Live Among the White Trash: a History of Nono----Manman on Stage
Live Among the White Trash: A history of nono----manman on stage “There are no No-Man concerts scheduled for the foreseeable future.” (from the official no-man website) Anyone who has followed no-man’s career over the previous ten years or so will be acutely aware that the band does not play live. If no-man “exist” as a band at all – and their infrequent releases mean they are more an ongoing understanding between two men rather than an active unit – it is only in the studio. Over a series of uncompromising albums no-man’s music has become ever more complex, yet ironically, “live sounding” than the release which proceeded it. But this organic “liveness” is mainly an illusion; the feeling of spontaneity often the result of numerous edits and takes which only the precision of studio work can produce. Others have tried to perform equally difficult music live: Radiohead ambitiously thrusting their clicks-and- cuts post-rock upon the world’s stadiums, for example. But for a variety of reasons, no-man simply haven’t tried – at least, not since 1994 and not until a one-off performance in 2006. The only comparable case is Talk Talk’s retreat into the studio in the late 1980s. Both bands have undoubtedly crafted their best work without going near an audience. 1 But it wasn’t always so. no-man were once very much a live act, promoting singles and albums with dates and undertaking two full-blown tours – though they rarely played outside London, never went further north than Newcastle, and never played outside Great Britain. -

A Study Investigating the Relaxation Effects of the Music Track Weightless by Marconi Union in Consultation with Lyz Cooper
A Study Investigating the Relaxation Effects of the Music Track Weightless by Marconi Union in consultation with Lyz Cooper RADOX SPA/MISCHIEF PR OBJECTIVE The aim of the study is twofold. Firstly to validate the claim that the new track ‘Weightless’ by Marconi Union (commissioned by Radox Spa) is more relaxing than other music tracks that are considered relaxing and secondly to compare the relaxation effects of a massage with the Radox Spa track. INTRODUCTION BY DR DAVID LEWIS - AUTHER OF ONE MINUTE STRESS MANAGER ‘Music has charms to sooth a savage breast,’ wrote the 17th century poet William Congreve, in his poem The Mourning Bride. This new study for Radox confirms the truth of his words. Certain pieces of music do indeed possess the power to calm even the most stressed out individuals by soothing frazzled minds and relaxing bodies. The study confirmed certain music has the capacity to lower heart rate, slow breathing and decrease levels of the stress hormone ‘cortisol’ in the blood. Other researchers have reported that music can also speed recovery from surgery and help overcome anxiety and depression. How can music exert such a powerful effect? Brain imaging studies have shown that music works at a very deep level within the brain, stimulating not only those regions responsible for processing sound but also ones associated with emotions. When listening to music we engage both the logical left and artistic right sides of our brain, which is why it can exert surprising and positive benefits, not only in combating daily stress but also in aiding such mentally challenging activities as memorising, learning a language, focusing attention and developing physical coordination. -

The Strokes boxing clever In this Issue: e Ministry of Sound, Singapore e Virtually Frank Sinatra e Kanye West & Chris Rea e Icebar & Living Room W1 Issue 13 March 2006 The Martin Experience www.martin-audio.com right at the cutting EDGE THE EDGE An earlier than usual edition of The Edge this spring sees us publishing our biggest-ever issue in time for the NSCA Exhibition in Las Vegas. It’s a win-win situation as this then enables us to reach visitors at the hugely influential Pro Light+Sound Frankfurt at the end of the month, with arguably the most important edition of The Edge we have yet published. Rich in coverage from North America, we are also proud to bring you some groundbreaking stories from around the world. In the hierarchy of pro audio installs little causes as much excitement as projects undertaken by Steve Dash (Integral Sound) and Austen Derek (Aurateq) — particularly to any of us old enough and fortunate enough to have experienced the original Richard Long sound system at Paradise Garage nearly 30 years ago. Therefore your first port of call should be to page 6 where the new 3,360-capacity Ministry of Sound in Singapore is awash with Martin Audio components specified by these master technicians. On the domestic front we have been kept busy covering The Strokes (with Capital Sound), Chris Rea (with RG Jones) and the new ‘Virtual’ Frank Sinatra season (with Autograph Sound) who have used our equipment as their main PA arrays at the London Palladium. Working from reclaimed archives, the show has presented a major restoration and time-coding challenge as the Sinatra voice is ‘synced’ to a live 24-piece orchestra and 35mm footage appears on nine different moving projection displays. -

Almost ten years after "Mr. Brightside" helped turn the Killers into new millennial rock sensations, the time has come for a hits collection. Calling the compilation Direct Hits -- a punning title that feels timeless but has rarely been used before, a nifty encapsulation of the group's style and attributes -- the Killers cannily use the singles-centric conceit to showcase the band at their overblown best, emphasizing their arena-sized neo-new wave just slightly over their Springsteenisms. -
