Heritage Corner: Native American Editor: Destiny Avriett Black Hawk was born in 1767, and died in 1838. He was a war leader and warrior of the Sauk American Indian tribe, which is now known as the Midwest of the U.S. Black Hawk earned his place as war leader, and warrior by his actions; leading raiding and war parties as a young man, and a band of Sauk warriors during the Black Hawk War of 1832. During the War of 1812, Black Hawk had fought on the side of the British against the U.S., hoping to push white American settlers away from the Sauk territory. Once 1832 came around, the Black Hawk War began as he led a group of members called the British Band, against European-American settlers in Illinois and present-day Wisconsin. Unfortunately, after the war, Black Hawk was captured by U.s. forces and taken to the eastern U.S. After being released from custody, Black Hawk told his story to an interpreter, and made a book; “Autobiography of Black Hawk, Embracing the Traditions of his Nation” in Cincinnati, Ohio. Later, he passed away at the age of 70~71, from illness. There is a marker for him, in the Iowaville Cemetery on the hill, over the river.
