The Black Widow – by Daniel Silva – (Harper Collins) – 2016 The spy/thriller/fiction genre (in my humble opinion, anyway) doesn’t get much better than British author Ken Fol- lett, or the Sean Dillon character series created by American author Robert Harris. But, Daniel Silva comes in a very close third. Born in Michigan and raised a Roman Catholic, Silva converted to Judaism as an adult. So, it follows that all but three of his nineteen best-selling novels feature an Israeli spy named Gabriel Allon, whose art restoration ex- pertise frequently serves as his operative cover. Allon works for the “Office”, Israel’s chief intelligence and spy organization and he is in line to replace Ari Shamon as its chief. While this is an enviable position, it also means directing intelligence activity from headquarters rather than working in the field, so Allon is understandably ambivalent about this promotion. His résumé is enviable and it showcases just how seamlessly Silvia can weave fiction with fact. For instance, we all remember the very real trage- dy at the 1972 Munich Olympics, but in The Rembrandt Affair, it is the fictional Allon who personally stalks and as- sassinates the leader and five members of the Black September movement, the operation which cemented his inter- national reputation in the intelligence communities. As his promotion day draws near, however, a massive bomb attack occurs in Paris, killing scores, including Hannah Weinberg, one of Gabriel’s oldest and closest friends. The French government presses him into service to hunt down the mastermind of the plot, a terrorist known only as “Saladin”. (I should note that Silvia began work on this novel prior to the 2015 terrorist bombings in Paris and Brussels. In his Foreword to the novel, he explains “ After briefly considering setting aside the typescript, I chose to complete it as originally conceived, as though the tragic events had not yet occurred in the imaginary world where my characters live and work. The similarities between the real and fictitious attacks……are entirely coincidental. I take no pride in my prescience. I only wish that the murder- ous, millenarian terrorism of the Islamic State lived solely on the pages of this story”) “Saladin” is a clever and treacherous madman who has eluded all attempts at capture; in fact, no one knows his true identity or even his nationality. Attempting any covert action against Saladin would be not only imprudent, but im- possible. Allon opts instead to infiltrate his organization and, at the very least, learn Saladin’s true identity. He re- lentlessly seeks and finds the perfect woman recruit to pose as an extremist “black widow” (i.e. suicide bomber). She is a Jewish physician who initially resists the offer to take on this dangerous assignment, but Allon and his team finally convince her of the mission’s importance and how her very unique skills may be crucial to ferreting out the dangerous Saladin. From the time Allon’s “black widow” begins her assignment, first in Brussels, then France and, finally, to Washington DC, the heart pounding intrigue does not abate. She meets another, and very real, “black widow”, with whom she must pretend to conspire in order to complete her assignment. Although Allon’s operatives are constantly monitor- ing her movements, Saladin stays one step ahead of them until he finally unleashes a series of catastrophic bomb- ings in DC. Of course, since Saladin is the only one who knows all the details of the attacks, he escapes harm in every instance. This ruthless coward leaves not only scores of hapless civilians to die but also his own operatives, many of whom were not suicide bombers and who believed they would live to fight another day. Silva’s well developed characters and believable plots never disappoint. As the Gabriel Allon series has evolved, my recommendation (predictably) is to read the series in chronological order. But if I had to recommend just one of Sil- va’s novels, it would not be one in the Allon series, but his first, The Unlikely Spy. It is WWII/D-Day spy intrigue at its very best. Book Review by Carolyn Richard Diamond Bella Diamond, a Calico, is 11 years old and Bella, a Tabby, is 10 years old. I have had Diamond for 10 years, before that she was in a cat-hoarder's home. Bella has been with me about 9 years. She was a stray found at the shelter door - pregnant. she went on to have 2 kittens that were adopted before I got Bella. They are both very good at catching mice. Sometimes they do it as a team. Bella has, also, been known to catch snakes (not my favorite) and let them go in the house. The most favorite activity for these girls now is sleeping. • Art and Terror in Daniel Silva's Spy Novel the Kill Artist
Journal of Literature and Art Studies, August 2020, Vol. 10, No. 8, 676-681 doi: 10.17265/2159-5836/2020.08.006 D DAVID PUBLISHING Art and Terror in Daniel Silva’s Spy Novel The Kill Artist Maria Antónia Lima University of Évora, Évora, Portugal; University of Lisbon Centre for English Studies, Lisbon, Portugal The importance of Daniel Silva’s past, close to a Portuguese cultural environment, will be relevant to understand the psychological profile of his popular protagonist and central character, Gabriel Allon, a melancholic man haunted by his past, but also someone who is a gifted art restorer, very sensitive to the values of loyalty and fidelity, which the author assumed to have inherited from his Portuguese family. Being a spy and an art expert, Allon seems to conciliate two contradictory sides of the human personality. The connection between Portuguese and American culture, in this writer’s background, could have been responsible for the creation of a character who can be, at the same time, very sensitive and very violent; an assassin who is an Israeli secret agent and the world’s finest restorer of the Old Masters’ paintings. A perfect double who does justice to his creator’s double origin, which contributed to the success of The Kill Artist (2000), where terror is practiced as one of the fine arts by a hero very loyal and faithful to his complex cultural origins, living in a diaspora as the eternal wandering Jew. Keywords: Daniel Silva, art; terror, spy novel With more than 50 thousand books sold in Portugal, the bestseller writer Daniel Silva, an American Jew educated and raised by a Portuguese catholic family from Azores, is nowadays among the best of the youngest American spy novelists in the rankings of The New York Times, The Washington Post, and other important American newspapers.

Champion: Daniel Silva's Treatment of Swiss Society and Culture in Selected Mossad Spy Novels "Why Does it Always Have to be Switzerland?" 1 Daniel Silva's Treatment of Swiss Society and Culture in Selected Mossad Spy Novels by Brian Champion The title quote is uttered by Mossad operative Eli Lavon, who, upon being tasked to assist in the illegal penetration of a sover eign country, despairs of the mission's success, whose two-fold metric is the apprehension of an existential threat to the State of Israel , and his safe return to hi s adjunct professorship in Jerusalem, all while avoiding detection or incarceration. His angst is well -placed, as Switzerland is well-known in both real and imaginary in tell igence circles as a formi dable environment in which to conduct secret missions of any kind.

  • Reading Guide the English Girl LP
Reading Guide The English Girl LP By Daniel Silva ISBN: 9780062253811 Introduction Seven days One girl No second chances Madeline Hart is a rising star in Britain's governing party: beautiful, intelligent, driven by an impoverished childhood to succeed. But she is also a woman with a dark secret: she is the lover of Prime Minister Jonathan Lancaster. Somehow, her kidnappers have learned of the affair, and they intend to make the British leader pay dearly for his sins. Fearful of a scandal that will destroy his career, Lancaster decides to handle the matter privately rather than involve the British police. It is a risky gambit, not only for the prime minister but also for the operative who will conduct the search. You have seven days, or the girl dies. Enter Gabriel Allon—master assassin, art restorer and spy—who is no stranger to dangerous assignments or political intrigue. With the clock ticking, Gabriel embarks on a desperate attempt to bring Madeline home safely. His mission takes him from the criminal underworld of Marseilles to an isolated valley in the mountains of Provence to the stately if faded corridors of power in London—and, finally, to a pulse-pounding climax in Moscow, a city of violence and spies where there is a long list of men who wish Gabriel dead. From the novel's opening pages until the shocking ending when the true motives behind Madeline's disappearance are revealed, The English Girl will hold readers spellbound. It is a timely reminder that, in today's world, money often matters more than ideology.

  • Book of the Week
Book of the Week The Order by Daniel Silva Book Review by Wayne Wilkerson The Order is Daniel Silva’s 20th novel, in a series that began in 1996 with The Unlikely Spy. The protagonist in his first three novels was Michael Osborne. His fourth novel, The Kill Artist, introduces us to Gabriel Allon. Gabriel is an Israeli whose mother was a Holocaust survivor. He was a promising artist at the time of the Black September massacre of Israeli Olympic athletes in September 1970. He was recruited to hunt down and eliminate the terrorists responsible. Once his task was complete, he tried to return to his art career, but that was not to be. He is soon a rising star within the Mossad, Israel’s top intelligence community. By the time The Order is written Gabriel is probably in his 60s and is working hard to balance his career and a second marriage. As the novel opens Gabriel is trying to enjoy some rest and relaxation with his family in Venice when he learns that an old friend has died. As it happens, this old friend was Pope Paul VII, and it’s not long before Allon is summoned by the pontiff’s personal secretary. Archbishop Luigi Donati has reason to believe that the Holy Father did not die a natural death. Allon discovers that the most likely culprits in the death of the pope are connected to far- right leaders throughout Europe. The rediscovery of a lost Gospel also sheds new light on Christian anti- Semitism. The villains here are Catholic traditionalists “populist” politicians who appeal to nativist, anti- globalist sympathies.

He is also designed to be unhindered by any physical, emotional or financial restrictions and can therefore exercise his power (against any person, organisation or situation) in the pursuit of an ideology which defines and promotes the political intentions and the cultural influences of his author. This thesis challenges the figure of Gabriel Allon by arguing firstly, that he is in fact a highly ambivalent, morally problematic figure and secondly, in demonstrating where elements of real-life (adapted by the author to support his ideological stance) have undermined the reliability of the narrative. The thesis has also examined some of the political sub-texts employed by the author to question whether his methodology is serving to enhance the plausibility of the fiction or whether it is embedding dangerously subjective depictions of counter-terrorism into the reader’s consciousness.
