October 29, 2019 Stef Chura Shares Cover of Silver Jews October 29, 2019 For Immediate Release STEF CHURA SHARES COVER OF SILVER JEWS' "HOW TO RENT A ROOM" NEW ALBUM MIDNIGHT OUT NOW ON SADDLE CREEK (photo credit: Danielle Dabney) Currently in the midst of a debut European tour and with UK dates starting this weekend, Detroit's Stef Chura returns today with a yearning cover of Silver Jews' "How To Rent a Room" in tribute to the much- missed David Berman who passed away earlier this year. A portion of proceeds from the cover will go to MusiCares, a charity providing financial, health and rehabilitation resources to music people in times of need. While Chura has previously performed "How To Rent a Room" solo in live sets, this version of The Natural Bridge opener came together shortly after Berman's passing this summer. "'How To Rent a Room' has always been one of those songs that I could never let go of," explains Chura. "Ever since the first time I heard it it’s always been one of my favorite songs and remains one that imprinted me as a young songwriter. Now, in light of his death, the lyrics take on a new and much sadder meaning. At the time they seemed conceptual, but the line 'Now there’s a lot of things that I’m gonna miss, like the thunder down country and the way water drips' is now a haunting and deeply poetic rendering of everyday minutiae and the texture of our lives that we don’t appreciate on a daily basis. The song seems nostalgic for a life he was currently living, and how important it can feel to mean something to someone. Or at least that's my interpretation."     apexart WORKS OF ART IN THE SHOW Lots of Things Like This curated by Dave Eggers, April 2 to May 10, 2008 BRIEF ORIGIN AND EXPLANATION OF THIS SHOW: Apexart asked Dave to do a show, and Dave thought of this particular kind of art, which combines image, text, and humor. He thought first of the work of David Shrigley, Raymond Pettibon, Maira Kalman and Tucker Nichols. Then Dave called Jesse Nathan, who had interned at McSweeney’s and who knew art and poetry well. So then Nathan started working with Dave to find and compile a group of artworks that met for our particular requirements. For instance, we weren’t looking for art that used text obliquely or as a design element; the text had to be narrative and had to refer in some way to the image. In some cases the text was a comment on the image made after the fact. Sometimes the two were conceived together. Some work approaches single- panel-cartoonhood; some is closer to fine-art text-art. In most cases, even when we knew an artist, like Pettibon, had work that fit the bill, we also had to rule out a lot of stuff that didn’t. So it was an interesting process, and very rewarding, for we found so many great people, from so many disciplines, who shared this desire to draw and write together and were unafraid to make it funny, too. Will Toledo, the main brain behind Car Seat Headrest, is glad that it’s not 2013 anymore. A few years ago, the bedroom-pop luminary was in a “purgatorial” state as he prepared to graduate from Virginia’s College of William & Mary, where many of his friends from the class ahead had left to figure out post-college life. Toledo, a Virginia native, was afraid that he wouldn’t. “I knew there wasn’t an office job I wanted to jump into or anything, or a career, other than music,” the 23-year-old tells SPIN over the phone from his current home of Seattle. “That’s hard to prepare for when you’re graduating college.” It was during this liminal period when Toledo wrote the bulk of his forthcoming record, Teens of Denial , which arrives May 20 via Matador and follows last year’s similarly named compilation record, Teens of Style . Before his signing with the New York- and London-based label, though, Toledo had been writing a series of melancholic, self-deprecating songs as Car Seat Headrest ever since his transition from high school to college in 2010. Over time, they amounted to 11 albums on Bandcamp. Ironically, while writing what would become his first label-released full-length, Toledo was dissatisfied with his progress. “[Writing Teens of Denial ] was actually one of the longest processes I’ve had of writing an album,” he says.
