All portraits in the 16-bit versions of Bard’s Tale II are new. The portrait names refer to their appearance in the 8-bit versions. • The “ Statue ” portrait was omitted from the PC version, and all monsters under that heading use the “ Earth Elemental ” portrait instead. A separate “ Statue ” portrait does exist in the Apple IIgs version, however. I do not know about other 16-bit versions. • In parentheses following the monster names are the dungeon levels where they are found. • Monsters with the same name have different statistics. As far as the game is concerned, they are different creatures. For example, the Archer under the “ Warrior ” portrait is encountered in the Wilderness, Fanskar’s Castle, and Maze of Dread 3. Using the “ Barbarian ” portrait, it is also found in Dark Domain 1. These four variants each have different HP, AC, etc . • Monsters in red are found in special encounters. The notation “join” indicates the monster joins the party, and the game never offers an opportunity to fight the creature, except in party combat. • Monsters in blue are summoned by spells. Listed after the name are levels with enemies capable of summoning these monsters. If the monster name is in italics, then the creature is an illusion. Note that the summoned Ogre has real and illusionary variants.

  • Heroes and Superheroes: from Myth to the American Comic Book
Heroes and superheroes: from myth to the American comic book Hougaard Winterbach Faculty of Arts, Tshwane University of Technology, Pretoria. E-mail: [email protected] This article demonstrates that the mythological hero who appears in myth, legend and folklore has resurfaced in the twentieth century as the American comic book superhero. First, the differences between the hero and the superhero are explained. Then the characteristics of the archaic hero are discussed to show its parallels with the modern superhero. The argument is based on Joseph Campbell’s formulation of the complex pattern in the stages of the adventure of the hero. An analysis of a superhero comic book, Daredevil: Born Again, serves to show how these different stages, as distinguished by Campbell, form the basis for both the archaic and the American comic book superhero. 'n Analise van 'n superheld strokiesprent (Daredevil: Born Again) toon hoe hierdie verskillende fases, soos deur Campbell onderskei, die basis vir sowel die argaïese held as vir die Amerikaanse strokiesprent vorm. he superhero1 has been a key character in the comic book, published largely in the United States of America, since 1938.

  • Warhammer Fantasy: Ogre Kingdoms by Valeria
Warhammer Fantasy: Ogre Kingdoms By Valeria Introduction Long ago, when the Old Ones were trying to create a race that could assist them in their fight against Chaos as the perfect soldiers, the Ogres were created. Strong, sturdy, resistant to Chaos and not too bright, they seemed the perfect warriors. But the Old Ones could not finish the project and were forced to leave the Ogres halfway done. The Ogres minded not, the simple race being happy to live out generations on the wide plains they came to be on, hunting her beasts and competing with each other. It was when the first Ogres discovered how delicious the flesh of a man was that things changed. The neighbouring country of Cathay, upon experiencing increasingly constant raids from the Ogres tribes of the time, gathered it’s wizards to bring down a catastrophe upon the Ogrish race. A bright light glowed in the sky after they cast their spell, a meteor speeding towards the planet from afar. It crashed into the Ogre homeland and wiped out most of them, forcing what remained out with the terrible winds and destruction it wrought even after it landed. This was no mere meteor. It was a living organism. After it crashed, it tunnelled deep within the earth and formed a link with the Ogres it had destroyed. After the event, every single Ogre could not eat to satiation. No matter how much they ate, there was a constant hunger within them. This was the Great Maw, what would eventually become the God of the Ogre race when a single Ogre would go to see their original homeland and find nothing but a massive, gaping mouth filled with teeth and muscle.

INFORMATION TO USERS While the most advanced technology has been used to photograph and reproduce this manuscript, the quality of the reproduction is heavily dependent upon the quality of the material submitted. For example: • Manuscript pages may have indistinct print. In such cases, the best available copy has been filmed. • Manuscripts may not always be complete. In such cases, a note will indicate that it is not possible to obtain missing pages. • Copyrighted material may have been removed from the manuscript. In such cases, a note will indicate the deletion. Oversize materials (e.g., maps, drawings, and charts) are photographed by sectioning the original, beginning at the upper left-hand comer and continuing from left to right in equal sections with small overlaps. Each oversize page is also filmed as one exposure and is available, for an additional charge, as a standard 35mm slide or as a 17”x 23” black and white photographic print.

  • Team Rosters
TEAM ROSTERS This section provides a handy reference for all twenty three of the current, official Blood Bowl teams. Note that future issues of Spike! Journal may update some of these rosters. Should a roster in Spike! Journal differ to a roster printed here, the Spike! Journal version will always take precedence. DESIGNER’S NOTE - TEAM TIERS Not all teams are created equal. Some are more challenging to play than others, either because the way their players and skills interact requires an in-depth knowledge of the game, or because background-wise they should struggle to win (after all, what chance would a Halfling team really have against a Dark Elf team?). This is entirely intentional, and over the years a great many experienced coaches have savoured the challenge of playing to win with the teams that might be considered part of the lower tier! If you’re after a challenge, try playing Goblins, Halflings or Ogres – they’re all incredibly entertaining to play, but if you don’t know what you’re doing then you might struggle to win games. This is based on starting teams, and is less accurate at higher Team Values. AMAZON BLOOD BOWL TEAMS The Amazons of Lustria are an enigma and several contradictory stories of their origins exist. One tells that long ago, driven by a desire for adventure, a group of Norse Valkyries set sail for distant shores. After a journey worthy of a saga in its own right, they founded a colony deep within the basin of a great river that wound its way through a massive rainforest.
