!! GOSPEL MEDITATION ! ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE May 20, 2018 Today we celebrate the "birthday of the Church!" Pentecost is described in the first reading from the Acts of the Apostles. But before the great driving wind and tongues of fire empowering the Disciples, the Holy Spirit had already arrived. The Gospel for today's Mass during the day is from John 20. Jesus appears to the fearful disciples after his resurrection. He first speaks a message of calm. "Peace be with you." The apostles "rejoiced when they saw the Lord." When the enthusiastic response settles down, Jesus "breathed on them and said to them 'Receive the Holy Spirit.'" ! This action is Trinitarian, and it has happened before. If you turn your Bible back to the beginning, you'll read: "The Lord God formed man out of the clay of the ground and blew into his nostrils the breath of life, and so many became a living being" (Genesis 2:7). In the Garden of Eden, we see God's first, original covenant with man. The breath of life signifies that original indwelling of grace, the special state of likeness and friendship with God before the Fall. Here now, in this locked room, the Apostles receive the long awaited promise: the very breath of God, new life, a new covenant. ! In the pairing of these two readings the Pentecost experience in Acts and the breath of Jesus in John's Gospel we see that the coming of the Holy Spirit is not only an empowering, it is an indwelling. We have each received the breath of grace in our . It is confirmed, strengthened, and deepened in each reception of the sacraments. If we persevere in virtue, the Spirit of God is alive in us, inspiring our actions of love. This Pentecost Sunday, how is the breath of God alive in you? ! LIVE THE LITURGY INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK ! ! "Lord, send out your Spirit and renew the face of the earth!" We only know that the wind exists because of what it does. A gentle breeze felt on our face or watching a tree swaying or swirling snowflakes all prove the existence of "something" causing these things to happen. But, apart from its effects, we cannot see the origin or substance of wind. The Holy Spirit is the wind of God. Watching an early Church emerge, people coming to believe, disciples of Jesus change the way they live and conduct their affairs all give witness to the presence of the Holy Spirit. Observing the courage and conviction of those who have found faith, working for justice, feeding the poor, seeing how wounds are healed all point to something greater than ourselves working and living among us. How do our lives give witness to the Holy Spirit? lpi !

JUST FYI !!

“In Italy it was customary to scatter rose petals from the ceiling of the churches to recall the miracle of the fiery tongues; hence in Sicily and elsewhere in Italy Whitsunday is called Pasqua rosatum . The Italian name Pasqua rossa comes from the red colors of the vestments used on Whitsunday. !

In France i t was customary to blow trumpets d uring Divine service, to recall the sound of the mighty wind which accompanied the Descent of the Holy Spirit. !

In the north west of , church and chapel parades called Whit Walks take place at Whitsun (sometimes on , the Friday after Whitsun). Typically, the parades contain brass bands and choirs; girls attending are dressed in white. Traditionally, Whit Fairs (sometimes called Whitsun Ales) [58] t ook place. Other customs such as morris danc- ing [59] and cheese rolling [ are also associated with Whitsun. "Whitsunday" has been the name of the day in the Church of England. (The only once uses the word "Pentecost" for the festival. Though some [ think that name derives from white clothes worn by newly baptized in Eastertide, it may well be seen as derived from "wit", hence "wisdom", the reference being to Holy Wisdom (Sancta Sophia, Hagia Sophia), re- ferred to in Proverbs and the Book of Wisdom, with which the Holy Spirit has often been identified.” Wikipedia ! ! Our St. Colette tradition is Birthday Cake after all the Masses. This is some- thing I began with the kids at Holy Name Nso it is a well grounded 30 year tradition! Fr. D!ear Parish Family, ! ! ! With Pentecost the Season is over but the Alleluias never stop! I want to thank you for making this past Easter Season so meaningful. I am so very grateful for the crowds we had on Holy Thursday, Good Friday and, of course, Easter. The faithful- ness of this parish is overwhelming and your devotion and dedication to the Church is enviable! I also need to say thank you again for the many Easter treats and breads and nut rolls etc. that you so generously offered to the priest who has now exceeded (in weight) most of his clothing! With the same gratitude we have exceeded our Catholic Charities Goal for 2018. The special collection offered today is also from Catholic Charities but it’s only goal and emphasis is on combating the Opioids Crisis that is plaguing our nation N our own parish and community has been affected by this scourge. Whatever kindness you can extend may truly benefit lives nearer than what we imagine. You may have noticed in the last bulletin that Bishop Perez will be cele- brating a Tuesday Night Mass on July 17th here at our Parish. This is an opportunity to meet him in person and welcome him to St. Colette’s. This is just an informal visit which we look for- ward to. Please try to join us! It was wonderful having the Orchestra join us for Ascension and for Pentecost! All that pomp adds to the splendor of the Solemnities and to the Glory of God! Thanks to all of Music Ministry! ALSO, a special Welcome to Father Ron Szudarek, a retired priest of our diocese, who will be assisting us with some of our daily Masses. We an- ticipate Fr. Coletta’s return as well! May your week be blessed Nbe filled with the Power from on High Nthe Advocate, the SPIRIT who enkindles our hearts! Remember those who are ill and those who have asked our prayers. NOTE: there is a Corbie’s Lunch for seniors coming JUNE 13th following the 11 a.m. Mass...join us for LUNCH! Fr. Krizner, The Lily and Gracie!

Question: "Why is the dove often used as a symbol for the Holy Spirit?" ! !
