willing to break one of the most potent taboos in our societies, namely the one forbidding suicide: suicide as an empty act, an act that is not simply meaningless within the larger order of things, but that in fact seems to threaten that larger order. Or may we categorise her death wish as self-sacrifice, the symbolic giving of life in order to ensure life? The question remains: why does she resist survival? In the following, Anohni’s song, as well as the video which accompanied its release, will be treated as symptomatic of the late-capitalist structure of feeling. Starting from Jean Baudrillard’s idea that power in contemporary consumer societies is based on the deferral of death, I will discuss how the aestheticized representation of postmodern drone warfare in “Drone Bomb Me” refers to, yet also extends, Michel Foucault’s analysis of modern disciplinary societies, particularly by reflecting on the status of the body and the value it can carry in late capitalism.
