The Black Widow – by Daniel Silva – (Harper Collins) – 2016 The spy/thriller/fiction genre (in my humble opinion, anyway) doesn’t get much better than British author Ken Fol- lett, or the Sean Dillon character series created by American author Robert Harris. But, Daniel Silva comes in a very close third. Born in Michigan and raised a Roman Catholic, Silva converted to Judaism as an adult. So, it follows that all but three of his nineteen best-selling novels feature an Israeli spy named Gabriel Allon, whose art restoration ex- pertise frequently serves as his operative cover. Allon works for the “Office”, Israel’s chief intelligence and spy organization and he is in line to replace Ari Shamon as its chief. While this is an enviable position, it also means directing intelligence activity from headquarters rather than working in the field, so Allon is understandably ambivalent about this promotion. His résumé is enviable and it showcases just how seamlessly Silvia can weave fiction with fact. For instance, we all remember the very real trage- dy at the 1972 Munich Olympics, but in The Rembrandt Affair, it is the fictional Allon who personally stalks and as- sassinates the leader and five members of the Black September movement, the operation which cemented his inter- national reputation in the intelligence communities. As his promotion day draws near, however, a massive bomb attack occurs in Paris, killing scores, including Hannah Weinberg, one of Gabriel’s oldest and closest friends. The French government presses him into service to hunt down the mastermind of the plot, a terrorist known only as “Saladin”. (I should note that Silvia began work on this novel prior to the 2015 terrorist bombings in Paris and Brussels. In his Foreword to the novel, he explains “ After briefly considering setting aside the typescript, I chose to complete it as originally conceived, as though the tragic events had not yet occurred in the imaginary world where my characters live and work. The similarities between the real and fictitious attacks……are entirely coincidental. I take no pride in my prescience. I only wish that the murder- ous, millenarian terrorism of the Islamic State lived solely on the pages of this story”) “Saladin” is a clever and treacherous madman who has eluded all attempts at capture; in fact, no one knows his true identity or even his nationality. Attempting any covert action against Saladin would be not only imprudent, but im- possible. Allon opts instead to infiltrate his organization and, at the very least, learn Saladin’s true identity. He re- lentlessly seeks and finds the perfect woman recruit to pose as an extremist “black widow” (i.e. suicide bomber). She is a Jewish physician who initially resists the offer to take on this dangerous assignment, but Allon and his team finally convince her of the mission’s importance and how her very unique skills may be crucial to ferreting out the dangerous Saladin. From the time Allon’s “black widow” begins her assignment, first in Brussels, then France and, finally, to Washington DC, the heart pounding intrigue does not abate. She meets another, and very real, “black widow”, with whom she must pretend to conspire in order to complete her assignment. Although Allon’s operatives are constantly monitor- ing her movements, Saladin stays one step ahead of them until he finally unleashes a series of catastrophic bomb- ings in DC. Of course, since Saladin is the only one who knows all the details of the attacks, he escapes harm in every instance. This ruthless coward leaves not only scores of hapless civilians to die but also his own operatives, many of whom were not suicide bombers and who believed they would live to fight another day. Silva’s well developed characters and believable plots never disappoint. As the Gabriel Allon series has evolved, my recommendation (predictably) is to read the series in chronological order. But if I had to recommend just one of Sil- va’s novels, it would not be one in the Allon series, but his first, The Unlikely Spy. It is WWII/D-Day spy intrigue at its very best. Book Review by Carolyn Richard Diamond Bella Diamond, a Calico, is 11 years old and Bella, a Tabby, is 10 years old. I have had Diamond for 10 years, before that she was in a cat-hoarder's home. Bella has been with me about 9 years. She was a stray found at the shelter door - pregnant. she went on to have 2 kittens that were adopted before I got Bella. They are both very good at catching mice. Sometimes they do it as a team. Bella has, also, been known to catch snakes (not my favorite) and let them go in the house. The most favorite activity for these girls now is sleeping.
