  • The Futurism of Hip Hop: Space, Electro and Science Fiction in Rap
Open Cultural Studies 2018; 2: 122–135 Research Article Adam de Paor-Evans* The Futurism of Hip Hop: Space, Electro and Science Fiction in Rap https://doi.org/10.1515/culture-2018-0012 Received January 27, 2018; accepted June 2, 2018 Abstract: In the early 1980s, an important facet of hip hop culture developed a style of music known as electro-rap, much of which carries narratives linked to science fiction, fantasy and references to arcade games and comic books. The aim of this article is to build a critical inquiry into the cultural and socio- political presence of these ideas as drivers for the productions of electro-rap, and subsequently through artists from Newcleus to Strange U seeks to interrogate the value of science fiction from the 1980s to the 2000s, evaluating the validity of science fiction’s place in the future of hip hop. Theoretically underpinned by the emerging theories associated with Afrofuturism and Paul Virilio’s dromosphere and picnolepsy concepts, the article reconsiders time and spatial context as a palimpsest whereby the saturation of digitalisation becomes both accelerator and obstacle and proposes a thirdspace-dromology. In conclusion, the article repositions contemporary hip hop and unearths the realities of science fiction and closes by offering specific directions for both the future within and the future of hip hop culture and its potential impact on future society. Keywords: dromosphere, dromology, Afrofuturism, electro-rap, thirdspace, fantasy, Newcleus, Strange U Introduction During the mid-1970s, the language of New York City’s pioneering hip hop practitioners brought them fame amongst their peers, yet the methods of its musical production brought heavy criticism from established musicians.

  • Beatles Cover Albums During the Beatle Period
Beatles Cover Albums during the Beatle Period As a companion to the Hollyridge Strings page, this page proposes to be a listing of (and commentary on) certain albums that were released in the United States between 1964 and April 1970. Every album in this listing has a title that indicates Beatles-related content and/or a cover that is a parody of a Beatles cover. In addition, the content of every album listed here is at least 50% Beatles-related (or, in the case of albums from 1964, "British"). Albums that are not included here include, for example, records named after a single Beatles song but which contain only a few Beatles songs: for example, Hey Jude, Hey Bing!, by Bing Crosby. 1964: Nineteen-sixty-four saw the first wave of Beatles cover albums. The earliest of these were released before the release of "Can't Buy Me Love." They tended to be quickly-recorded records designed to capitalize rapidly on the group's expanding success. Therefore, most of these albums are on small record labels, and the records themselves tended to be loaded with "filler." Possibly, the companies were not aware of the majority of Beatle product. Beattle Mash The Liverpool Kids Palace M-777 Side One Side Two 1. She Loves You 1. Thrill Me Baby 2. Why Don't You Set Me Free 2. I'm Lost Without You 3. Let Me Tell You 3. You Are the One 4. Take a Chance 4. Pea Jacket Hop 5. Swinging Papa 5. Japanese Beatles 6. Lookout for Charlie The label not only spells "Beatle" correctly but also lists the artist as "The Schoolboys." The liner notes show that this album was released before the Beatles' trip to America in February, 1964.

  • Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: an Analysis Into Graphic Design's
Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres by Vivian Le A THESIS submitted to Oregon State University Honors College in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Accounting and Business Information Systems (Honors Scholar) Presented May 29, 2020 Commencement June 2020 AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Vivian Le for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Accounting and Business Information Systems presented on May 29, 2020. Title: Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres. Abstract approved:_____________________________________________________ Ryann Reynolds-McIlnay The rise of digital streaming has largely impacted the way the average listener consumes music. Consequentially, while the role of album art has evolved to meet the changes in music technology, it is hard to measure the effect of digital streaming on modern album art. This research seeks to determine whether or not graphic design still plays a role in marketing information about the music, such as its genre, to the consumer. It does so through two studies: 1. A computer visual analysis that measures color dominance of an image, and 2. A mixed-design lab experiment with volunteer participants who attempt to assess the genre of a given album. Findings from the first study show that color scheme models created from album samples cannot be used to predict the genre of an album. Further findings from the second theory show that consumers pay a significant amount of attention to album covers, enough to be able to correctly assess the genre of an album most of the time.

  • Designing for the Ears As Well As for the Eyes
Inspicio architecture 26 Sushi & Tapas restaurant, Surfside, Florida, 2015. Photo: WSDG Designing for the Ears as Well as for the Eyes By Howard Sherman orris J. Kaplan is a very hands-on businessman. A successful real estate developer and innovative res- M taurateur/entrepreneur, his career track is marked by imaginative ventures. Last year, Kaplan and his wife Sandra began laying the groundwork for a new Miami-area restaurant. A longtime fan of master chef Fernando Chang’s culinary tal- ents, Kaplan was confident there would be a strong demand for Chef Chang’s specialty—Kosher sushi and Peruvian dishes. Kaplan invested considerable time collaborating on the bill of fare and the interior design of his new restaurant. In addition to the menu, one of his primary concerns was acoustics. An avid “foodie,” Kaplan had long avoided dining in restaurants with noise levels so high they intruded on his guests’ ability to enjoy a simple conversation along with their meal. Kaplan made a promise to himself. Diners at his new restaurant would be able to discuss their food (and other topics) without having to shout at the top of their lungs. Coincidentally, as he formulated his plans for what was to be- come “26 Sushi & Tapas” in Surfside, Florida, Kaplan was also involved in building two new Miami area synagogues. During the course of a series of visits to those construction sites, he became aware of an unusually quiet ambience. Building sites are typically noisy environments and neither of these work sites would ever be mistaken for a library, but Kaplan discovered a sound clarity that was unusual enough to spark an investiga- tion.

  • 21St September 2018 Submission to the House Standing Committee on Communications and the Arts Inquiry Into Factors Contributing
21st September 2018 Submission to the House Standing Committee on Communications and The Arts Inquiry into factors contributing to the growth and sustainability of the Australian Music Industry https://www.aph.gov.au/Parliamentary_Business/Committees/House/Communications/ Australianmusicindustry INTRODUCTION Thank you for considering this submission, which is in collaboration with the Australian Association of Musicians (AM). My name is Andrew Barnum, as a PhD candidate at UTS in the Faculty of Arts and Social Science, my study is investigating the cultural contexts of Identity, Artifact and Change through the lens of Australian Song in the age of digital music. To date I’ve interviewed thirty-five Australian songwriters (genders and music genres) to understand the conditions in which their practice exists in Australia. In consideration of the terms of reference stated for this inquiry, it’s important to start with some unifying statements as drivers of purpose for this submission. WHAT ARE OUR COMMON BELIEFS AS AUSTRALIANS? As a community of Australian artists and citizens, we are informed by the belief that our nation should strive to be a productive nation - empathic, respectful, imaginative, industrious, adaptive, open and successful. (Creative Australia 2013) In this submission we are considering the reasons why our Association should support these beliefs as central to our strategy to re-invigorate The Australian music Industry, which is both a cultural and commercial Australian enterprise, locally and globally. This submission considers the factors that will grow and sustain our uniquely Australian Music Industry, as a proud Cultural and Creative Industry, and in doing so, confirm our sense of self as Australian musical entrepreneurs, our desire to feel we belong here in our birthplace as Australian artists, producers and copyright holders, and can sustain livelihood and opportunity at home, as productive members of the field of cultural production in Australia.
