FAQ Pharmacy/ PillPack

1. I saw in the news. Can I use Amazon for my prescriptions? Will it be covered under my benefit? Amazon/PillPack pharmacies do participate in network and are an option for the member to use, like any other retail pharmacy. Amazon Pharmacy is currently not available to residents of Hawaii, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana and Minnesota. PillPack is licensed nationwide, but does not currently deliver to Hawaii. Customers can also use flexible spending accounts or health savings accounts to buy prescriptions on the service.

2. If I choose to use Amazon for my prescriptions, how will it affect my copay or costs? Your copay is set as part of your benefit plan and does not change based on which pharmacy you choose to fill your prescription. However, the Amazon/PillPack pharmacy only offers a 30-day, retail prescription option. If you are receiving 90-day supplies from a different pharmacy and move your prescription to Amazon, your copay could change from a 90-day copay to a retail 30-day copay. Please check your benefit plan to decide if this is the right decision for you.

3. I want to transfer my prescription to Amazon Pharmacy. How do I do that? Doctors can send prescriptions directly to Amazon Pharmacy, or patients can request a transfer from an existing retail pharmacy.

Below are instructions taken from the Amazon Pharmacy website:

The choice of pharmacy is yours to make. If you believe Amazon/PillPack is the right pharmacy for you, then you are free to use this option. Note, however, that Amazon/PillPack only offer a 30-day, retail prescription. If you are on a maintenance medication, then a mail order pharmacy might be a better and more affordable option. Check your benefit plan to see if you there is a difference between your out-of- pocket/copay costs for mail versus retail prescriptions.

5. Can I order all of my prescriptions from Amazon Pharmacy? Amazon will not deliver Schedule II controlled medications, including most opioids. Amazon Pharmacy also does not deliver specialty medications, which include many high cost medications that treat complex conditions and may require special handing/administration. Additionally, note Amazon Pharmacy is currently not available to residents of Hawaii, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana and Minnesota.

PillPack offers a limited list of specialty medications. If you have any questions about which specialty medicines can and cannot be filled, please reach out to PillPack customer service at 855-494-4897 Monday through Friday, 8am to 10pm, ET, and Saturday through Sunday, 10am to 8pm, ET. PillPack is licensed nationwide, but does not currently deliver to Hawaii.

6. What is the difference between PillPack and Amazon Pharmacy? PillPack by Amazon Pharmacy is part of Amazon Pharmacy and remains a distinct service for customers managing multiple daily medications for chronic conditions. Customers who take multiple daily medications and prefer pre-sorted dose packaging should continue to choose PillPack.

7. What is prescription savings benefit? The Amazon Prime prescription savings benefit is a discount program, similar to InsideRx or GoodRx. You must be an Amazon Prime member to participate. This program is not recommended, because the program does not consider other medications you are on, and therefore does not provide safety checks that occur automatically when you fill a prescription at a pharmacy. It is a cash-pay offering, meaning it does not process through your health insurance. So, the amount you spend does not accumulate toward deductibles, etc. Medicare/Medicaid are NOT eligible to use the program.
