Introduction Decreasing reserve of fossil fuels, raising comfort requirements in building and national objectives to reduce carbon dioxide emissions have prompted HVAC industry suppliers worldwide to research and develop innovative products able to respond to these new challenges. Definition of hybrid systems Hybrid systems have various terminologies in Europe. It is common to refer to bi- or multi-energy systems as hybrids. In this report, BSRIA consider hybrid system as a combination of two or more heat generators connected together as a “packaged” appliance, this may be in a single casing or in separate modules, but they can operate simultaneously and are assembled by one manufacturer.

In understanding of this report “Hybrid system” will be equipped with a dedicated smart controls that will ensure operation resulting in minimum running cost by choosing the least expensive energy and the mode of operation adapted to building needs.

BSRIA looks at hybrid systems dedicated to provide heating ‒ space and ‒ with cooling function as a possible option..

Atlantic The French Atlantic group has launched two types of Alféa Hybrid Duo systems:

Alfea Hybrid Duo Fioul - was launched in France early 2011. It combines an oil (oil = fioul in French) condensing boiler and an

air / water heat pump. Alfea Hybrid Duo Gas integrates a gas condensing boiler (24kW) and an air/water split heat pump. It has been commercialised in France and Italy since September 2011.

Talia Green Hybrid by Ariston has been available on the French market since June 2011 under Chaffoteaux brand. It is combining a wall hung gas condensing boiler and an air-source monobloc heat pump. The product is expected to be introduced in Italy in the next few months under the name of Genus Premium Evo Hybrid .

BDR Thermea

BDR introduced Luna Platinum CSI (Complete System Integration), its first hybrid system, under Baxi brand in Italy. The system integrates solar thermal, air / water heat pump and gas condensing boiler. It has been designed for installation in both, new building and renovation segment. Another hybrid unit is expected to be launched in 2013.

Bosch Thermotechnik Egalis/ Megalis Condens Hybride has been introduced to the French market at the end of 2011. The two versions combine an air source monobloc heat pump with a wall hung gas condensing boiler in one single casing; Egalis is providing space heating only and Megalis provides both space heating and sanitary hot water.

Both systems are also sold in Germany and in the UK but with a split heat pump version. They are also expected to be introduced to the Dutch market (Nefit) from Q4 2012. Hybrid solution based on exhaust air heat pump called Ventiline and the system with outdoor unit called Multiline are prepared.

Cosmogas launched the HP Dens in Italy in 2009. The system integrates air / water heat pump and gas condensing boiler and can be connected to solar PV panels. MHG Heiztechnik MHG has two types of hybrids in their range: ThermiPro Hybrid Heat Station has been first introduced in 2009. It offers a solar buffer storage tank, heat pump and gas-condensing boiler in one compact turnkey system. It can include ST panels and has a solar connection to the sanitary hot water system and for heating support. It is sold in Germany and in the UK. EcoStar Hybrid – combines oil condensing boiler with split air / water heat pump. It is available in Germany, UK and in France.

A unit called ThermSelect (ProCon Streamline in the UK) is being developed in Germany at the moment. It combines ground and air sourced heat pumps as well as solar panels. It is currently undergoing field trials. Riello

NexSirius the first hybrid model from Riello has been launched in the second half of 2010 in Italy. NexSirius is designed to work at low temperature and can be connected to UFH, coils and LT radiators. The system can provide both heating and cooling. In May 2012 a new 5kW output HP has been launched to meet requirements in new housing.

Techneco Elga Hybrid is a hybrid heat pump that Techneco has developed back in 2008 in cooperation with Vaillant and Carrier. The system is designed to be fitted with existing boiler and can provide both heating and cooling. Elga Hybrid HP is available in the Netherlands only. Vaillant

Genia Hybrid system was launched in October 2010. Two versions have been available so far: Genia Hybrid Compact dedicated mostly to new housing and Genia Hybrid Universel to be suitable for existing houses to be connected with a boiler. Both version are commercialised in France by Saunier Duval, the French subsidiary. In the UK the Compact version has been available since October 2010 and in the Netherlands AWB is selling the Compact Unit from April 2012.

Itho Daalderop (NL) HP Cool Cube has been introduced to the Dutch market in 2008-09. The unit integrates a 3kW air source HP and a gas wall hung condensing boiler and offer space heating only with an output of 24kW and space heating and sanitary hot water with an output of 35kW. Itho Daalderop currently sell the unit in the Netherlands and in Belgium but is looking to expand to other European markets among which Italy (cooperation with Immergas), Germany and France. In the UK, HP Cool Cube is still undergoing field-trial. Flat Energy Cube Characteristics Heat pump Itho Daalderop presented at VSK 2012 another type of hybrid system called Flat Energy Cube. & CO2 ventilation The concept is developed as a ‘plug-and-play’ system in order to renovate apartment blocks and terraced houses, combining a one-box , a storage tank, CO2-regulated& HRV ventilation and heat recovery. A complete metering, monitoring and control system is installed in the box for future carefree operation and maintenance on distance monitoring. This concept is specially developed for housing corporations and retirement homes. The Dutch conglomerate is looking to complete their first project with FEC by the end of 2012 in the Netherlands.
