Custom Trip Report The Central Chinese province of Sichuan provided some notable challenges this year: still recovering from the catastrophic “Wenchuan 5.12” earthquake of 2008, the area is undergoing massive reconstruction. All very positive for the future of this scenically extraordinary Chinese region, but often a headache for tour arrangements, due to last minute traffic controls leading us to regularly rethink our itinerary in the Wolong area in particular, that was not far from the epicenter of that massive quake. Even in areas seemingly unaffected by the quake, huge road construction projects created similar challenges to achieving our original planned itinerary. However, in spite of regular shuffling and rethinking, the itinerary went ahead pretty much as planned with ALL sites visited. Other challenges came this year in the form of heavy regular rains that plagued us at Wawu Shan and low cloud that limited visibility during our time around the breathtaking Balang Mountain in the Wolong region. With some careful trickery, sneaking our way through week-long road blocks under cover of darkness, birding through thick and thin (mist, cloud and rains) we fought against all such challenges and came out on top. -

Survey guidelines for Australia’s threatened fish Guidelines for detecting fish listed as threatened under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 Authorship and acknowledgments This report updates and expands on a report prepared in May 2004 by Australian Museum ichthyologist John Pogonoski and approved by AMBS Senior Project Manager Jayne Tipping. The current (2011) report includes updates to the 2004 report and additional information regarding recently listed species, current knowledge of all the listed species and current survey techniques. This additional information was prepared by Australian Museum ichthyologists Dr Doug Hoese and Sally Reader. Technical assistance was provided by AMBS ecologists Mark Semeniuk and Lisa McCaffrey. AMBS Senior Project Manager Glenn Muir co- ordinated the project team and reviewed the final report. These guidelines could not have been produced without the assistance of a number of experts. Eggs are telolecithal, spherical, average 1.02 ± 0.004 (± S.E.) mm in diameter, have a smooth, slightly adhesive chorion without filaments, a translucent homogeneous yolk, display meroblastic cell division and follow the general pattern of teleost embryogenesis. Early, middle and late stages of embryonic development were completed on average at 16, 28 and 50 hours post fertilisation. The larvae have generalised perciform morphological development with no apparent larval specialisations. The body is moderately deep bodied and compressed laterally. Head spination is limited to the development of an opercular spine in postflexion larvae. Pigmentation is relatively heavy and uniform over the head and body. Large melanophores occur on the dorsal, lateral and ventral midlines. Squamation commenced in postflexion larvae from 7.5 mm preserved body length (BL) and was complete in all specimens greater than 10.3 mm. -

12 February 2020 The Chief Executive Officer City of Gold Coast PO Box 5042 GCMC QLD 9729 Via email: [email protected] Dear Mr Dickson Submission during round 2 of public consultation - proposed Major Update 2 & 3 to the Gold Coast City Plan - Our City Our Plan The Planning Institute of Australia (PIA) is the national body representing the planning profession, and planning more broadly, championing the role of planning in shaping Australia’s future. PIA facilitates this through strong leadership, advocacy and contemporary planning education. The Gold Coast Branch of the Queensland Division of PIA had the opportunity to review the proposed Major Update 2 & 3 (the proposed amendment) to the Gold Coast City Plan (City Plan) and provide comment to the City of Gold Coast (CoGC) as part of the first round of public consultation in November 2019. Similarly, we have also reviewed the changed aspects of the proposed amendment which are subject to round 2 of public consultation. Council is commended for responding to the initial round of public consultation by making some significant changes to the proposed amendment and providing the community with the ability to further review and comment on those changes. The introduction of updated environmental mapping to the amendment is also a positive inclusion. As acknowledged in our initial submission, it is understood that CoGC’s program of amendments to the City Plan are being undertaken on a staged basis, with numerous amendment packages underway. The changes contained within the proposed amendment form part of the broader delivery of CoGC’s program and pave the way toward ensuring the City Plan continues to support good planning outcomes for the Gold Coast. -

Conservation Advice for the Karst Springs and Associated Alkaline Fens of the Naracoorte Coastal Plain Bioregion
The Threatened Species Scientific Committee provided their advice to the Minister on 31 July 2020. The Minister approved this Conservation Advice on 3 December 2020 and agreed that no recovery plan is required at this time. Conservation Advice1 for the Karst springs and associated alkaline fens of the Naracoorte Coastal Plain Bioregion This document combines the approved conservation advice and listing assessment for the threatened ecological community. It provides a foundation for conservation action and further planning. Karst springs and alkaline fens, Ewen Ponds © Copyright, Anthony Hoffman Conservation Status The Karst springs and associated alkaline fens of the Naracoorte Coastal Bioregion is listed in the Endangered category of the threatened ecological communities list under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act). The ecological community was assessed by the Threatened Species Scientific Committee, who found it to be eligible for listing as Endangered and recommended that a recovery plan is not required at this time. The Committee’s assessment and recommendations are at Section 6. The Committee’s assessment of the eligibility against each of the listing criteria is: Criterion 1: Vulnerable Criterion 2: Endangered Criterion 3: Insufficient data Criterion 4: Endangered Criterion 5: Insufficient data Criterion 6: Insufficient data The main factors that make the threatened ecological community eligible for listing in the Endangered category are its historic losses to drainage, clearing and resulting fragmentation, and ongoing threats to its integrity and function, particularly from hydrological changes. The Karst springs and associated alkaline fens of the Naracoorte Coastal Plain Bioregion occurs within country (the traditional lands) of the Boandik and the Gunditjmara peoples.
