At such times, the only sensible thing to do is to sit down and read an intriguing novel. Shelley Hittinger Let me recommend to you the books of #1 New York Times bestselling author, Daniel Silva. We are extremely fortunate that our major fundraiser for the year will bring Mr. Silva to Beth Sholom to speak about his novels and his views on Israel on Sunday, May 5 at 7pm.

The majority of Mr. Silva’s books chronicle the missions of his favorite protagonist, the globe-trotting agent and ace art restorer . Through the adventures of Gabriel Allon, Mr. Silva is able to explore issues of great importance to the Jewish community, such as the Holocaust, Al-Qaeda and international terrorism, the Arab Spring and the Arab-Israeli conflict.

While there have been other authors offering thrillers about Jewish topics, Mr. Silva’s plot lines have foreshadowed actual events. For example, in The Rembrandt Affair, we learn that the Iranians lie to the world and work to develop nuclear weapons, while Israel, Britain, and the United States combine forces—all behind the scenes and far below any official radar—to carry out a daring operation to sabotage Iran’s nuclear program. Just weeks after Silva released this novel, the first leaks began to emerge about the Stuxnet virus, which at least temporarily crippled Iran’s push for a bomb. So, when Mr. Silva—himself a convert to Judaism—writes a novel about unrest in the Holy Land, as he has done in , it is worth taking note. In an interview by Michael Rosen of Tablet Magazine, Mr. Silva ob- served, “As the entire region becomes more Islamic, it’s only natural that the conflict is going to become more overtly religious than it already is. If that is the case, then Jerusalem, this symbol of the navel of the world, this place that all the three Abrahamic faiths hold sacred, is going to be a flashpoint for the future.”

Our evening with Mr. Silva promises to be thoroughly fascinating and thought provoking-- a truly memorable event. This will be Mr. Silva’s only appearance in the Philadelphia area, and we are counting on you to help fill the entire Main Sanctuary. However, the achieve- ment of our fundraising goals depends on your support as Patron Sponsors. We are hoping that all of you who are able, will generously become Patron Sponsors. For your contribution of at least $1,500, you will receive an invitation to the Pre-event dinner reception on April 28 at the home of Michael and Kristin Karp, as well as other incentives. Additional information concerning Patron Sponsors is in this edition of Connections or you can call the Beth Sholom Office at 215-887-1342. It is your love of Beth Sholom and your investment in our synagogue which enables us to look forward to a strong future.

I hope you will excuse me while I return to the latest adventures of Gabriel Allon in the Daniel Silva novel that I am reading.

Jonathan S. Tobin (center), senior online editor of Commentary magazine and former editor of the Jewish Exponent, spoke on January 13, 2013 at a Men’s Club Brunch to an overflow crowd on the topic of “Israel, President Obama and the Middle East.” To his left is Don Sable, Programming Vice-President and to his right is Elliot Miller, Men’s Club President.

MEN’S CLUB SHABBAT – March 8th at 8:00 P.M. On Friday evening, March 8th, we will celebrate our first Men’s Club Shabbat of 2013 at which time our members will lead and participate in the service. At this service, our Club will be honoring Bob Cohen, a former President of Men’s Club who has been active in our Club and in our Congregation for over 40 years.

AT THE MOVIES WITH THE MEN’S CLUB – March 13th 7:30 P.M. We will be featuring the film “The Island on Bird Street,” which tells the story of a Jewish boy who is left on his own for months in a ruined house in a Jewish Ghetto in Poland. He must learn all the tricks of survival under life-threatening conditions. The film is in English. Dessert and snacks will be served.

YOM HASHOAH CANDLE PACKING – March 17th starting at 8:30 A.M. Join Men’s Club in packing Yom HaShoah candles for distribution to our congregants and various Hillel Centers where our children are attending college. Packing will take place in the President’s Lounge. It only takes an hour of your time to perform a great Mitzvah. For additional information, contact Saul Langsam at 215-635-4901.

The world must never forget the Shoah, truly the darkest period in the history of the Jewish People. Please join with people around the world on Yom HaShoah, and light this candle on Sunday evening, April 7th, corresponding to 27 Nisan 5773, in memory of the victims of the Holocaust. We do this for those whose entire families and towns perished in the Shoah, and for whom no one is left to light a Yahrzeit remembrance candle. “Light a Candle, Preserve a Memory”.

Every year, our Herb Sobel Me- morial Food Drive ensures that people in the Jewish community are able to celebrate Passover nutritiously, ritually and with pride of her- itage. Kindly return our request letter, along with a check made payable to Beth Sholom Men’s Club in order to help us fulfill this important mitzvah.

CONNECTIONS, p8 NATIONAL HEALTHCARE EXPERTS COME TO BETH SHOLOM FOR CIVIL DISCOURSE FORUM g{âÜáwtç? `tÜv{ EK ∏ JMFCÑÅ

Ask policy experts Stuart Butler, Ph.D. (left) and David B. Nash, M.D., M.B.A. (right) about the appropriate role of the federal government in healthcare and you’ll get two very different answers. Yet both have agreed to discuss this critical issue civilly at the in- augural forum of the Bernard Wolfman Civil Discourse Project at Beth Sholom Congre- gation, here on March 28, 7:30pm. Chris Satullo, vice president for news & civic dialogue at WHYY and co-founder/co-director of the Penn Project for Civic Engage- ment, will moderate.

“As Jews, we’ve inherited a legacy of learning and social activism,” explains Beth Sholom member Dina Wolfman Baker, who founded the Project to memorialize her father, Bernard Wolfman. “My father exemplified that tradition. This is my way of shar- ing his legacy.”

In her Rosh Hashanah sermon, Rabbi Merow said, “Judaism believes strongly in a mul- tiplicity of truths…we can disagree without being disagreeable.” The Project creates a place to discuss vital issues while modeling and valuing civil disagreement. It provides opportunities for people on all sides of an issue to learn from each other and take mean- ingful action. It draws upon our traditions of Tzedakah, Talmudic debate, and prohibi- tion of Lashon Hara (evil tongue).

The forum will take place each year during Pesach, to symbolize its celebration of free- (left) Stuart Butler, Ph.D., director of the dom of (respectful) speech and political activism. Heritage Foundation's Center for Policy Innovation, and (right) David Nash, MD, Join the conversation on Twitter (@civildiscourse1) and on Facebook at The Bernard MBA, founding dean of the Jefferson Wolfman Civil Discourse Project. The free forum is open to the public and requires pre- School of Population Health registration at www.CivilDiscourseProject.org. If you cannot register online, call the synagogue office at 215.887.1342. All registrants will pledge to uphold the principles of civil discourse upon which the program is founded.
