Attractions The hill station of Yelagiri in Tamil Nadu is a cluster of 14 villages spread across 29 square kilometers, located 3,460 feet above sea level. The drive to the hills through 14 hairpin bends opens up to beautiful mountain landscapes; at every twist and turn, the city seems to fade away a little more. The first thing that hits you on arrival at Yelagiri is the lack of noise pollution. The beautiful rustic surroundings are extraordinarily quiet. The smell of mango and jackfruit plantations is diluted by the subtle fragrances of fresh foliage. You suddenly realize how close you are to nature. Punganoor Lake & Park – The lake at the centre of Yelagiri offers rides on pedal and manned rowing boats. The lake is surrounded by a beautiful garden, with a children's park & play area. A good place to spend your first day in Yelagiri. Nature Park – "The Nature Park" is a 10-acre garden well maintained with beautiful landscaping for a pleasant experience. The park is a rainbow of stunning flowers during the peak season. Other attractions in the park are an aquarium, an artificial waterfall, a musical fountain, etc., Swamimalai – At 4,338 feet, this is the highest point and popular trekking area. Most visitors to Yelagiri Hills, who have trekking in mind, often climb up Swamimalai. It is an easy trek along a muddy path starting from the lake, which is about 3 km long and pretty scenic too. The Swamimalai temple on top offers beautiful views of the countryside. Herbal Farm – Near Punganoor lake a Herbal Farm is being maintained by the forest department, where rare herbs with medicinal values are grown for Ayurvedic and Siddha medicines. Velavan (Murugan) temple – Dedicated to Lord Murugan, the Velavan temple is again on a hill top and offers splendid views of the landscape below. Every year during the month of July the people living in Yelagiri Hills celebrate the Velavan temple festival, which is a special attraction for tourist visiting during that period. Observatory – Kavalur: The second biggest solar observatory in south Asia is situated in Kavalur, 65 km from Yelagiri. You need permission to visit the observatory. Jalagamparai Falls – The River Attaaru runs through the valleys of Yelagiri Hills, and flows over at the village of Jadaiyanoor to form the waterfall. It's a great spot for a day-long picnic. The water at the falls largely depends on yelagiri's rainfall, hence enquire before heading off to the waterfall. 4a: Special attractions Hogenakkal – Hogenakkal Falls or Hogenakal Falls is a waterfall on the river Kaveri. It is located in the Dharmapuri district of Tamil Nadu, about 150 km from Yelagiri. It is sometimes referred to as the "Niagara of India". With its fame for medicinal baths and hide boat rides, it is a major site of tourist attraction. Carbonatite rocks in this site are considered to be the oldest of its kind in South Asia and one of the oldest in the world. A separate one day trip from yelagiri is worth visiting. The Golden Temple of 'Sripuram’ – This temple is a spiritual park situated at the foot of a small range of green hills in a place known as "Tirumalaikodi " in the city of Vellore about 70 km from Yelagiri . This was inaugurated on August 2007. The salient feature of Sripuram is the Lakshmi Narayani temple or Mahalakshmi temple with Gold covering located on 100 acres of land. A separate half a day trip from yelagiri is worth visiting. 5. Entertainment Most people at Yelagiri prefer to unwind through long walks along the mountainside or by hitting a trekking trail. However, if you wish to relax at the resort, you'll find the following In door games - Tt, carom, chess, darts. Children’s play area - swing, slide & sea saw. AYUTHAVEL KALAIMANI Aarohi, No.192,7th Block, Jayanagar, Bangalore 560011 Karnataka, India Email: [email protected] INTRODUCTION The Indian golden gecko Calodactylodes aureus (Beddome, 1870) is endemic to the Eastern Ghats mountain range of peninsular India (Bauer & Das, 2000; Kalaimani & Nath, 2012, 2013; Reddy et al., 2013; Srinivasalu et al.,2014). It prefers rocky areas with deep stream valleys and has been observed at elevations between 50 and 1000 m and reported to lay eggs in communal egg deposition sites (Bauer & Das, 2000; Javed et al., 2007) on rocky surfaces, mostly on vertical rocks in both natural and human-inhabited areas. This paper gives information on mass egg laying sites of C. aureus in Tirupattur Forest Division, Eastern Ghats, Tamil Nadu. METHODS Figure 1.
