  • Razvoj Bojevanja V Mestih V Obdobju Globalizacije
THE EVOLUTION OF MILITARY COMBAT IN URBAN TERRAIN IN THE ERA OF GLOBALIZATION Numerous changes have happend in the world after the Cold War and particulary at the beginning of globalization.

MEMORY TRACE FAZAL SHEIKH 2 3 Front and back cover image: ‚ ‚ 31°50 41”N / 35°13 47”E Israeli side of the Separation Wall on the outskirts of Neve Yaakov and Beit Ḥanīna. Just beyond the wall lies the neighborhood of al-Ram, now severed from East Jerusalem. Inside front and inside back cover image: ‚ ‚ 31°49 10”N / 35°15 59”E Palestinian side of the Separation Wall on the outskirts of the Palestinian town of ʿAnata. The Israeli settlement of Pisgat Ze’ev lies beyond in East Jerusalem. This publication takes its point of departure from Fazal Sheikh’s Memory Trace, the first of his three-volume photographic proj- ect on the Israeli–Palestinian conflict. Published in the spring of 2015, The Erasure Trilogy is divided into three separate vol- umes—Memory Trace, Desert Bloom, and Independence/Nakba. The project seeks to explore the legacies of the Arab–Israeli War of 1948, which resulted in the dispossession and displacement of three quarters of the Palestinian population, in the establishment of the State of Israel, and in the reconfiguration of territorial borders across the region. Elements of these volumes have been exhibited at the Slought Foundation in Philadelphia, Storefront for Art and Architecture, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, and the Pace/MacGill Gallery in New York, and will now be presented at the Al-Ma’mal Foundation for Contemporary Art in East Jerusalem, and the Khalil Sakakini Cultural Center in Ramallah. In addition, historical documents and materials related to the history of Al-’Araqīb, a Bedouin village that has been destroyed and rebuilt more than one hundred times in the ongoing “battle over the Negev,” first presented at the Slought Foundation, will be shown at Al-Ma’mal.

  • The Maronite Catholic Church in the Holy Land
The Maronite Catholic Church in the Holy Land The maronite church of Our Lady of Annunciation in Nazareth Deacon Habib Sandy from Haifa, in Israel, presents in this article one of the Catholic communities of the Holy Land, the Maronites. The Maronite Church was founded between the late 4th and early 5th century in Antioch (in the north of present-day Syria). Its founder, St. Maron, was a monk around whom a community began to grow. Over the centuries, the Maronite Church was the only Eastern Church to always be in full communion of faith with the Apostolic See of Rome. This is a Catholic Eastern Rite (Syrian-Antiochian). Today, there are about three million Maronites worldwide, including nearly a million in Lebanon. Present times are particularly severe for Eastern Christians. While we are monitoring the situation in Syria and Iraq on a daily basis, we are very concerned about the situation of Christians in other countries like Libya and Egypt. It’s true that the situation of Christians in the Holy Land is acceptable in terms of safety, however, there is cause for concern given the events that took place against Churches and monasteries, and the recent fire, an act committed against the Tabgha Monastery on the Sea of Galilee. Unfortunately in Israeli society there are some Jewish fanatics, encouraged by figures such as Bentsi Gopstein declaring his animosity against Christians and calling his followers to eradicate all that is not Jewish in the Holy Land. This last statement is especially serious and threatens the Christian presence which makes up only 2% of the population in Israel and Palestine.

  • Ethiopian National Project Mid-Year Report 2016-2017
Ethiopian National Project Mid-Year Report 2016-2017 The Ethiopian National Project (ENP) was created by Jewish Federations as Diaspora Jewry’s tool to address the needs of Ethiopian-Israelis in partnership with the Government of Israel and the Ethiopian-Israeli community itself. The transformation ENP has succeeded in engendering is no less than extraordinary: scholastic gaps are closing, educational performance is improving, risk situations are decreasing and empowerment is broadening with each passing year. The Ethiopian National Project – Transformation of a Community ENP aims to ensure the full and successful integration of Ethiopian Jews into Israeli society. ENP’s methodology of holistic interventions on a national scale that fully include the Ethiopian-Israeli community, while strictly adhering to the critical importance of external evaluations to measure the impact and effect of ENP’s work, has resulted in unequivocally successful programs. In fact, due to its success, this school year brings new and exciting changes to ENP’s SPACE Scholastic Assistance Program, as part of a four-year initiative by the Government of Israel requesting that ENP expand its reach to 8,729 students in 35 cities nationwide while including 20% non- Ethiopian-Israeli students. In addition, where traditionally the Ministry of Aliyah and Absorption was the leading government ministry to spearhead ENP’s work, from 2016 the Ministry of Education will take the leading role as part of the new four-year initiative. In addition, the Jewish Federations of North America (JFNA) recently launched a campaign to raise matching dollars over four years to ensure that ENP can expand its SPACE Scholastic Assistance Program nationwide.

economies Article Academic Research, Higher Education, and Peripheral Development: The Case of Israel Gad Degani 1,2, Dan Levanon 2 and Gregory Yom Din 1,* 1 Tel-Hai College, Upper Galilee 1220800, Israel; [email protected] 2 MIGAL—Galilee Research Institute, POB 831, Kiryat Shmona 1101602, Israel; [email protected] * Correspondence: [email protected] Abstract: The aims of this study are to identify possible socioeconomic impacts of MIGAL (Galilee Research Institute) and TH (Tel Hai Academic College) on the peripheral northeast’s development. We discuss the effects of academic research and institutions of higher education on mitigating differences between the center and the periphery of the country. MIGAL is a regional R&D center in the northeast peripheral region of Israel. An internationally recognized applied research institute, MIGAL specializes in biotechnology, computational sciences, plant sciences, precision agriculture, and environmental sciences, as well as food, nutrition, and health. Most of MIGAL’s researchers serve as the core faculty at TH. Despite the country’s small surface area, socioeconomic inequality in Israel is high by OECD standards, with wage differences between rich and poor regions reaching up to 400%. In this article, a new type of dataset for the study of the socioeconomic impact of academic research and higher education on peripheral development is proposed—the regional socioeconomic indices (SEIs). Data for MIGAL, TH, and the northeastern peripheral region were collected from the yearly reports of the two institutions and the Israel Central Bureau of Statistics. MIGAL was found to serve as a link between research, academic teaching, and socioeconomic development Citation: Degani, Gad, Dan Levanon, in the northeast periphery.
