The Statistical information available in this ‘Hand Book’ would be very useful for the Planners, Policy makers, Line Departments, Research Scholars etc. to assess the development in various sectors. This Hand Book consists of three parts as detailed below: Part-I : Salient Features of Tiruvallur District. Part-II : District Profile 2019-20 Part-III : Statistical Tables containing information on various sectors. The Co-operation extended by various Central and State Government Departments and Public Sector Undertakings by providing the required data for compilation of this book is gratefully acknowledged. The Block Statistical Inspectors of this office are duly appreciated for having evinced keen interest in collecting data and preparation of this booklet and releasing the book in time. PART-I SAILENT FEATURES Thiruvallur district came into being with effect from 1.1.1997. It is having a great historical background as it was hitherto a part of the erstwhile Chengalpattu district. The Sector- wise information about this district for the latest year available 2019-20 are provided below for the reference of the users. 1. PHYSICAL FEATURES: This coastal district lies between 12 10’ and 13 15’ Northern Latitude and between 79 15' and 80 20' Eastern Longitude and spread over an area of 3424 Sq.Km. Surrounded by Kancheepuram district in the South, Vellore district in the West, Chennai in the East and Andhra Pradesh State in the North. The district comprises of with 825 Villages, which form 12 Taluks belonging to 4 Revenue Divisions. The Villages are grouped into 14 Development Blocks for the purpose of Rural Development. The Urban population is governed by 5 Municipalities and 10 Town Panchayats. 2. POPULATION: The population of this district is 3728104 persons with 50.32% of Males and 49.68% of Females. The literacy rate is 84.03% as per 2011 Census. In respect of Category of Workers, 31% of the populations are Main Workers. Out of the total Main Workers, Cultivators and Agricultural Labourers shared a percentage of 10% and 29% respectively as per 2011 Census. 3. AGRICULTURE: The major occupation of this district is Agriculture. 45% of the total Main Workers are engaged in Agriculture. Out of the total geographical area of the district, 43% area was brought under cultivation during the current year. The major crops raised in this district are Paddy, Pulses, Sugarcane and Groundnut. There are no perennial rivers flowing in this district. However, the existence of considerable number of tanks in this district are meeting the irrigational needs of the crops cultivated. 4. RAIN FALL: The South-West Monsoon and North -East Monsoon usually bring rain to this district. The total rainfall recorded during the year was 1192.0 mm, which is compared to Normal Rainfall of 1382.9 mm in the district. While analyzing the Rainfall for a period of current year Highest Rainfall of 2081.7m.m was recorded during the year 2015-16 and the lowest Rainfall of 764.09mm was recorded during the year 2016-2017. 5. ANIMAL HUSBANDRY: The 2007 Livestock Census revealed that there are 2,37,868 Cattle in this district. The other Livestock population is 3,27,945 The Government has established 5 Veterinary Hospitals, 87 Veterinary Dispensaries, 25 Sub-centres and 1 mobile unit in the district. 6. EDUCATION: By virtue of its proximity to the Chennai City, a remarkable number of educational institutions are functioning in this district. Many professional institutions particularly the “Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University” at Madhavaram add honour to this district in the field of education. There are 6 Deemed Universities, 43 Engineering Colleges, 19 Polytechnics and 2536 Schools for General education. There are 150 Libraries in the district. 7. HEALTH AND FAMILY WELFARE: 12 Government Hospitals, 58 Primary Health Centers and 265 Health Sub-Centers are providing health care to the people of this district. Separate wings for Indian Medicines like Siddha and Homeopathy are also functioning in the Government Hospitals. During the year 37,22,520 outpatients and 2,84,928 in-patients were treated in the above health institutions. The Live Birth Rate is 12.4 , Infant Mortality Rate is 10.1 8. FACTORIES: There are 1907 Registered Factories in this district, which provide employment to 69536 workers. Many reputed firms like, MRL, MRF, Ashok Leyland, TVS Groups, etc., are functioning in this district. 9. EMPLOYMENT: 54051 persons have registered in the Employment Exchanges during the current year and the persons still at the live register for want of employment were 261164 at the close of the current year. 10. LEGAL SERVICES: There are 40 courts in the district which have disposed 24095 cases during the year and still have 46832 cases are pending in these courts. In this district 2762 advocates are practicing in the courts. 11. MOTOR VEHICLES: There are 57579 vehicles registered under Commercial category and 16,38,863 of vehicles registered under Non-Commercial category upto the end of the current year. The number of Driving Licenses issued for the various categories of vehicle users were 24,919 during the year. 12. POLICE AND PRISONS: There are 34 Police stations, 5 Women Police Station,5 Traffic Police Station, 1 out-posts and 3 Sub-Jails in the Tiruvallur district. The total cognizable crimes under IPC were 42203 during the year 2019-20. The total number of road accidents during the year was 1626 of which 1846 were injured and 293 persons killed. The biggest prison complex at Puzhal consisting of 3 prisons was opened on 26.11.2006. 13. SOCIAL WELFARE: The Number of beneficiaries under “Puratchi Thalaivar MGR Nutritious Meals Programme” are 93967 for school sector and ICDS sector respectively and under Old Age Pension Scheme, the number of beneficiaries were 1,57,178 apart from other social welfare measures. 14. RESEARCH SERVICE: There are 5 Research Centres functioning in the district for doing research works under Paddy / Rice, Seeds, Coconut Plants, Seed Processing, Soil testing and Medical services. The new varieties of paddy are being named as “TKM” series denoting Tirurkuppam where the Rice Research institutes are functioning. 15. RAILWAYS: Many places in this district are having the facility of Railway Routes and there are 120 Kms of Route Length and 321 Kms of Track Length laid under Broad gauge. There is no Meter Gauge or Narrow Gauge Railway track available in this district. So far, 37 Railway Stations are instituted in this district. 16. SEA PORT: One Major Sea Port at Ennore has been built and opened for traffic during 2000-2001. Coal is the main cargo handled in the port for Ennore Thermal Plant. This reduces the transportation cost. 2295 vessels entered the port during the year and 46.76 Million Metric Tonnes in Chennai and 815 vessels entered the Ennore port during the year and 31.75 Million Metric Tonnes of cargo handled.
