XIX*^ Century Classics
XIX*^ Century Classics EDITED BY CLEMENT K. SHORTER ALARIC AT ROME AND OTHER POEMS /K^U^yC^ iL^^^. f ' , ' ALARIC AT ROME AND OTHER POEMS BY MATTHEW ARNOLD IVITH AN INTRODUCTION BY RICHARD GARNETT, C.B., LL.D LONDON: WARD, LOCK ^ BOWDEN, LTD- NEW YORK AND MELBOURNE. MDCCCXCVI CHISWICK PRESS :—CHARLES WHITTINGHAM AND CO. TOOKS COURT, CHANCERY LANE, LONDON. EDITORIAL NOTE. THE PRESENT VOLUME IS COMPOSED OF THE CONTENTS OF MR. MATTHEW ARNOLD'S FIRST FOUR VOLUMES, "ALARIC," "CROMWELL," "THE STRAYED REVELLER," AND " EMPEDOCLES ON ETNA," AND THAT PORTION OF THE FIFTH WHICH HAD NOT PREVIOUSLY APPEARED IN THE EARLIER VOLUMES. TO THESE HAS BEEN ADDED THE SONNET "TO THE HUNGARIAN NATION," WHICH FIRST APPEARED IN THE "EXAMINER" FOR 1849, AND HAS NEVER HITHERTO BEEN REPRINTED. THE ORIGINAL ARRANGEMENT OF THE POEMS IN EACH VOLUME HAS BEEN OBSERVED. INTRODUCTION. HE incontestable importance of Matthew Arnold's T place in English poetical literature arises not merely from the beauty of much of his poetry, but from his peculiar distinction as one of the few eminent English poets who are enrolled among the legislators of their art, not more by the indirect influence of their metrical compositions, than by the authority univers ally accorded to their critical utterances. Coleridge, the most penetrating critic Britain ever possessed, is too casual and desultory to rank among legislators, and the two poets who admit of most profitable comparison with Arnold in this respect are Dryden and Wordsworth. Each of the three had definite con victions on the subject of poetry which he exemplified in his own practice; and each, along with error and exaggerated truth, contributed elements to the forma tion of a poetical ideal which can never be ignored. -

Rainy Day Jesus .. - I know a man with fire, His eyes; perseverance, His beaten brow; truth, His jaw; strength, His tired back; suffering, His shoulders; mercy, His hands; and grace, His feet. - I met Him one rainy day; He was walking across puddles, his steps making not even a .. ripple or a splash in the shallow pools of water. He looked wet and weary, so I offered my umbrella to which He kindly responded, "Oh, no thank you," and continued walking, - looking up at the grays of sky and down at the greens, reds, and yellows of autumn leaves - thrown about the earth in perfect geometry to the soul. -
Official Middle Kingdom Songbook" Is a Publication Ol the Middle Kingdom of the Society for Creative Anachronism, Inc
Unto the Populace of the Known World come greetings from Siobhan Medhbh O'Roarke, Chronicler of the Middle in the first reign of their Majesties Eliahu and Elen. The book you now hold in your hands is, I must confess, a mystery to me. It was handed to me, wrapped in a plain brown wrapper, by a mysterious figure in purple. Opening said package, I discovered a manuscript, much travel- and tear-stained. The dedicatory page purported to have left the hands of Countess Valmai many years before, but when I contacted that noble lady, she denied any knowledge of it and vehemently refused to accept any e!a!Tle credit for such a manuscript.* Despite the mysterious origins of the book, it seemed to me to be of value. Not many days before, the Neos in my home barony had been complaining that "No-one ever sings the old songs any more. How can we learn them?" Thus, the discovery of the mysterious parcel seemed Provident, if not serendipitious. It was a book Whose Time Had Come. I set about getting it published. Master Reginald of the Horns, seeing my bewilderment, surrounded by pages of music tossed about in a random manner, graciously offered to rewrite the musical scores in a consistent and pleasing manner. I owe a great debt to him for this labor, for I am confident that the Book would not have appeared in print until Pennsic XX or even later had the task of transcribing the music been left to me. Thanks are also due to Mistress Greya Ankayrlyn, who took pity on the poor naked manuscript and created a cover for it. -

Copybook of the Great Master
© COPYRIGHT by Arturo Ruiz Ortega 2012 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED DEDICATION To Leonor Bustamante, Leonor Calderón and Marco Antonio Bustamante, who somehow believed in me when nobody else did. THE COPYBOOK OF THE GREAT MASTER BY ARTURO RUIZ ORTEGA ABSTRACT During Pinochet’s Dictatorship in Chile, Osvaldo sneaks into a The Astrum Aureum Society, a secret group of adepts of the occult. As he learns the magic secrets, he begins to question the alleged wisdom, and also realizes that the immense network of the society is its real super power. Osvaldo is forced to keep the charade until he makes it to become the Great Master of the whole organization. However, when he achieves the ultimate leadership of the society, he is already completely skeptical about the secret arcana, and convinced of the iniquity of the Astrum Aureum Society. Therefore he writes a memoir on a copybook: the copybook of the Great Master. ii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS To Elise Levine, Andrew Holleran, David Keplinger, Roberto Brodsky, Stephanie Grant, Kyle Dargan, Rachel Snyder, Despina Kakoudaki, Linda Voris (special mention for her patience), Jeffrey Middents, Michael Wenthe, for being my guidance in reading and writing in the English Language. National Board of Directors It is my honor and privilege to applaud the achievements of the recipients of the 2015 Congressional Award Gold Medal. These outstanding 269 young Americans have challenged themselves and made lasting contributions to local communities across this great nation. The Gold Medal Ceremony is the culmination of a long journey for our awardees. For each participant the journey was unique, but one that likely included many highs points and challenges. The Congressional Award program was designed to instill a wide range of life skills and attributes that are necessary to navigate and overcome obstacles on the path to success - both in the classroom and beyond. And now that each young person has met these challenges and attained their goals, we hope they will continue to amaze and inspire us by pursuing their passions, utilizing their talents, and demonstrating an unwavering commitment to making the world a better place. On behalf of the Board of Directors, we would like to extend our great appreciation to our partner organizations and sponsors for their continued support. -
