Yarnton Blues FC, celebrating 21 years of youth football

Firstly, welcome to all our new players and welcome back to our existing players; we hope you all have an enjoyable season of football. With teams from U6s right through the age groups to U15s playing matches, we have a very busy and full programme of fixtures ahead. It's been a great start to the season so far; here's a summary of how each team has started: Under 6s: The children at this age are not allowed to play competitive matches, but they have been training in the park ready for next season. If your child wants to join in, or just give it a try, then come over to the park on Thursdays at 5 p.m. Under 7s: Our youngest team has played on three occasions, and each time players were able to be involved in two games each Saturday. The manager reports the children are putting in lots of effort and really enjoying playing against other teams. Goals have been scored by Drew Wilson, Kieran Oliver, Adam Robson, Ritchie Dawe, Oliver and Luke. Under 8s: The U8s have played some closely fought matches and the players are really enjoying the football. Ryan King, George Dawson and Harri Dawson have all scored for the team. Under 9s: In their first ever match the team had a great start by winning 6-1. George Hetherington scored a hat trick, Ben Robson 2 and Rowan McLead 1. The matches following have been closely fought and they are looking for their next win. Under 10s: With two wins and two defeats the U10s have got off to a good start in the A league, which is producing a high standard of football. Goals have come from Nathan Emmett, Jake Towsey and Max Blackburn. Under 11s: The under 11s have got off to a very impressive start by winning all four of their matches. They have scored 21 goals, from Ryan Harrison, Lewis Coleman, Calum Rolfe, William Cadwaladr, John Josh, Luke Trafford, Blayne Oliver and Jordan Le-Roux. Under 12s: With three wins out of four the U12s have made a good start scoring 20 goals along the way. These have come from Jack Spittle 13, Sean Chapel 2, Jonah Barnes 2, Louie Bass, Jack Sale and Alex Innocenti. Under 13s: The under 13s have also made a good start by winning three out of four. They won two league matches with goals from Charlie Pieton 4, Lloyd Belcher 2, Sammy Hart and Jack Barker. They then played Hook Norton in the first round of the knockout cup and beat them 3-1. Under 14s: The U14s have won both of their league matches by beating Cumnor Minors 7-2, with goals from Lewis Metcalfe 3, Stephen Chappel 2 and Cameron Elpheck 2. The second match they beat Ducklington 4-1. Under 15s: Two out of three wins for our oldest age group, the first beating Hook Norton 4-2, with goals from Matteo Barraclough 2, George Watson and Ben Millard-Green. The second was a good victory in the first round of the cup by beating Carterton Colts 4-2. It was a closely fought game with a 2-2 score at full time. It went to extra time with Yarnton coming out the winners. Yarnton-with-Begbroke History Society

On Tuesday, 15th November Hugh Granger is coming to talk to us about Barnes Wallis, who, amongst other things, invented the ‘bouncing bomb’ which was used so effectively to attack dams in the Ruhr valley during World War II. Most of us will remember the film and book entitled ‘The Dam Busters’ which told the story of this wartime episode. But there are many other things to learn about Barnes Wallis, and Hugh Granger’s talk is entitled ‘A Tribute to Barnes Wallis’. Refreshments: Edward and Joanna Bailey. The meeting in Yarnton Village Hall starts at 7.45 p.m. Visitors most welcome (£2 including refreshments). Helen Anderson

Yarnton Medical Practice

The practice is delighted to welcome Dr. Sarah Morris back to the surgery. Dr. Morris is replacing Dr. Amarnath, who has left to take up a post in Shropshire. It is flu season again. The Department of Health recommends the vaccination for all of those over the age of 65 years, all pregnant women, plus those patients who have asthma, heart disease, diabetes, COPD or are immune deficient. Please make an appointment to see a nurse for your jab. Carol Cripps, Locum Practice Manager, tel. 842292

Agrivert Slurry Lagoon

Residents in Yarnton will know of the concerns raised when Agrivert Limited announced their intention to create a large open lagoon to store digestate arising from their waste composting site at Worton. There were worries about bad odours and health issues arising from the stored slurry, despite the Environment Agency and Health Protection Agency insisting that there would be no such risk. Despite these reassurances, a group of residents has been active in gathering evidence and pressing the company for some control measures for the lagoon, given that all other operations at the site are in-vessel and completely sealed. I am delighted to say that Agrivert has now agreed to provide a cover for the lagoon. Whilst not required as part of the planning permission, Agrivert has made this very generous move to alleviate residents’ health and bad odour worries and to maintain its good relationship with the local community. Michael Gibbard

Dear all,

On Sunday 13th November we have our Remembrance Day service at St. Bartholomew’s at 3 p.m. (Please note that there is no 11 a.m. service that Sunday, but instead a special Holy Communion service at St. Michael’s, Begbroke, which takes place at 10.30 a.m.). The aim of the service of course is to remember those who have given their lives in service in wars and conflicts past and present. If you would like to have someone’s name read out at that service, wherever they are from or whichever conflict they were a part of, please fill in and return the form on the next page. At the end of November we begin Advent, and a special Advent Family Service is on 27th at 11 a.m. Advent Sunday marks the start of the Church’s preparation for Christmas, with all the expectation and excitement that celebration brings. Our services though do offer a quiet reflection on the true meaning of Christmas, so do take time out to come along and join us as we celebrate what God is doing in the person of Jesus Christ, and what his birth means for us. God bless you, Andrew.

Conclusion of Audit: BDO LLP have informed Yarnton P.C. that the audit for the year ended 31st March 2011 was completed on 24th September and the accounts are now available for inspection by local electors in accordance with Section 14 of the Audit Commission Act 1998. The following matters have been raised to draw items to the attention of Yarnton P.C. • Fidelity Guarantee • Risk Assessment • Restatement of fixed Assets Fidelity Guarantee: The Council should consider the level of insurance cover and set it to a level that will protect the Council against potential loss. The Council should review the level of cover at least annually, as circumstances may change throughout the year. Risk Assessment: The Council must ensure that a risk assessment is carried out as part of its review of the effectiveness of internal control before the end of the financial year. The review of effectiveness of internal control and risk assessment must be reviewed and minuted as evidence of the review being undertaken annually before the end of the financial year. Restatement of Fixed Assets: The comparative figure in box 9, total fixed assets, disclosed in Section 1 of the Annual Return does not agree to the audited Annual Return for the year ended 31st March 2010. The comparative figure in box 9 was restated and BDO have verified this figure. This restatement does not affect the balances carried forward into 2011. No further action required. Diamond Jubilee Celebrations: The Parish Council invites residents’ suggestions as to any form of community celebration to mark Her Majesty the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee 2012. Sunday 3rd June 2012 is the day identified particularly for street parties and community events and could be appropriate for a Yarnton Community Event. All feasible suggestions are welcomed, with Yarnton Park being a possible venue. The Council would also welcome names of individuals or organised groups who could contribute to the planning and organization of such an event. Any suggestions can be made to the Parish Clerk via. email: [email protected] or tel: 378476. To date only two residents have responded. Queen Elizabeth II Fields in Trust: Further to previous articles, it is now time to vote for our nominations of Yarnton Park and Little Marsh Playing Field. The nominations can be viewed on the internet at www.qe2fields.com following the link and entering the post code OX5. Residents can vote until 17th November. Voting will be by internet only. An IP address will only be allowed a single vote per nominated site. Multiple votes can be cast via local libraries, internet café and school facilities. This will be a significant opportunity for residents to ensure that our recreational facilities stay just that. Your votes are crucial for the success of having our two playing fields registered for this scheme. Oxfordshire Youth Bus – will return on 12 October 2011 Following previous articles, a reminder that the bus will visit the village every Wednesday from 7 p.m. to 9 .p.m until 22nd February 2012. The exact location of the bus will be advertised via notice boards throughout the village. At a time when youth provision is being reduced across the county, Yarnton residents are fortunate to have such a facility available for the young people. Hopefully the bus will be well used by them. The bus is in great demand across the area. Compostable Caddy Bin Liners Reminder: The caddy bin liners are still selling well and stocks at the Parish office in the Village Hall will be maintained for collection on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m., or will be delivered by arrangement if more convenient and not possible to collect. Welcome to Yarnton Booklets: The booklet can be viewed and downloaded on the website www.yarnton-village.org.uk and is available from the parish office at opening times, and also from the post office at Yarnton. Berkeley Homes site: We have been notified by Cherwell D.C. that further properties have now been or are about to be occupied at Yarnton Green, and the process will continue during 2011 until the 168 properties are complete. During November we are looking at shapes and patterns - particularly concentrating on pretty shapes made by fireworks…..and the loud bangs, the whizzing and the whirling! Senior Club

During September four members celebrated their birthdays; they were Jim, Harold, Frances and Barbara. We always do our best to give a rousing chorus of Happy Birthday. Our last outing was on 8th September to Tewkesbury for a coffee stop and then on to Worcester for the afternoon. The weather was again in our favour, lovely sun all day. We stopped in Broadway to draw our raffle. We have had many enquiries about a shopping trip, which we always used to do in November for Christmas, but this was not suggested at the beginning of the year, so was not included in the itinerary. We had many comments and thanks for very enjoyable trips and especially how lucky we were to have sunshine on each trip, as the weather was so unpredictable this summer, so on behalf of the Club I would like to thank everyone who supported us. On 24th November we shall have our Christmas Lunch in the Village Hall, 12.30 p.m. for 1 p.m. – not 12 noon please. Jose Green, tel. 375644

A Popping Surprise!

What a special treat it was at the end of September/ beginning of October to have some lovely warm days. As I sat in the garden catching a few rays of sun, I was puzzled by some loud popping noises. I had heard it before while jobbing about in the garden, but thought it was someone doing some DIY. Much to my surprise it turned out to be the seed pods on our everlasting sweet peas – popping open and sending the seeds inside flying everywhere. I had never seen or heard such a thing before – nature is full of surprises. I was fortunate enough recently to spend a week on St. Mary’s, Isles of Scilly with some of our family. I love staying on small islands, being surrounded by sea and exposed to all the elements. Many years ago we had taken our children there when they were little. So this time it was wonderful to share the islands with our grandchildren. We had great fun looking in rock pools, finding crabs, catching shrimps, getting soaked on boat trips and swimming in the sea with seals nearby. All these – making memories to pass on to the next generation – it was a wonderful thing to do. Ellen Cocking

ORCC (Oxfordshire Rural Community Council)

Buy central heating oil early for Christmas ORCC Trading is urging everyone with oil central heating to buy their oil early this winter so they avoid last year’s huge December spike in the price. The cost per litre rocketed from around 45p per litre to more like 70p per litre in just a few short days, and early buying is essential if people are to save money. Since it started last year, the ORCC bulk oil buying scheme has meant savings of around 4p per litre or more for its members (compared to average oil prices on the day of purchase). And if you’re buying 1,000 litres this is a significant saving – twice the annual membership cost! Nearly 30 local communities have now got volunteer co-ordinators in place and the more members there are, the more negotiating power we have. So if you haven’t yet joined, and haven’t yet thought about your winter oil order, DON’T DELAY! You can join by going to www.oxonrcc.org.uk where you will find an application form and payment details, plus information about all the monthly prices and savings to date. Or telephone 01865 883488 for further details. BIG win for Youth Clubs! Oxfordshire Association for Young People (OAYP), Oxfordshire’s principal charity supporting the county’s volunteer-run youth clubs, is delighted to announce the intended creation of 21 new volunteer-run youth clubs in communities across the county. The funding for OAYP’s Community Link-Up project totals £296,000, and comes from the Big Lottery Fund’s (BIG) Reaching Communities programme, a fund that is dedicated to supporting groups working with communities across the country. ‘We are delighted that the Big Lottery Fund is financing our Community Link-Up project’ said Becky Telford, OAYP’s Development Co-ordinator. ‘This project focuses on working with communities county-wide, especially those in isolated rural areas, who want to provide youth clubs or other services for the young people living there. At these times of cuts in the County Council’s services to youth clubs, it is fantastic to give these communities some good news – that OAYP will be on hand to help them develop appropriate and sustainable youth provision where they live’. Community Link-Up, due to start in early 2012, will work with 21 communities over a three-year period, to research the needs of young people, and with Parish Councils, volunteers and others to meet these needs. Glyme Valley Probus Club For Ladies

Our Speaker in September, Terry Richards, came to talk to us about the work that goes on behind the charity that we all cherish, which is the RNLI. This excellent charity was founded in 1824 by Sir William Hillary, who was a very benevolent politician whose work began in the Isle of Man. Since this time over 130,000 lives have been saved and countless more people have been rescued. The charity is 100% funded by voluntary donations and 97% of the lifeguards and fundraisers are indeed voluntary. Historically, the charity existed purely to help fisherman in difficulties at sea, but today a very different rescue service exists. Lifeguards now patrol various beaches, and very interestingly inshore lifeboats are also used as well as hovercrafts. Loch Ness has its own lifeboat, (too many monster hunters in that very deep loch getting into difficulties, perhaps). The Thames also has its own lifeboat, based at Tower Bridge and is the busiest station in the UK; the lifeboat there is manned by paid professionals. However, many lifeguards and fund raisers give their time and skills voluntarily and the service here in the UK covers 19,000 miles of coastline. We were told about the various sizes of boats and their costs and maintenance; the larger and faster boats can cost several millions of pounds. The Queen is the Patron of the RNLI and has been throughout her reign, and the Duke of Kent is the President, from whom our Speaker recently received a

gold medal for his very worthwhile work and fundraising, although he very modestly told us that since his early days as a sailor he happily joined the RNLI as a volunteer

Oxford Harmonic Society celebrates its ninetieth anniversary

Oxford Harmonic Society starts its 90th anniversary celebrations this year with what promises to be a rousing performance of Handel’s Messiah in Oxford Town Hall on 26th November. Throughout the season the choir will celebrate 90 years of singing in Oxford, from humble beginnings as the Iffley Glee Club in 1921 to today’s 120- strong chorus drawn from all over the city and surrounding area. The choir takes pride in combining the traditional choral repertoire with lesser-known and unusual pieces, and this season is no exception. Other works to be performed are Mahler’s 2nd Symphony, a rare performance of Loewe’s Passion Oratorio, and Haydn’s Creation. Rated as ‘consistently impressive’ by the Oxford Times, Oxford Harmonic Society always aims for high standards and attracts top professional soloists. The choir welcomes enquiries from enthusiastic potential members, and prides itself on its friendly and welcoming atmosphere. For more information, see the choir website www.oxfordharmonicsoc.org or telephone Julie Fisher (membership secretary) 01865 310579. For tickets: Oxford Playhouse 01865 305305.
