Agatis Kampus IPB Dramaga Bogor 16680 ABSTRACT Ants are insects whit a nuisance in residential areas. Overall the presence of ants is strongly influenced by the availability of food, temperature, and humidity. This study aims to determine the diversity, dominance, and abundance of ants species urban settlement of Bogor. The study was conducted on February to June 2015 by purposive random sampling method at 10 markets, 25 restaurants, inside of the 30 houses and at perimeter of 30 house. Ants were collected by bait traps at 180 spots ( markets, restaurants, and inside the houses) and by hand collection at 30 spots of houses perimeter. The results showed that there were 11 ant species of three subfamilies (Dolichoderinae, Formicinae, Myrmicinae) in the markets, restaurants, and inside the houses. While, there were 20 ant species of 6 subfamilies (Dolichoderinae, Formicinae, Myrmicinae, Ponerinae, Proceratiinae, Pseudomyrmecinae) in house perimeters. The highest relative abundance and dominance of ant species in the market and inside the houses was Paratrechina longicornis, while in the restaurants was Anoplolepis gracilipes, Dolichoderus thoracicus was the highest abundance in perimeter of the house. Diversity index of ant species in the four locations were moderate category (H'= 1,2 at the market, H'= 1,6 at the restaurants, H'= 1.5 in the houses, and H'= 2.2 at houses perimeter). Contribution of four coconut plantations (CP) and four non-agricultural lands (NL) for sustaining diversity and relative abundance of ground-dwelling and ground-foraging ants was investigated by surveying them from May to October, 2018, in a CP and a NL in Minuwangoda, Mirigama, Katana and Veyangoda in Gampaha District that lies in the wet zone, Sri Lanka. Worker ants were surveyed by honey baiting and soil sifting along two transects at three, 50 m2 plots in each type of land. Workers were identified using standard methods and frequency of each ant species observed by each method was recorded. Percentage frequency of occurrence observed by each method, mean percentage frequency of occurrence of each ant species and proportional abundance of each species in each ant community were calculated. Species richness recorded by both methods at each CP was 14–19 whereas that recorded at each NL was 17–23. Shannon-Wiener Diversity Index values (Hʹ, CP: 2.06–2.36; NL: 2.11–2.56) and Shannon- Wiener Equitability Index values (Jʹ, CP: 0.73–0.87; NL: 0.7–0.88) showed a considerable diversity and evenness of ant communities at both types of lands.

In parabiosis, two unrelated ant species share a nest and foraging trails in a potentially mutualistic association. I have focused on the Neotropical parabiosis between Camponotus femoratus (Subfamily: Formicinae) and Crematogaster levior (Subfamily: Myrmicinae), which occur in ant- gardens throughout Amazonia. These two ants share a common nest but keep their brood in separate chambers. Behavioral tradeoffs suggest that the relationship is a mutualism: both species build the carton nest and forage, but Cr. levior is superior in finding food sources, and Ca.

A regional identification key of Camponotus species is provided from the Shivalik hills of Indian Himalaya. Abstract The paper highlights the status of research on ants of Sri Lanka, based on published information and ongoing research of the author. A total of 181 ant species in 61 genera have been recorded from Sri Lanka, which includes the endemic and relict monotypic genus Aneuretus. Majority of the ant species recorded from Sri Lanka belong to the subfamily Myrmicinae. The Genus Camponotus (Formicinae) includes the highest number of ant species recorded so far in the island. Key words: Ants, Species, Distribution, Research An overview of past research on ants of Sri Lanka Ants are a very common group of insects in most terrestrial habitats in Sri Lanka. Their habitats vary from highly disturbed urbanized areas to undisturbed forests. They inhabit buildings and outdoors, their microhabitats extend into soil (even up to a depth of 20 cm) decaying wood, plants, trees, litter, termite nests etc. Bingham (1903) was one of the very first to publish a list and descriptions of ant species recorded from Sri Lanka.
