Eye Dotting of the Dragon Boats Saturday, April 1 The Eye Dotting Ceremony marks the start of the Dragon Boat racing season in Portland. Hundreds of Portlanders look forward to this day and the hours of practice, hard work and joy of Dragon Boat racing that lay ahead. Come and be a part of the Royal Rosarian Honor Guard for this event. Prime Minister Jim Stahl will be one of the featured dignitaries speaking and dotting the eye of one of the dragon boats. Experience the thrill of the beginning of the racing season and be part of the procession down to the boats, dot the eyes and see them paddle out for the first time. Be early to get a space 2017 New Member Knighting By Korrie Hoeckendorf Saturday, April 15 It is that special time again! The 2017 New Member Knighting will be held on Saturday, April 15, 2017, and we are back at the Sheraton Airport Hotel. Please join Prime Minister James Stahl and the Royal Rosarian Council, as they induct a brand new class of Sir Knights and Dames into the magical realm of Rosaria. The 2017 Class contains over a dozen energetic and motivated men and women. This year the class contains a mayor; a descendent of Henry Pittock; a Knit Bomber; and a Navy mom, just to mention a few interesting facts about this new class. We invite all Rosarians and their guests, to come and relive that special moment of their knighting. The ceremony is steeped in tradition and pageantry; you will not want to miss it. This year the class will be knighted by our 1989 Queen Deanna Connell-Rosebrook, who was from St. Mary's Academy. After the knighting ceremony, you will enjoy a wonderful dinner, and then dance to the music of the band "One Brick Shy". Chairs Sir Knight David Shipley and Honorary Dame Connie Shipley, along with their committee, are planning a beautiful and memorable evening you will not want to miss! Click here to register for 2017 New Member Knighting Blessing of the Festival Saturday, April 22 Every year the Royal Rosarians host the Blessing of the Festival to mark the beginning of the Rose Festival season. The event introduces the newly selected princesses and honors those members of the Royal Rosarians, Rose Festival Foundation, Rose Society and the Blueback Submarine Council who have passed away the previous year. Following the blessing there will be a Rose Planting ceremony and reception. The Blessing of the Festival will be from 11:00 am - 2:00 pm at St. John Fisher Church, 7007 SW 46th Avenue, Portland on Saturday, April 22. Click here for information and to register for the Blessing of the Festival. Washington Park Master Plan By Kimberly Bown Your Input Needed Portland's 41 acre "City Park" was acquired in 1871. Management strategies for today's 450 acre Washington Park are currently being formulated and you're asked to participate. Consider attending a Master Planning Open House on Saturday, April 8th, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm, hosted at the World Forestry Center's Cheatham Hall. Presentations on plan concepts will be offered at 10:30 am and 12:30 pm. The Master Plan will include a vision for the park for the next 25 years, as well as strategies for accommodating the unprecedented number of visitors and residents. The reduction of vehicle traffic throughout the park is a key strategy. Areas around the International Rose Test Garden will see dramatic changes. The final Master Plan will be issued by December 2017. If you are going to the Daffodil Festival you can participate by completing an online survey between April 7 - April 30th. Click here to access the online survey 2017 Royal Rosarian Golf Season By Mike Collins "Tour de Rosaria" Golf is in the air. Well, at least I think it will soon be in the air. Here is the schedule of dates and courses for our 2017 season. Everything is set for a great season and I am ready for signups even now. If you already know the dates you plan to play, or If you already know the dates you will be out of town, please let me know. Until May 9, hit them long and straight. May 9, 16: Rose City Golf Course May 23, 30: Langdon Farms Golf Course June 6, 13: Stone Creek Golf Course June 20, 27: Eastmoreland Golf Course July 11: Broadmoor Golf Course July 18, 25: Claremont Golf Course August 1: Heron Lakes Golf Course - Greenback August 8: Hit & Giggle Tournament, Heron Lakes -Greenback 1. All tee times start at 3:30 pm, except for Rose City Golf Course at 3:00 pm. 2. Please show up 30 minutes early to meet your foursome. 3. We play nine holes, followed by liquid refreshments and great fellowship. 4. We invite all Rosarians and guests who remotely like to play golf. 5. A good score is in the 40's. Rosarian Rotogravure On March 22, the Royal Rosarians honored eight local citizens who were nominated by the media of Portland for their newsworthy contributions to assist others. They ranged from a nine-year-old who helps the homeless to first responders' sacrifices in the line-of-duty to those who have established programs or advocated for equality and justice. For two decades she directed the McKenzie River Gathering Foundation advocating locally and nationally for racial and economic justice. Prime Minister Jim Stahl shown knighting Portland Fire Bureau Lt. Peter St. John. Lt. St. John saved many lives when he rushed to pull alarms at a NW Portland gas leak. Both of his legs were broken in the resultant explosion. Sergeant Eric Bunday is shown here being presented his certificate of knighthood by Lord High Chancellor Adam Baker. Sgt. Bunday helped organize the Oregon Fallen Badge Foundation to provide assistance to families and agencies that have experienced the tragedy of a line-of-duty death. Announcements For the Good of the Organization General Membership Meeting The next Royal Rosarian General Membership Meeting will be held on Thursday, March 30 at the DoubleTree Lloyd Center Hotel. The social hour begins at 5:30 pm with dinner at 6:30 pm. The Rose Festival season is sneaking up quickly and this is a great opportunity to get the latest information about upcoming out-of-town festivals, parades, rose plantings and related events of concern to Rosarians. The meal choices are a flat iron steak, pork loin or grilled polenta cakes. The uniform for the meeting is green jackets and black pants.
