On the left, a humanistic worldview seeks to 26 uphold the intrinsic value of the person; on the right, a normative worldview holds that 27 human worth is contingent upon conformity to rules. In this article, we situate humanism and 28 normativism within the context of contemporary models of political ideology as a function of 29 motivated social cognition, beliefs about the social world, and personality traits. In four 30 studies conducted in the U.S. and Sweden, normativism was robustly associated with rightist 31 (or conservative) self-placement; conservative issue preferences; resistance to change and 32 acceptance of inequality; right-wing authoritarianism and social dominance orientation; 33 system justification and its underlying epistemic and existential motives to reduce uncertainty 34 and threat; and a lack of openness, emotionality, and honesty-humility. Humanism exhibited 35 the opposite relations to most of these constructs, but it was largely unrelated to epistemic 36 and existential needs. Humanism was strongly associated with preferences for equality, 37 openness to change, and low levels of authoritarianism, social dominance, and general and 38 economic system justification. We conclude that polarity theory possesses considerable 39 potential to explain how conflicts between worldviews shape contemporary politics. 40 41 Keywords: humanism, normativism, worldview, ideology, political attitudes, beliefs, elective 42 affinities, ideo-affective resonance, polarity theory 43 2 Polarity Theory and Left-Right Conflict 44 “Ideology appears in many domains, but it is found in its purest form in those controversies 45 which are centuries old, and which have never ceased to find true believers, whether the issue 46 is joined in mathematics or in aesthetics or in politics. Over and over again, whether theorists 47 address themselves to one or another of these domains, they appear to become polarized on 48 the same issues.” (Silvan Tomkins, 1963, [1, p. 389]) 49 50 Introduction: Personality and Politics 51 There has been a significant revival of interest in the link between personality and 52 politics [2-5]—a topic that once garnered tremendous attention in both psychology and 53 political science [6-10]. Because of its methodological hegemony, most researchers of recent 54 vintage have adopted the “Big Five” taxonomy of personality traits as an integrative 55 framework for guiding research in this area [2, 5, 11-14]. That is, researchers have largely 56 focused on the traits of openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and 57 emotional stability—and the extent to which they are correlated with social and political 58 attitudes. 59 Despite considerable strengths, the Big Five model leaves out a number of 60 theoretically rich aspects of personality that are associated with one’s personal worldview, 61 such as goals, values, scripts, narratives, personal constructs, and philosophical assumptions 62 about the world [15-18]. These omissions are significant insofar as such features of 63 personality shape “the dynamics of [the individual’s] initial resonance to ideology, of [his or 64 her] seduction by ideas, of disenchantment with ideas, of addiction to ideas,” as one of the 65 great psychological theoreticians of the left and right, Silvan Tomkins [19, p. 73], 66 characterized the broad subject matter of the “psychology of knowledge.” 67 In the early years of the 21st century, a number of studies have built on earlier research 68 programs, documenting useful and interesting connections between political ideology, on one 3 Polarity Theory and Left-Right Conflict 69 hand, and various types of character traits [11], personal values [20], moral intuitions [21], 70 and beliefs about the social world [22], on the other. At the same time, the scientific yield has 71 been largely taxonomic. These research programs have generated lists of specific 72 discrepancies between leftists and rightists (or liberals and conservatives), but they have not 73 produced an integrative account of how personal worldviews might structure political 74 ideology (and vice versa). As a result, they tend to miss broader patterns of meaning that give 75 rise to left-right divergence in ideological sensibilities [18]. We seek to rectify this oversight 76 by revisiting Tomkins’ [1, 19, 23] pioneering work on polarity theory, mainly because it 77 offers a sweeping, ambitious, and yet detailed theoretical account of the worldviews that 78 animate ideologies of the left and right. 79 80 Polarity theory: Humanism vs. normativism 81 According to Tomkins’ [1, 19, 23, 24] polarity theory, ideological thought is 82 structured universally by a clash between two opposing worldviews. On the left, a humanistic 83 worldview seeks to uphold the dignity of the person, representing him or her as intrinsically 84 good and valuable, as “the measure, an end in himself [or herself], an active, creative, 85 thinking, desiring, loving force in nature” [1, p. 391]. On the right, a normative worldview 86 represents the person as devoid of intrinsic goodness and value and able to “realize himself, 87 attain his full stature only through struggle toward, participation in, conformity to a norm, a 88 measure, an ideal essence basically prior to and independent of man” [1, p. 392]. 89 From these opposing worldviews of humanism and normativism, Tomkins derived a 90 wide range of psychological consequences, including a parallel set of left-right divergences 91 with respect to: (1) attitudes to affect, namely openness, tolerance, and enthusiasm as 92 opposed to uneasiness, restraint, and self-control; (2) interpersonal attitudes, namely 93 unconditional love, respect, and warmth as opposed to punishment and respect that is 4 Polarity Theory and Left-Right Conflict 94 contingent upon conformity and achievement; (3) epistemology, namely imagination, 95 creativity, and excitement as opposed to discipline, observation, and the minimization of 96 error; and (4) political values, namely the promotion of human rights and well-being as 97 opposed to the maintenance of law and social order (see also [25]). 98 Polarity theory was developed, at least in part, on the basis of observations made by 99 cultural anthropologists, philosophers, and political theorists about the cultural meanings 100 associated with left- and right-wing ideologies in various countries [26] (see also 27]). 101 According to Tomkins [1, p. 389], there is a “love affair” between the individual’s “feelings 102 and ideas about feelings” and organized belief systems, such as political (or religious) 103 ideologies. Over time, the love affair tends to strengthen, and the bonds between 104 psychological and ideological forces are likely to tighten. Tomkins wrote that: “the fit need 105 not at the outset be perfect, so long as there is a similarity between what the individual thinks 106 and feels is desirable and the characteristics of [the ideology] sufficient to set the two entities 107 into sympathetic coordination with each other” (p. 389). 108 To some degree, polarity theory informed theory and research in social, personality, 109 and political psychology during the latter half of the 20th century, but it never rose to a 110 position of great prominence in these areas. This is unfortunate, given the richness and 111 originality of Tomkins’ theorizing and the fact that it is unique in offering an integrative 112 psychological account of how personal worldviews structure ideology [25, 28-30]. Although 113 several contemporary psychological theories of ideology highlight the roles of values, moral 114 convictions, and beliefs about the social world [20-22], these models are more parochial and 115 less ambitious than Tomkins’ theory. Among other things, they fail to appreciate the 116 connections across different worldview domains (such as art, values, science, philosophy, and 117 politics) and the underlying structure of personality that gives rise to these connections. 118 Tomkins’ approach is more promising because it points the way toward an integrative 5 Polarity Theory and Left-Right Conflict 119 conception of worldviews by identifying underlying philosophical assumptions, personal 120 constructs, and narrative scripts or schemas that help to explain why various aspects of 121 personality and ideology are intertwined in the first place [16, 18, 25, 30, 31]. 122 To capture the contrast between humanistic and normative orientations in multiple 123 domains of life, Tomkins [32] constructed the Polarity Scale in which respondents were 124 presented with 59 pairs of statements and asked to endorse one of the statements, both, or 125 neither (reprinted in [33]). Ascough, Queen’s University Abstract In a text that has caused no shortage of speculation and consternation, Paul links “desire” (epithymia) with “death” in writing of his “desire to depart and be with Christ” (Phil. 1:23). While “desire” has mostly negative valences in Paul’s letters, often linked to sexual craving, here it is linked to his broad fascination with death that is apparent in his frequent references not only to Christ’s crucifixion but also more generally both to physical death and metaphorical death. Paul’s contemplation of which is preferable, life or death, raises questions about how issues of social and existential meaning are affectively negotiated under the aspect of death, under what conditions one desires death, and what is the nature of desire itself. Thinking in this vein suggests an ecology of instincts vital to the affective valences of desiring death. This paper will explore these issues to show how Paul’s own desire may be expressing both a passionate pull to his idea of Christ and a longing to escape that very passion. These expressions, which are encoded through multiple bodily channels, allow us to identify distinct emotions in ourselves and others. After groundbreaking theorizing by Charles Darwin and early empirical work by Ekman and Izard, further research in emotion science revealed evidence in single cultures for more emotional expressions above and beyond the well- studied set comprising of anger, contempt, disgust, fear, happiness, sadness, and surprise. Some of these new emotions were displayed using nonfacial modalities, such as the voice, touch, and posture. Following the logic set forth by these methods and findings, we tested two hypotheses: 1) there are more than seven universal expressions of emotion; 2) expressive universality is not limited to facial expression. Findings from three cross-cultural experimental studies yielded support to the above hypotheses. Our first study collected 5500 expressions of twenty-one emotions from five different cultures. Spontaneous behavioral analysis revealed core facial and bodily patterns for each of the 21 states across all five cultures. Additionally, we uncovered over 100 cultural variations to the universal patterns and hundreds of individual variations.

    Restorative Practices and Discipline | Chapter 2 The Nine Affects and the Compass of Shame We have talked about how affective questions and statements and other restorative processes provide opportunities for people to express themselves. The psychology of affect, based on the work of psychologist Silvan Tomkins, helps us better understand why human beings act and respond in certain ways and why restorative practices works so well. According to Tomkins, affects are nine innate biological pro- grams (see Figure 6). They are instantaneous reactions to stimuli in one’s environment. Feelings are the awareness of the presence of affect. They are experienced seconds after an affect has been trig- gered. Emotions are the learned responses from the accumulated stories and scripts acquired through experience of one’s family, culture and community. In an article on prisoner abuse at Abu Ghraib W prison in Iraq, Mark Danner has shown that the methods used to soften up and interrogate detainees by American military personnel can be traced back to techniques developed by the CIA in the 1960s. The best known manual of such procedures, the CIA’s Counterintelligence Interrogation of Resistance Sources, produced in 1963 at the height of the Cold War, states that the purpose of all coercive techniques of interrogation is “to induce regression.” The result of external pressures of sufficient intensity is the loss of those defenses “most re­ cently acquired by civilized man . Relatively small degrees of homeostatic de­ rangement, fatigue, pain, sleep loss, or anxiety may impair these functions.”1 The programmatic manipulation and control of the environment, including the use of blindfolds or hooding, sleep and food deprivation, exposure to intense heat and cold, sensory deprivation, and similar methods, are meant to disorient the pris­ oner and break down resistance. “Once this disruption is achieved,” a later ver­ sion of the manual observes, the subject’s resistance is “seriously impaired.” He experiences a “kind of psychological shock” as a result of which he is far more open to suggestion and far likelier to comply with what is asked of him than be­ fore. "He weighed over 300 pounds, had the strength of three men, and when he got liquored up, there was nothing to do but run and hide. When he was drunk, Tony threatened to go to the homes of his fellow workers and bust them up." Management wanted him fired, his co-workers wanted him fired. "No you don't," said the union. "We can't let you fire anyone." They threatened to shut the mine down unless Tony was reinstated with full pay. The union was mad at the owners. The miners were mad at Tony and the union. The mine owners said Tony would never work there again no matter what. Tony was mad, too, and everyone was afraid of what he would do if he got really mad. To a certain extent, they were all correct in their views. As long as the problem was framed in terms of who was right and who was wrong, or which set of rules would dominate, the situation could only get worse. Impasse.
