Anca Parmena Popescu, que me receberam na Romênia e me auxiliaram de todas as maneiras possíveis. 7 Resumo Esta dissertação foi escrita tendo como principal objetivo o desvelamento do processo pelo qual a cultura popular de um povo politicamente oprimido acabou por ser ressignificada por seu opressor e então introduzida no imaginário deste, como símbolo do imaginário literário e artístico, a fim de corroborar a ideologia neo-colonialista, sendo usada para o desmerecimento do povo em questão. O vampiro, na cultura popular, representa o mal supremo, para estes, os estrangeiros que não compartilham de sua religião e de sua simbologia, que é amaldiçoado pela divindade e obrigado a vagar pela terra dos vivos, mesmo estando morto. Perscrutando esta personagem do imaginário popular, o estudioso inglês Sabine Baring-Gould o traduz e o ressignifica para a cultura de massas da Inglaterra Vitoriana. O mal representado pelo vampiro passa a ser não mais o que era estrangeiro para os povos dos Bálcãs, mas o estrangeiro para a perspectiva dos ingleses, o homem incivilizado nativo das colônias. Baseando-se em Baring-Gould, Bram Stoker escreve sua obra de ficção gótica, Drácula, como forma de difundir, entre os cidadãos vitorianos, os valores neo-colonialistas de castidade, honra, civilização e xenofobia. O livro de Stoker, além de ser uma obra de entretenimento extremamente popular, também se destaca por exaltar o cidadão do mundo civilizado, isto é, as metrópoles coloniais, em suas relações de dominação para com as pessoas das colônias, dos cantos escuros da Terra, apresentando estas como monstros incivilizados, capazes das maiores atrocidades. Palavras Chave: Vampiros, Drácula, Inglaterra Vitoriana, Cultura Popular, Século XIX 8 Abstract This thesis was written to uncover the process were a cultural symbol of a political oppressed people gets in possession of their oppressors, is modified, inserted in their literary imaginary, and then used by the neocolonialist ideology to disqualify the oppressed people‟s culture. The vampire, in popular culture, represents the supreme evil, for them, the foreigners, which do not have the same religion and simbology, being cursed by their God and obligated to walk on the living world, even after death. Studding this character of the popular imaginary, the english intellectual Sabine Baring-Gould change and bring it to the Victorian England mass culture. The evil represented by the vampire is no more the one that was exotic for the Balcanic people, but the foreigner for the english perspective, the uncivilized natives from the colonies. Based in Sabine Baring-Gould, Bram Stoker wrote his gothic fiction book, Drácula, as a way to propagate, for the Victorian citizens, the neocolonialist values of chastity, honor, civilization and xenophobia. Stoker‟s book, besides being a very popular entertainment book, is also famous for the exaltations to the civilized world denizen, the inhabitant of the colonial potencies, in their dominance relationship over the colonial people, the inhabitants of the dark corners of the world, presenting them as monsters capable of the worst depravations.     BEHOLD THE BEAST: VICTORIAN ANXIETIES AND MONSTROUS FORMS By Ben Pascoe A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirement for the Degree MASTER OF ARTS Major Subject: English West Texas A&M University Canyon, Texas May 2019 ABSTRACT This paper seeks to analyze two examples of Victorian Gothic, the 1885 novella The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and the 1897 novel Dracula as texts dealing with anxieties of degeneration, medicine, and addiction on the personal scale and a wider societal scale respectively. Its origin can be traced back to the cradle of civilization and it can be found in every in culture all over the world. Though the shape the European vampire takes remains in flux until roughly the Middle Ages, usually taking the form of evil spirits or the spirit’s unburied dead, they all have one thing in common: the desire to consume human blood. Montague Summers traces the origin of the vampire back to ancient Sumer and the people’s belief in the Ekimmu, where the vampire is described as a “spirit of an unburied corpse [that] could find no rest and remained prowling about the earth so long as its body was above ground,” although a vampire could also be formed from the spirit of one who was buried but whose family did not come to offer the food and drink rites of the dead (219).

    Brides: Voluptuous Devils or Fallen Angels? The Transgressive Sexuality of Female Vampires and its Subversion in Bram Stoker's Dracula Introduction From the nineteenth century on, a vampire is by definition a highly erotic creature carrying in itself a strange mixture of nourishment, disease and sexuality, making it so threatening. It feeds on living people through an act of oral sexuality while spreading its own contagious illness. Especially if it is a female, it is highly likely that she would be depicted as a lecherous beast. Throughout the text, dozens of sexualised images can be encountered of both sexes but here the focus is limited to sexuality of vampire women. In this paper, I will analyse how feminine sexuality is conceived of and I will pay special attention to the subversive aspect of female vampiric sexual power in Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Vampire -woman – a Fallen Angel? To begin with, one ought to note that there are indeed vampirised women in Dracula, a fact usually forgotten by readers of the novel and often left untouched by critics in connection with this masculine late-Victorian text. However, vampirism of the “weaker sex” is worth investigating especially in this specific repressive Victorian context. Turning women into vampires is seen as an extremely erotic feature because vampire women can be considered the most dreaded kind in this era: fallen women. Fallen women are the total opposite of the spiritual ideal, the “angel in the house” who has no body at all, hence creating what is “often referred to as the virgin/whore dichotomy” (Dionisopoulos and Leah 209).

    Unseen Horrors: The Unmade Films of Hammer Thesis submitted by Kieran Foster In partial fulfilment of the requirements for the award of Doctor of Philosophy De Montfort University, March 2019 Abstract This doctoral thesis is an industrial study of Hammer Film Productions, focusing specifically on the period of 1955-2000, and foregrounding the company’s unmade projects as primary case studies throughout. It represents a significant academic intervention by being the first sustained industry study to primarily utilise unmade projects. The study uses these projects to examine the evolving production strategies of Hammer throughout this period, and to demonstrate the methodological benefits of utilising unmade case studies in production histories. Chapter 1 introduces the study, and sets out the scope, context and structure of the work. Chapter 2 reviews the relevant literature, considering unmade films relation to studies in adaptation, screenwriting, directing and producing, as well as existing works on Hammer Films. Chapter 3 begins the chronological study of Hammer, with the company attempting to capitalise on recent successes in the mid-1950s with three ambitious projects that ultimately failed to make it into production – Milton Subotsky’s Frankenstein, the would-be television series Tales of Frankenstein and Richard Matheson’s The Night Creatures. Chapter 4 examines Hammer’s attempt to revitalise one of its most reliable franchises – Dracula, in response to declining American interest in the company. Notably, with a project entitled Kali Devil Bride of Dracula. Chapter 5 examines the unmade project Nessie, and how it demonstrates Hammer’s shift in production strategy in the late 1970s, as it moved away from a reliance on American finance and towards a more internationalised, piece-meal approach to funding.
