That’s when the BALOISE SESSION opens its doors for the 32nd time. Ten star-studded evenings of concerts featuring 19 artists with powerful voices, great songs and energetic performances. Concerts held in the intimate club-like setting by candlelight are an experience not to be missed. Music fans can look forward to appearances by legendary guitar icon Chris Rea, the cult electropop duo Goldfrapp, hitmaker Nelly Furtado, international star Alicia Keys, the Brazilian maestro Gilberto Gil and German pop poet Max Giesinger. The OPENING NIGHT of the BALOISE SESSION features none other than Chris Rea. After years as a blues singer, he has returned to pop for his latest album. The British artist will be supported by the equally versatile Imelda May. Lift off for the «ELECTRONIC COSMOS» and enjoy an evening of electro vibes: On 25 October the English band Goldfrapp brings one of the most influential and atmospheric electro pop duos of the past two decades to Basel. The chart-topping British electro-crossover group Clean Bandit rounds off the evening’s entertainment. An evening chock-full of earworms: Nelly Furtado and Nek have both churned out catchy hits such as «I’m Like A Bird» and «Laura non c’e». Now the two POP SUPERSTARS appear together on 27 October at the BALOISE SESSION, bringing along old favourites like «Say It Right» and «Lascia che io sia» as well as songs from their current albums. On 29 October it’s time for «ICELAND CALLING»! The Icelandic music scene is gaining cult status. So it's high time to dedicate an evening to the country in the Far North. For the first time live in Switzerland, we bring you Kaleo: the electrifying shooting stars of 2017. Before that, Icelandic singer-songwriter Ásgeir will be capti- vating the audience with his spherical sounds. 31 October is «MAD MANN’S NIGHT»: they are part of England’s cultural musical heritage and have influenced an entire generation with their genres: Madness with ska, Manfred Mann's Earth Band with melodious prog-rock. Let the party begin! Enjoy «AN EVENING WITH …» Alicia Keys. The icon and winter of 15 Grammys will be performing on two consecutive evenings – 1 and 2 November – in what is, for her, the very intimate club-like setting of the BALOISE SESSION. Each concert will be opened by a prominent female singer on the local scene: Ira May and Annie Goodchild. Session Basel AG 21 October 2017 3 BALOISE SESSION 2017 21 October - 09 November 2017 _________________________________________________________________________________ On 3 November the BALOISE SESSION is honoured to present Kool & the Gang, arguably the most successful disco, funk and soul group ever. Dabu Fantastic from the Zurich Oberland will open the concert with toe-tapping dance sounds. «LET’S CELEBRATE»! On 7 November, Brazil and Africa come together at the Rhine knee: A world music summit at which the Brazilian maestro Gilberto Gil meets the duo Amadou & Mariam from Mali in West Africa. A multi-faceted encounter under the motto «HEAR THE WORLD»! Two of Germany's hottest pop poets meet on 9 November under the motto «MANN SINGT DEUTSCH». Both belong to a new generation of German pop-poets who evoke strong feelings through their songs. «Established global stars side by side with new musical discoveries; every year this is how we envision our programme, which evening after evening tells new stories and lets our audiences escape the everyday. Here the discovery of the year, Kaleo; there the international superstar Alicia Keys. In our view, a line-up of which we can be proud, and one that once more brings the world to Basel», says Beatrice Stirnimann, CEO. It’s a win-win situation as this then enables us to reach visitors at the hugely influential Pro Light+Sound Frankfurt at the end of the month, with arguably the most important edition of The Edge we have yet published. Rich in coverage from North America, we are also proud to bring you some groundbreaking stories from around the world. In the hierarchy of pro audio installs little causes as much excitement as projects undertaken by Steve Dash (Integral Sound) and Austen Derek (Aurateq) — particularly to any of us old enough and fortunate enough to have experienced the original Richard Long sound system at Paradise Garage nearly 30 years ago. Therefore your first port of call should be to page 6 where the new 3,360-capacity Ministry of Sound in Singapore is awash with Martin Audio components specified by these master technicians. On the domestic front we have been kept busy covering The Strokes (with Capital Sound), Chris Rea (with RG Jones) and the new ‘Virtual’ Frank Sinatra season (with Autograph Sound) who have used our equipment as their main PA arrays at the London Palladium. Working from reclaimed archives, the show has presented a major restoration and time-coding challenge as the Sinatra voice is ‘synced’ to a live 24-piece orchestra and 35mm footage appears on nine different moving projection displays.

  • A Level Music
A level Music Areas of Study – Other Perspectives NB: updates to this document were made in April 2021 and these are highlighted in yellow. © artwork: Mark Bolitho | Origami photography Pearson Education Ltd/Justin Hoffman Introduction This qualification features a Component entitled Appraising. The purpose of this component is for students to develop their listening and appraising skills through the study of music across a variety of styles and genres. The content is grouped into six areas of study, containing either two or three set works. This component gives students the opportunity to reflect on, analyse and evaluate music in aural and/or written form. To achieve this objective, students need to use their knowledge and understanding of musical elements, context and language to make critical judgements about the repertoire and context of music within the areas of study. Students should also study a range of pieces beyond these set works. The suggested other musical pieces for each area of study (see Appendix 4 of the specification) provide students with breadth, enabling them to place their knowledge of musical elements, context and language in a wider context, and apply their knowledge and understanding to more pieces of music. The suggested other music can help students to relate their learning to music in the set works, but their study is not compulsory. Teachers can identify and teach other pieces of music to support their students’ learning. The following music and musicians are examples of how each of the areas of study can be approached from a diverse range of other perspectives. The pieces have been chosen to encourage students to think beyond the mainstream and over-represented composers and styles of music, and instead to consider alternative and less well-known types and origins of music.

Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres by Vivian Le A THESIS submitted to Oregon State University Honors College in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Accounting and Business Information Systems (Honors Scholar) Presented May 29, 2020 Commencement June 2020 AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Vivian Le for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Accounting and Business Information Systems presented on May 29, 2020. Title: Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres. Abstract approved:_____________________________________________________ Ryann Reynolds-McIlnay The rise of digital streaming has largely impacted the way the average listener consumes music. Consequentially, while the role of album art has evolved to meet the changes in music technology, it is hard to measure the effect of digital streaming on modern album art. This research seeks to determine whether or not graphic design still plays a role in marketing information about the music, such as its genre, to the consumer. It does so through two studies: 1. A computer visual analysis that measures color dominance of an image, and 2. A mixed-design lab experiment with volunteer participants who attempt to assess the genre of a given album. Findings from the first study show that color scheme models created from album samples cannot be used to predict the genre of an album. Further findings from the second theory show that consumers pay a significant amount of attention to album covers, enough to be able to correctly assess the genre of an album most of the time.
