American Historians and German Medieval Scholarship: A Comment Otto Gerhard Oexle Preface For the first time since the founding of the German Historical Institute in 1987, the topic of the 1995 Annual Lecture addressed the German Middle Ages—as perceived through American eyes. We invited two distinguished scholars from the United States and Germany, and their presentations made this evening a truly special event. In his lecture, Professor Patrick J. Geary traced the influence of German medievalists, especially their methods and historiography, on American academia. During the second half of the nineteenth century, German scholarship came to be regarded as an exemplary model, owing to its scholarly excellence. However, within a few decades, German medieval scholarship's function as a model for American academics declined. Professor Geary gave an engaging account of this development and offered at the same time an absorbing analysis of how the perception and interpreta- tion of German medieval history by American historians were shaped by their attempt to explain American history. -

When a map, drawing or chart, etc., was part of the material being photographed the photographer followed a definite method in "sectioning” the material. It is customary to begin photoing at the upper left hand corner of a large sheet and to continue photoing from left to right in equal sections with a small overlap. If necessary, sectioning is continued again — beginning below the first row and continuing on until complete. 4. The majority of users indicate that the textual content is of greatest value, however, a somewhat higher quality reproduction could be made from "photographs" if essential to the understanding of the dissertation. -

LANDRY,, A THESIS Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in the Department of History in the Graduate School of the University of Alabama UNIVERSITY, ALABAMA 1958 PREFACE Roger Ascham was probably the greatest teacher in Elizabethan England. The period is graced with the name of his most famous and most spectacular pupil - Elizabeth Tu.dor. His life was dedicated, if indeed to anything, to the Greek ideal of "a sound mind in a sound body •." In addition, he reached a zenith as probably the greatest Latin letter writer in England. This achievement is all the more remarkable since his era was one of scholarship in the language of ancient Latium and of Rome. Yet, he is without a biographer, except in short sketches prefacing the editions of his writings. The purpose of this thesis is to collect some of the thoroughly scattered material and look a little more close ly at Ascham as a student, scholar, and particularly as a teacher. Every effort has been made to work with source material. Old English spellings have been modernized to provide continuity, uniformity, and smoothness of reading. Exceptions will be found in original book titles. Making a study of ideas is like steering a tricky passage between the perils of Scylla and Charybdis. In narrow straits the channel is often both,deep and indeter minate. The navigation of such a passage, even on my unlearned and far from comprehensive level, would have been impossible were it not for the generous assistance of a number of people. -

Philip D. Curtin Presi dent American Historical Association 1983 Philip D. Curtin, president of the American Historical Association, is the Herbert Baxter Adams Professor of History at Johns Hopkins University. Born in Philadelphia in 1922, Professor Curtin spent the majority of his younger years in West Virginia, returning to Pennsyl vania to finish secondary school, and to enter Swarthmore College in 1941. Interrupting his undergraduate work for three years’ service in the United States Merchant Marines, Professor Curtin completed the BA, Phi Beta Kappa, in 1948. Upon receipt of this degree he undertook graduate studies at Harvard University, gaining the MA and the PhD in 1949 and 1953 respectively. Professor Curtin’s dissertation “Revolution and Decline in Jamaica, 183D—1865” marked the beginning of an outstanding scholarly career addressing the social and economic influences shaping African and Caribbean history. Dr. Curtin’s teaching experience is extensive. Beginning in 195D with a teaching fellowship at Harvard University, he transferred in 1953 to Swarthmore College, rising from instructor to assistant professor of history before moving on to a nineteen-year engagement at the University of Wisconsin, Madison in 1956. While teaching at Wisconsin he founded and intermittently chaired both the Comparative World History and African Study programs, as well as the Department of African Languages and Literature (the first program of its kind in the United States); in 197D he was appointed the Melville J. Herskovits Professor of History. In 1975, Dr. Curtin returned East to teach at Johns Hopkins University where he chaired the Program of Atlantic Studies in History and Culture from 1976—79, and in 1982 was appointed the Herbert Baxter Adams Professor of History, a position he currently holds. -

Obituary Brenda Elizabeth Moon MA MPhil PhD FRSE an appreciation I well remember Brenda’s arrival in Edinburgh University Library on the first day in her new post. A note in my diary for Monday 7 January 1980 reads, portentously, “Miss Moon comes”. I remember having been able to keep that first day clear for her to meet and talk to senior staff, particularly to the Secretary to the Library, Nancy Watt. Brenda arrived having driven from Hull with a one-night stopover in a hotel at Berwick- on-Tweed. Here she had spent the evening finish- ing off a biographical note on Marianne North for a new edition of North’s A Vision of Eden, which was already at press and which the printer and publisher were awaiting to complete the print run. She posted it the following day, and met her deadline. I later discovered that this was typical of Brenda: she always had unexpected extras on hand – and she met her deadlines. Brenda’s honeymoon period at Edinburgh was short if, indeed, it existed at all. A note in my diary for her second day reads “Dr Ottaway to see Librarian”. Jim Ottaway was the vigorous Convener of the Library Committee’s On-Line Sub-Committee, and a meeting of the On-Line Sub-Committee was scheduled for that Friday afternoon. The Library Committee had already decided that the future lay in automated systems. Brenda had triumphantly managed the installa- tion of the country’s first Geac installation at the Brynmor Jones Library of the University of Hull. -

Dawes Archive Biography: Charles Gates Dawes (1865-1951), prominent in U.S. politics and business, served as Comptroller of the Currency (1898-1901), director of the Military Board of Allied Supply (1918-1919), and first director of the Bureau of the Budget (1921). He received a Nobel Peace Prize as chairman of the Reparations Commission which restructured Germany's economy and devised a repayment plan (1924). He was elected Vice-President (1925- 1929), and appointed ambassador to England (1929-1931) and chairman of the Reconstruction Finance Corporation (1932). Charles and his brothers founded Dawes Brothers Incorporated. Dawes formed the Central Trust Co. in Chicago (1902), guided its successor banks, and was influential in Chicago business, politics, and philanthropy until his death. Charles Gates Dawes was born and educated in Ohio. He married Caro Blymyer in 1889, practiced law, and incorporated a real estate business in Lincoln, Nebraska, before moving to Evanston, Illinois in 1895. He acquired utility companies and real estate in northern Illinois and Wisconsin; and in 1908, with his brothers Henry, Rufus, and Beman, formed Dawes Brothers Incorporated, to invest assets in banks, oil companies and real estate throughout the country. Various acquaintances who were prominent in political and industrial affairs trusted them to manage their investments as well. Other companies in which Charles Dawes and his brothers played leading roles included Chicago's Central Trust Co. and its successor banks and Pure Oil Company of Ohio. Dawes made significant philanthropic contributions to the Chicago metropolitan community. -

1 A BIO-BIBLIOGRAPHY OF ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL HISTORY D.A. FARNIE and GEOFFREY TWEEDALE 5th Edition 2009 2 Preface to Fifth Edition This is the fifth edition of A Bio-Bibliography of Economic and Social History. Its originator and chief author, Douglas Farnie, sadly did not live to see its completion and publication. He died in Manchester on 21 June 2008, aged 82, following complications from heart surgery. The first edition of Douglas‟s Bio-Bibliography was published in Pat Hudson (ed.), Living Economic and Social History. Essays to Mark the 75th Anniversary of the Economic History Society (2001). It listed about 700 individuals. Characteristically, Douglas had been expanding and revising it ever since. It went through further editions, each more expansive than the last. This edition covers over 3,500 individuals. My involvement began casually in 2001, when I began passing Douglas obituaries and snippets of information for inclusion. The amount of information gathered pace as I began using electronic sources to fill gaps and to supplement the material that Douglas was still collecting from libraries and paper sources. Douglas never used a computer (or even a typewriter) and always preferred to use a pen. However, the world-wide-web fascinated Douglas and when it became apparent that it could transform the scope of the Bio-Bibliography, we began to collaborate on producing a much expanded fifth edition. A routine developed. From early 2007 until 27 March 2008, we met once a week at Manchester Metropolitan University Business School not only to revise the electronic copy of the Bio- Bibliography, but also to scour the web for new material. -

_ E • — •— C.) •- • — Cl) Q .- •— — C C - Cl) •— Caroline Walker Bynum Caroline Walker Bynum promised us, in the introduction to her book Fragmentation and Redemption, history not with the somber cadences of tragedy but rather in a comic mode. There is no question she has kept her word. One of the most influential practitioners of the art alive, she holds readers and listeners captive with the sheer delightfulness of her curiosity, her inventiveness, and her imagination. It is hard to conceive of so serious a contribution to learning made with more joyful enthusiasm or greater confidence in the redemptive potential of human existence. It’s fair to say that Caroline Bynum has been preparing for a life in scholarship from the start. For her there is no boundary between her life and her work, and she has always made the fullness of her own experience available to students and readers while retaining the ardor of her intellectual vitality in the intimacy of family life and friendship. Surely this organic unity of life and learning explains the appeal of her work, a running commentary on the most human aspects of the human stories she has chosen to tell. Born in 1941, raised and educated in Atlanta, Bynum never lost the drawl slowly rounding off her sentences or the liquid tones a Georgian accent brings to even the harshest discourse of conferences and colloquia. Yet she has spent most of her adult life in the North, starting at Radcliffe and continuing at the University of Michigan, where she completed her B.A. -

The CMP framework has been in operation at the University of Edinburgh since 2015 and complies with the Arts Council England (ACE) Museums Accreditation Scheme 2011 standard and Archives Accreditation Standard for collections management policies. 2.
