Hello Dancers,

I can hardly believe it is spring already! Where did the winter go? I suspect a lot of snow- birds will be coming home soon. WELCOME BACK!

I want to thank everyone who has been prompt in getting their flyers and dance information in to me on time. It has made getting the Journal out on time so much easier. I appreciate it.

I was recently give a huge stack of very old Square Dancing magazines. I will include bits and pieces from these on occasion for your enjoyment.

There looks to be a great lineup of summer dancing. Hope everyone makes an effort to sup- port these events whenever possible. You will surely make new friends or reacquaint yourself with some old ones. See you there in a square!

President’s News

“My life is always under construction. There’s always something to improve.” Akcent, a Romanian Pop Artist. As I was clicking on the world wide web one day I came across this saying from Akcent pronounced Ascent for us English speaking folks. I thought long and hard about that comment. If I were to change the words, how would it apply to our activity? “Dancing is always under construction. There’s always something to improve.” As I look at the dance activity as a whole, we are always under construction. We just don’t always look at it that way. For some, they say if it’s not broken, don’t fix it. Well, many will say our activity has been in need of a renovation for years. For some clubs they have been remodelling their way of recruiting. We need to construct a product that becomes more attractive. A student of mine taking class at Elm Tree with her seven-year-old daughter and taking a course at St Thom- as University, was doing a presentation on Hip to Be Square Dancing. I myself never got to attend her presentation but she asked those in our club one simple question – Why do you dance? Ask yourself that question. Evaluate your answer. It might help construct ways to recruit new dancers in your club or someone else’s. It might also spark the idea that we never will know everything there is about dancing. We are always learning. We are always under construction ourselves. March. It is so hard to believe that it is March. Where have the first two months of 2017 gone? Before we know it, we will be into the celebration season where we welcome new dancers into our dance families. Some clubs have been fortu- nate enough to have a class this year and that is always a boost to any club and to the activity as a whole. Whether you are a brand new dancer or been dancing for years, remember what it was like to hit the dance floor that first time. Always be wel- coming and encouraging to our new dancers. We need their enthusiasm and drive to go forward. We always realize we have very faithful dancers who come out each and every week and if it was not for them our activity would have been obso- lete years ago. We thank all of you for the efforts that you give to the activity as a whole. March brings us closer to some very important dates in our activity. We all know that the 20th Annual Distinguished Ser- vice Awards Dance will take place on May 27, 2017 at the St. Mary’s Parish Hall in Miramichi. The callers for that afternoon will be Bruce & Donna Russell. Cuer will be Terry Hebert. Dancing is from 2:00 to 4:30 so please note the time. It is the day that we gather to acknowledge some great folks for all their hard work and dedication to the dance activity. Our gracious hosts that day will be Country Cousins Square Dance Club. Earlier in the morning at 11 am, please note the time, The Annual General Meeting will be held in the same loca- tion. Please plan to attend now. We will be continuing our discussion on recruiting and the age of social media. Speaking of social media, many of our clubs have now joined the age of Facebook. In a small research project in Fredericton, we found that social media gained us some of our new class. We ask that you consider for your club to join the new age. Some of the clubs that currently have pages are; Elm Tree Square & Round Dance, Tantramar Twirlers, Country Cousins, Sussex Corner Dance Club, Town & Country Squares, Pioneers and the Federation of Dance Clubs of New Brunswick. Soon to be online will be Hoban’s Heroes and Fundy Wheelers. Take a look, join their pages, comment and participate. As well, we recently had a rebuild of our website. A new sleek more user friendly site was built. You can also stay up to date on that page with our Facebook feed as it appears on the right hand corner. As always, some important dates to keep in mind. The ever popular NBPEI Caller’s Association Mt Whatley Dance is on Friday June 2, 2017. Dance to several Maritime Callers and Cuers. Dress is causal that evening, so please plan to attend. The second annual Square Dance Camporee at Five Islands RV Resort is from June 30 to July 2. Help sup- port our neighbouring province in this event. It sure proved to be a great time last year. As well, the widely popular Annual Strawberry Dance hosted by Washademoak Swingers Square Dance Club will be on July 8. The Terry Fox Fundrais- er will kick off the evening at 7:00 and dancing from 7:30 until 10:00. Dress for the weather, casual is always in style. Festival will be held on July 22 at the Best Western Glengarry in Truro. Please come out and support this great event. As well, the Annual Mick Mack Campout Weekend on August 11-12 rounds out the summer events. Melonie and I wish everyone a great “rest of your dance season”. Always remember to welcome a new dancer into your square as you were once in their shoes. Have a great spring and summer and we look forward to seeing you all in a circle or square!

Melonie and Terry Hebert, President Couple

Hoban’s Heroes Dance Club

Greetings and best wishes to all readers from the dancers at Hoban’s Heroes!!

Our club has been enjoying another great year of dancing under the wonderful leadership of Faye Germon and her husband, Gerry. It is great to see most of our members in attendance each Wednesday evening, although a few have been absent due to health issues. We miss them and hope they will be able to return to dancing soon.

We have enjoyed several special dances since our last communication with you. Our Harvest Dance was held in October in which other clubs were invited, a Flashlight Dance in November, and a very enjoyable Christmas Dance which was preceded by a lovely meal and followed by a light lunch.

Dancing in the new year began January 11 and since that time, we have held our Valentine Dance, a St. Patrick’s Dance on March 15 and a Western Dance on April 12. Our closing dance is scheduled for May 3.

Special thanks are extended to our President Couple, Don and Clare Jones and to our Treasurers, Gerry and Marion MacLellan for all of their hard work and dedication this dance year and as well as to our capable caller, Faye Germon, who keeps us enjoying dancing.

Hope you all have a great summer with lots of rest and relaxation.

Becky and Jarvis Mawhinney, Vice President Couple

8 9 Town and Country Squares

Goodbye 2016, Hello New Year. On December 16, we had a lovely pot luck supper and Christmas dance to close out our fall dance season. We had visitors from Elm Tree Squares and Woodstock. Lots of fun and everyone went home with their belly full.

On New Year’s Eve, two couples from our group went to the Elm Tree Squares’ New Year’s Eve dance. The food, the music, and the dancers were great. Even the games were lots of fun. Below is a picture of Linda Kinney dressed up as a snow- man… can you see the resemblance?

Towards the end of January, we held our first ever Hawaiian Dangle Dance. Gotta love those high- waisted swimtrunks!

9 10 Elm Tree Club News

Hard to believe the holidays have been over for more than two months and we are on the slip- pery slope to the summer months and the winding down of dancing. Where has the dance year gone?

A lot has been going on at Elm Tree this year. Like most clubs, we have experienced a few weeks of Mother Nature ruining our plans to dance. Mother Nature tried to snow on our New Year’s Eve Party but she held off until almost the end of the dance. We played a few games and danced the night away. For some the drive home was less than desirable. A good time was had by all!

When we started back in January after our New Years celebration, we began the first week celebrating National Hat Day with our Hat Dance, and we had a frosty night which included a lunch that evening of ice cream sundaes with all the fixings. In February we celebrated Groundhog Day, tried to celebrate Valen- tine’s Day but it was snowed out, and we have been hit by the Hot Dog curse again this year because that evening was cancelled as well.

We will now be looking towards April when we graduate our newest class and will have just over a square of new people joining our family. Our special dance for Graduation is on April 1 at Willie O’Ree. As well, we will be getting ready for our annual spring festival on May 5 & 6 at Willie O’Ree Place with our Guest Caller for the weekend being Kerry Fletcher and our own cuer Terry Hebert.

Our dancers will also be preparing to attend the Awards Dance being held in Miramichi at the end of May.

We would like to thank all our dedicated dancers who attend each week and all those who support our efforts during our special dances as well. A large thank you also goes out to our club caller Terry Hebert for all his hard work and weekly efforts.

We wish everyone a very safe and happy spring and summer and hopefully will see you in a circle or square sometime soon.

Sussex Corner Dance Club

Sussex Corner had an excellent season with some good demonstrations that have brought us both publicity as well as dancers, some to stay, and some just for one or two dances.

Our closing dance was held on one of the coldest nights of the fall season and we were consid- ering if it should have been cancelled, however it wasn't, and we had four and a half squares attend. Our international exchange students had a program of their own at the high school on that night, but everybody who was there had a great time. Our Guest Caller could not make it, as the weather in her area was not good. She was missed and many of the dancers asked about her.

The club this season has concentrated on the Two Step for our round dance program and we are looking forward to including the Waltz Step in the new year.

Our Graduation Dance will be held on April 7. Early rounds at 7:30 and squares from 8:00 to 10:00pm.

Our 6th annual New Year's Eve dance started at 9:00 pm with the Calling and Cueing of Ron and Barb Lowe. Our attendance was down a little from last year, due to some “iffy” weather, but we did have three squares plus a few. There was excellent finger foods available all even- ing and we danced squares up to the plus level, and “Square Dance Rounds” all evening with some uncued couples’ dancing included.

The weather deteriorated later in the evening with some snow, so “Midnight” was moved up to about 11:00pm, with the usual noise makers and balloons, and the ever important COUNT- DOWN. After that, those concerned could head out before the weather got too bad. This dance is not put on by any club, but by seven individuals, for the area in which we live, which includes several clubs.

The organizers are: Chris and Ruby Ayres, George and Bertha Johnston, (Sussex Corner), Lynn Browne and Ron Thompson, (Starlight Promenaders), Betty Mitham, (Hampton). There were many compliments regarding the evening as a whole, and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.

Oromocto Pioneers Square Dance Club

Greetings to all dancers from the Oromocto Pioneers! We celebrated National Hat Day on January 16th by wearing an array of fancy hats and earning a dangle as well. On January 21 we met at the Blue Canoe in Lincoln for breakfast. Our president, Iva Cliff, who has been undergoing cancer treatments, felt well enough to attend. We were so happy to see her and to be able to wish her a speedy recovery. On January 30 we had our Hawaiian dance. The site of snazzy colours, grass skirts and shorts certainly brightened up our spirits and made the winter weather more bearable. We ended the evening with pizza and, of course, “Hawaiian Pizza” was a popular choice.

Our Valentine's dance was cancelled because of the weather so we wore our “red” the following week. Feb- ruary 20 was the celebration of our favorite sports teams. Fans of the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Montre- al Canadiens were able to put their differences aside and enjoy dancing together in the same square! Feb- ruary 27 was Amateur Caller's Night and pie night as well. The amateur caller for the evening was Bill Scott and he did a great job calling for us. We had two squares on the floor that night and fifteen pies to share after the dancing was over. Wow! What a feast!

We celebrated some milestones in the lives of three of our former dancers. Wish and Marie Frampton cele- brated their sixtieth wedding anniversary and Hazel Fraser celebrated her ninetieth birthday. Congratula- tions!!

Our club has a page on Facebook. Have a look at the Oromocto Pioneer Square Dance Club page and “like” us.

We are hoping that our special Saint Patrick's Day dance will go on as planned from 1:30 to 4 pm at the Oromocto High School on March 11. The weather is so unpredictable despite what the groundhog might say. Our Christmas special will be on December 9. Our club thanks Gateway Tim Hortons for their weekly donation of timbits. We also extend our thanks to our dedicated caller, Gerry O'Hara, to our guest callers and cuers and to the dancers who attend our specials.

Washademoak Swingers Square Dance Club

Spring Greetings from the Washademoak Swingers Square Dance Club!

Our Christmas Dance was held on the evening of December 13, 2016, and we had a great turnout with more than three squares on the floor. Santa’s Elves arrived and passed out treats, and our club members raised funds which we donated to the Cam- bridge Narrows Community School.

We held our Annual Open House on January 13 and 31. Due to snowstorms, we had to cancel two regular dances and our Valentine’s Day Dance was one of the casualties.

Late last year, it was decided that our club should have a Facebook page. Thanks to Carolyn Hetherington for keeping our club information up to date.

Well, before we know it, summer will be here. Our 9th Annual Strawberry Dance will be held on July 8, 2017, from 7:30 pm -10:00 pm. Kerry Fletcher will be our Guest Caller/Cuer along with our own caller Terry Hebert. Again this year, the evening will begin with a skit, to raise donations for the Terry Fox Fund. Lunch will be served after the dance with our famous Strawberry Shortcake for dessert. Venue for the dance is Cambridge-Narrows Community School, 2158 Lakeview Road, on Route 715 in Cambridge-Narrows. Dress is Tasteful Casual Attire.

Our club meets every Tuesday evening, from 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm, at the Cambridge- Narrows Municipal Building and Terry Hebert is our caller. We’d love to have you visit us!

Tantramar Twirlers

Greetings once again from the Tantramar Twirlers. In early December, we were pleased to graduate four new dancers. We congratulate them, and welcome them to the enjoyable world of square dancing (shown in top left picture below).

Our last night of dancing in 2016 was on December 13 when we ate out, then gathered at our hall to enjoy dessert, dancing, carol singing, and a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus. The jolly Claus couple (aka Doug and Bonnie Leaman) distributed gifts and good cheer. We were pleased to have two former dancers join us for the evening.

When we resumed dancing in January, we welcomed a new couple and a returning dancer to the club family. We celebrated Valentine's Day with dancing and a delicious lunch. The ladies posed for the camera with luscious cut out lips and beauty marks.

On February 21, we held our annual Mt. Whatley Whoop-Up with dancers from Amherst, and Charlotte- town joining us for supper and dancing called by our club caller, Doug Leaman. Also joining us was our club mannequin sporting a blue wig and a club skirt. She is named Miss Manne Quin and was thrilled to be whisked around the floor by one of the visiting dancers. Midway through the dance, we greeted a guest caller to the stage, known only as the Mountain Man, who completed the dance. Doug in the meantime was nowhere to be seen and did not return to the hall.

We look forward to the rest of the dancing year where our shenanigans will no doubt continue.

Sets in Order Sets in Order Square Dance Magazine printed its final copy with the December 1985 issue after 37 years and 444 consecutive issues. It was a quality magazine devoted to just square dancing. The name came from the fact that in the early years, callers would start a square dance with “sets in order”. This was the signal to bring dancers to the floor.

This magazine contained where to dance, who was calling, where you could buy the proper at- tire, caller information on equipment and even workshop instructions, and so much more. While it was an American publication, it seemed to cover the world, with conventions as far away as China. It also included the First Annual Square Dance Convention in . The price of this magazine started at 75 cents.

During a beginner class, the editor notice a member “doodling” with paper and pencil between the tips. Frank Grundeen, who was an artist that had worked for Walt Disney, signed on to the magazine as the cartoonist. He continued providing cartoons for the magazine, in all 444 issues. Below is one of his cartoons from the October 1978 issue.

If anyone is interested in reading/seeing these older magazines, please feel free to contact Town & Country Squares. Some of the articles are still relevant today.
