High Efficiency Heating
High Efficiency Heating
Mike Pace – Senior Engineer
National Grid C&I Efficiency Programs Prescriptive Controls
• Energy Star Programmable Thermostats • A thermostat that is able to be programmed to set back temperature to a low setting during times of low use.
2 Prescriptive Controls
• Boiler reset controls • A reset control is a device that automatically controls the boiler water temperature based on the outdoor air temperature. Boiler water can run a little cooler the warmer it is outside - saving cost to heat the boiler water, energy savings can be in the 5 % range • 1 stage • multi-stage
3 Heating Equipment • Boilers • Steam boilers produce steam for heat or process. • 82%-85% AFUE is considered high Efficiency for a steam boiler
4 Heating Equipment • Hydronic boilers are hot water boilers – most typical boiler type • 85% AFUE/Thermal efficiency is considered a high efficient boiler
5 Heating Equipment
• Condensing Boilers
• How does a condensing boiler work ?
• Very similar to a hydronic boiler except it is designed capture even more heat from the flue gases. The flue gases give up their latent heat, forming condensate.
• Flue Gas temperature of Condensing boiler is 120-140 degrees
• Flue Gas temperature of standard hydronic boiler is 250 to 400 degrees
• High efficiency condensing boilers are 90 % or higher

7 Heating Equipment
• Condensing Boilers
8 Efficiency Improvement for large boilers
Fire Tube & Water Tube
9 Efficiency Improvements for large boilers
Fire Tube Boiler with linkage controls
10 Efficiency Improvements for large boilers
Fire Tube boiler with linkage 2-5% Fuel less controls Savings !!!
11 Efficiency Improvements for large boilers
Other Measures to think about Standard & Condensing Economizers Blow Down Heat Recovery Blow Down Controls
12 Heating Equipment
• Condensing Unit heaters
• Unit heaters are probably the most common piece of heating equipment in any warehouse type work space
• Condensing Unit heaters work on same principal as Condensing boilers
• 90 % efficiency is considered high efficiency
13 Heating Equipment
• Infared Heaters – 2 types
• Low intensity tubular heaters generate radiant heat like the sun and is absorbed by objects, such as floors and equipment, this heat then is re-radiated back out to the surrounding area
• Efficiencies to 90%
• Extremely comfortable heat for warehouses, manufacturing space, garages etc
14 Heating Equipment
• Infared Heaters – 2 types High Intensity Infared Heaters
15 Heating Equipment
• Direct fired heaters
• Most frequently associated with make up air units.
• Make air units heat air that is brought into buildings to replace air that that is loss though air changes, this is especially important in buildings that purposely exhaust air such as manufacturing facilities, kitchens, laboratories
• Direct fired heaters are 100% efficient
16 Heating Equipment • Furnace
• Instead of heating water like a boiler a furnace heats air which is then moved by a fan through ductwork
17 Domestic Hot Water
• Hot water heaters
• Indirect
• The source of energy for indirect fired hot water is the boiler, boiler system water is circulated through a heat exchange within a well insulated hot water tank
• Very efficient because it eliminates flue gas losses ( no flue)
18 Domestic Hot Water
• Hot water heaters
• On Demand Tankless Water heater
• as the name suggest, there is no tank and hot water is produced instantaneously
19 Kitchen Equipment
• Cooking Equipment
• Commercial Steamer steam cookers
• Commercial Fryer
• This equipment can significantly reduce annual energy costs compared to standard efficiency units.
• Energy efficient cookers and fryers offer shorter cook times, higher production rate
20 Solar
Solar Thermal Hot Water • Use Solar as the energy to power a indirect hot water tank • Usually used in conjunction with a gas boiler
