The Strokes boxing clever In this Issue: e Ministry of Sound, Singapore e Virtually Frank Sinatra e Kanye West & Chris Rea e Icebar & Living Room W1 Issue 13 March 2006 The Martin Experience www.martin-audio.com right at the cutting EDGE THE EDGE An earlier than usual edition of The Edge this spring sees us publishing our biggest-ever issue in time for the NSCA Exhibition in Las Vegas. It’s a win-win situation as this then enables us to reach visitors at the hugely influential Pro Light+Sound Frankfurt at the end of the month, with arguably the most important edition of The Edge we have yet published. Rich in coverage from North America, we are also proud to bring you some groundbreaking stories from around the world. In the hierarchy of pro audio installs little causes as much excitement as projects undertaken by Steve Dash (Integral Sound) and Austen Derek (Aurateq) — particularly to any of us old enough and fortunate enough to have experienced the original Richard Long sound system at Paradise Garage nearly 30 years ago. Therefore your first port of call should be to page 6 where the new 3,360-capacity Ministry of Sound in Singapore is awash with Martin Audio components specified by these master technicians. On the domestic front we have been kept busy covering The Strokes (with Capital Sound), Chris Rea (with RG Jones) and the new ‘Virtual’ Frank Sinatra season (with Autograph Sound) who have used our equipment as their main PA arrays at the London Palladium. Working from reclaimed archives, the show has presented a major restoration and time-coding challenge as the Sinatra voice is ‘synced’ to a live 24-piece orchestra and 35mm footage appears on nine different moving projection displays.

  • Vicente Amigo
Vicente Amigo Tierra Different. Global. Surprising. That's how you can describe Vicente Amigo's new album Tierra, the most innovative and international of his career which will be released in February 2013. The great Flamenco guitar player has opened his music's window to the fresh air of the British producer Guy Fletcher and recorded in London with musicians from Dire Straits, Mark Knopfler and Capercaillie, in order to offer an exceptional and brave album in which Flamenco music blends naturally with other music styles, opening new paths without losing depth, holding tightly to the inspirational Southern Spanish sounds but wrapped in Celtic melodies, linking light and mist, hovering over different styles to create something completely new. “I met Guy in Córdoba last year, at a Mark Knopfler show during the Guitar Festival”, says Vicente Amigo. “We were introduced by the show's promoters, and the initial idea of playing a song with them developed into a new main objective: I wanted to fuse with all those great musicians. My proposal was to embrace all our freedoms: mine, his as a producer, and the musicians' who collaborated. That is far more important, at a certain point, than music itself”. The album Tierra has been produced by Guy Fletcher (Kent, 1960), who was Dire Straits' keyboard player and Mark Knopfler's inseparable collaborator. As a musician he has also worked with Roxy Music, Mick Jagger, Nothing Hillbillies, Randy Newman, Tina Turner, Willie De Ville, Brian Ferry, Aztec Camera ... An emblematic British musician who has placed Vicente Amigo's guitar in a new dimension of lyricism, dream-state, rhythmic beats, tone variety, brightness … An artistic connection going beyond different types of music, styles, languages.

  • On the Beach: Chris Rea
1 SONGS: NIVEL INTERMEDIO: ON THE BEACH: CHRIS REA ESCUELA CENTRO DE AUTOAPRENDIZAJE OFICIAL IDIOMA: INGLÉS DE PRÁCTICA: COMPRENSIÓN ORAL IDIOMAS NIVEL: NIVEL INTERMEDIO OVIEDO MATERIAL: CINTA-CD / CUESTIONARIO / SOLUCIONES TEMA: LENGUAJE DESCRIPTIVO Chris Rea Virtuosity on the guitar and an unmistakable smoky-soft voice have paved the way to world-wide success for Chris Rea. With economical gestures and few words, the artist convinces audiences, beyond the mainstream and fashionable trends, with his blues- influenced, very personal style. The exceptional career of Chris Rea goes back to the mid-seventies and meanwhile encompasses 18 albums which found more than 10 million buyers - not including the numerous single hits. His special live-play quality is acknowledged by the media "as a great moment of blues-rock" - "the singer and the guitarist commune with each other". Though he sometimes appears awkward on stage, he masters his instrument and voice to perfection. Chris Rea certainly sets no big talk or effects on show, but he loves the stage because he can sense the audience's response to his songs there. Guitar, voice and personality merge into a unique experience communicated by music. Chris Rea derives his strength and inspiration from his private life. The son of an Italian and an Irish woman, his favourite enjoyments are homey: he likes nothing better than to cook Italian style and appreciates a fresh draught beer. His passion for motor racing and Ferrari show a surprising side of his complex personality. In the music of Chris Rea, romantic rock, instrumental finesse and the artistic maturity of a musician who has learned to distinguish between superficial fame and lasting impression flow together.

Blue Guitars is a Blues album released by Chris Rea on October 14, 2005 consisting of eleven CDs, one DVD and a full colour book, including paintings by the artist, liner notes and song lyrics. The album is an ambitious project with the 137 songs recorded over the course of 1½ years with a work schedule - according to Chris Rea himself - of twelve hours a day, seven days a week. Initially the project was inspired by Bill Wyman's "Blues Odyssey" and can be called an "odyssey" in its own right, for depicting a journey through the various epochs of Blues Music, starting at its African origins and finishing with modern-time Blues from the 60s and 70s.

  • Adele with Just a Couple of Cursory Listens to the Few Tracks That Popped
19 – Adele With just a couple of cursory listens to the few tracks that popped up all over the Internet through 2007, comparisons were made between Adele, the much-hyped brassy British songstress, and Amy Winehouse, the...much-hyped brassy British songstress. However, after a solid listen to 19, the first full sampling by the up-and-coming Adele, listeners are forced to throw all comparisons to the wind; Adele is simply too magical to compare her to anyone. Bluesy like it's no one's business yet voluptuously funky in a contemporary way, Adele rocks out 19 with a unique voice and gritty sound that dazzle endlessly. Synthesizing blues, jazz, folk, soul, and even electric pop, Adele mystifies through her mature songwriting skills and jaw-dropping arrangements. As the album opens with "Daydreamer," Adele's illusionary instrument -- over minimal sounds -- engulfs the listener with a gorgeous feeling of awe and wonderment. On "Melt My Heart to Stone" and the bona fide hit "Chasing Pavements," Adele allows herself to soar over the strings and power her way through these incredible songs. The upbeat "Right as Rain" is just wonderful, with clear Ashford & Simpson influences speckled all over it in an upbeat set. Nearly all the tracks seem to have been nurtured to glory over months as labors of love. What's simply awesome on 19 is its capability to capture the listener through mere teasing; Adele doesn't shout for attention, and doesn't rely on anyone but herself to prove she's worth it, in the same vein as Sara Bareilles, another heavily praised artist of 2007.
