Indicate whether the property has historic integrity.) ______________________________________________________________________________ Summary Paragraph The cluster of modern homes on Spring Pond Road, Pine Tree Road and a portion of Hopson Road form a neighborhood dominated by architect-designed Mid-Century Modern style houses of the 1950s through the early 1970s. The neighborhood historic district is defined by three subdivisions that created two new roads and over a dozen home lots. It is located on the outskirts of Norwich village, the commercial, residential, and municipal center of the town, on a rise about a mile west of Main Street. The area in which the historic district is located is rural/residential in character with single family houses on large lots. Many of the houses in the historic district were sited to take advantage of long views to the east of the small valley where the village center lies. Section 7 page 4 United States Department of the Interior National Park Service / National Register of Historic Places Registration Form NPS Form 10-900 OMB No. 1024-0018 Norwich Mid-Century Modern Historic District Windsor, VT Name of Property County and State In contrast to the traditional, older village center1 and other residential neighborhoods of Norwich, the homes of the Mid-Century Modern Historic District are distinctly different in style, massing and materials, using flat, shed or low sloped roofs, long lines of ribbon and picture windows, massive stone and brick elements to accent the many flat, plywood or flush board walls, one and two story distinct geometric blocks for massing, and rugged siting, using the hills to maximize the views from upper levels. Overall, the historic district has very good integrity of location, design, setting, feeling, and association and most buildings have a reasonable level of integrity of materials and workmanship. ____________________________________________________________________________ Narrative Description The houses located within the historic district feature a variety of both traditional and 20th century materials, including a great deal of glass, plywood, flush board, wide weatherboard, and paneled vertical board siding in redwood, cedar, mahogany or other non-native woods, brick and native stone, and membrane and asphalt roofs. The distinctive design features found throughout the district of the Mid-Century Modern and Wrightian styles include flat roofs (#s 2, 3, 8, 9, 11, 13 & 16), ship’s prow and long, low gable roof (#6); shed roofs (#s 5 & 15); stone and wood contrasting elements (#13); interior/exterior blending through window walls (#s 2, 3, 8, 9, 11, & 13); interior courtyards (#6); use of brick with stylized mortar and bonding (#16); decorative use of stone elements (#2); brick and wood contrasting elements (#6); use of decks and cantilevers (#s 8, 9, 11, 13, 14, 15, & 16); the dramatic use of a steep site and ledge (#s 5, 6, 8, 9, 11, 12, & 13); use of water features (#s 14 & 16); and the use of modern-style window configurations throughout. The windows and some materials on several homes have been replaced in-kind or with compatible windows or materials consistent with the style. The overall massing of most homes is intact, though several have additions that are skillfully done to be compatible to the original design. While #9 is the most altered building in the historic district, its expansion was executed in the style that is sympathetic to the original so that it is still considered a contributing resource. In contrast, the flat roof of #17 was replaced with a gable roof, a significant change of a character-defining feature which makes the building a non-contributing resource. Two other homes, #s 7 and 12, are also non-contributing resources due to the extent of alteration to the original design. Overall, the historic district has very good integrity of location, design, setting, feeling, and association and most buildings have a reasonable level of integrity of materials

    2018.11.16 Philip Johnson (July 8, 1906 – Jan. 25, 2005) 10:00 “The entire modern movement – looked at as an intellectual movement dating from Ruskin and Viollet-le-Duc, going through the Werkbund, Bauhaus, Le Corbusier to World War II – may be winding up its days. There is only one absolute today and that is change. There are no rules, surely no certainties in any of the arts. There is only the feeling of a wonderful freedom, of endless past years of historically great buildings to enjoy. I cannot worry about a new eclecticism. Even Richardson who considered himself an eclectic was not one. A good architect will always do original work. A bad one would do bad ‘modern’ work as well as bad work, that is imitative with historical forms. Structural honesty seems to me one of the bugaboos that we should free ourselves from very quickly. The Greeks with their marble columns imitating wood, and covering up the wood roofs inside! The Gothic designers with their wooden roofs above to protect their delicate vaulting. And Michelangelo, the greatest architect in history, with his Mannerist column! No, our day no longer has need of moral crutches of late 19th century vintage. If Villet-le-Duc was what the young Frank Lloyd Wright was nurtured on, Geoffrey Scott and Russell Hitchcock were my Bibles. I am old enough to have enjoyed the International Style immensely and worked in it with the greatest pleasure. I still believe Le Corbusier and Mies to be the greatest living architects. But now the age is changing so fast.

    The Booth House: Architectural Historical Context Philip Johnson’s First House. By Matthew Damora Recently the Damora family was visited at their family home, Philip Johnson’s Booth House, by Robert A.M. Stern, Dean of The Yale School of Architecture, notable architect, and long time friend of Philip Johnson. He told of an outing from the nearby Glass House 20 or 30 years earlier when he was driving thru the countryside with Johnson and Philip suddenly said “do you want to see my first house?” They drove up a long driveway to a secluded site, and there was the Booth House. Not finding the Damoras at home, (Johnson knew Robert Damora as they had traveled in the same MCM circles since the 1930’s) Johnson and Stern looked around a bit and then departed. Johnson had previously built a house for himself in Cambridge, MA. But maybe an architect’s first commission tends to feel more like the “first”. The Booth House was built in 1946 and has been occupied by the Damora family since 1955. The house is exemplary of many Mid Century Modern masterpieces of residential architecture in that it acquired long term inhabitants early in its existence; when you find environment that soothes your soul there is little motivation to move on. Many notable MCM houses, like the Booth House, have largely remained out of the public eye for half a century or more as their owners happily and quietly enjoyed the special environments they provided. (The Booth House has received some attention in the numerous books recently released on the life and works of its very famous architect, Philip Johnson, just prior to and subsequent to his death.) But now that the original generation of owners is reaching advanced years, as the elder Damoras have, a number of these houses are resurfacing to public view as they come on the market.
