Preface With some hesitation at CBS, Cayuga Productions continued Twilight Zone for what would be its last season, with a thirty-six episode pipeline – a larger count than had been seen since its first year. Producer Bert Granet, who began producing in the previous season, was soon replaced by William Froug as he moved on to other projects. The fifth season has always been considered the weakest and, as one reviewer stated, “undisputably the worst.” Harsh criticism. The lopsidedness of Seasons 4 and 5 – with a smattering of episodes that egregiously deviated from the TZ mold, made for a series much-changed from the one everyone had come to know. A possible reason for this was an abundance of rather disdainful or at least less-likeable characters. Most were simply too hard to warm up to, or at the very least, identify with. But it wasn’t just TZ that was changing. Television was no longer as new a medium. “It was a period of great ferment,” said George Clayton Johnson. By 1963, the idyllic world of the 1950s was disappearing by the day. More grittily realistic and reality-based TV shows were imminent, as per the viewing audience’s demand and it was only a matter of time before the curtain came down on the kinds of shows everyone grew to love in the 50s. -

MADE IN AMERICA: EXPLORING THE HOLLYWOOD WESTERN RED RIVER (1948) – INTRODUCTORY LECTURE TRANSCRIPT Introductory Lecture: Red River (1948) Welcome to the Western. I’m glad you can be here today. Red River (1948) is a 1948 Western film produced by Howard Hawks and starring John Wayne and Montgomery Clift. The film’s supporting cast features Walter Brennan, Joanne Dru, Colleen Gray, Harry Carey, John Ireland, Hank Worden, Noah Beery, Jr., Harry Carey Jr., and Paul Fix. The screenplay was based on Borden Chase’s original story which was first serialized in The Saturday Evening Post in 1946 as “Blazing Guns on the Chisholm Trail.” The movie’s ending differs from that of the original story. In Chase’s Saturday Evening Post’s story, Cherry Valance shoots Tom Dunson dead in Abilene and Matt takes his body back to Texas to be buried on the ranch. Red River cost an estimated $3 million to make it did very well at the box office. In 1948, it grossed $5 and a half million domestically and worldwide it made over $9 million. It was a very, very popular movie. The film is also an art movie. It was nominated for Academy Awards for Best Film Editing by Christian Nyby and Best Writing Motion Picture Story by Borden Chase. John Ford was so impressed with John Wayne’s performance in Red River that he is reported to have said I didn’t know the big son of a bitch could act. In June 2008, the American Film Institute listed Red River as the fifth best film in the Western genre. -

John Wayne turned down the lead, suggesting James Arness (who remained for its entire run). Originating on radio (with William Conrad as Dillon), it moved to TV in September 1955. Its popularity spawned a number of copycats, but none would enjoy the longevity (and few the consistent quality) of this classic. FOR FURTHER STUDY: DIRECTED BY IDA LUPINO COLLECTION RESOURCES Rumored to have been born underneath a dining room table during a Zeppelin raid over London in World War I, by 1933, at sixteen years old, Ida Lupino arrived in Hollywood appearing in films such as Search for Beauty (1934), Ready for Love (1934) and Anything Goes (1936). By the 1940s, Lupino became known for starring roles in notable films including They Drive by Night (1940), High Sierra (1941) and The Man I Love (1946). At the end of the decade, the actress founded her own independent production company where she would write, produce and direct several films – an uncommon accomplishment for any actor of her generation, especially as one of the only women directors in the industry during this period. As a feature film director, Lupino frequently captured a common theme of post-World World II domestic alienation, exploring ordinary citizens struggling amid Ida Lupino was one of the few women working behind social issues such as unwanted pregnancy (Not the camera in both film and television during the 1940s Wanted, 1949), polio (Never Fear, 1949) and rape – 1970s. In addition to her credits as a writer, director and producer, she continued to perform throughout her (Outrage, 1950). While active behind the camera, career. The pilot occurred in two parts, with the first part being a special hour-long broadcast of The Adventures of Superman (normally presented as half-hour episodes) and the second being an hour-long pilot for Perry Mason. Unfortunately, the people behind Perry Mason decided to scrap their pilot after realizing that the intrepid lawyer and his stories should be wholly based on science, not science fiction and fantasy, which is what The Adventures of Superman involved. This also meant scrapping the backdoor pilot – the special hour-long episode of The Adventures of Superman. Of course, none of the above actually happened. No, it didn’t, but it is a “fun” way of imagining how these two beloved television series could be linked with one another. -

NOTES ON JEFFREY HUNTER AND HIS FILMS by Jim Meyer "Jeffrey Hunter is beautiful!" a girl friend gurgled to me some 15 years ago. And indeed he was, as any man not envious of Hunter's impressive 6' 1" height and blue-eyed, brown-haired handsomeness must admit. As is well enough known, many film actors have little more to offer audiences than handsomeness. But far too many critics (men and women alike) too quickly tabbed the exceptionally hand- some actor "beautiful but bland." But teen-age girls didn't mind. Many didn't care whether he could act. In Jeffrey Hunter they saw (or thought they saw) a dream prince, a husky young god, who could fulfill their most imaginative fantasies. Less dazzled male viewers saw something else: a man who was handsome enough for them to resent, largely, one suspects, because many of them wished that his good looks belonged to them, and, not being able to measure up, consoled themselves by insisting that he couldn't act and wouldn't last long in films. Obviously, Hunter had to work twice as hard as many another actor of his type to prove he was a good actor. I believe he succeeded although he never became a superstar. Did Hunter's good looks make him arrogant, overbearing, and hard to work with? Possibly not, when one recalls that Jean Peters, a co-star of his, once went out of her way to observe that his courtesy toward and consideration for her would be remarkable anywhere but especially in Hollywood. -

The John Ford Collection
The John Ford Collection The John Ford collection of manuscripts at the Lilly Library offers a view of Ford's entire motion picture career, from the silent era to his last movie in 1966. The material in this collection was acquired from Ford's children and grandson after his death . It was used extensively, but not exhaustively, by Ford's grandson Dan Ford in writing his biography Pappy: The Life of John Ford and includes much of the research material accumulated by Dan Ford for his book. The collection covers the years from 1906 to 1976 and contains approximately seven thousand items, of which twenty-five hundred are correspondence. John Ford was born Sean Aloysius Feeney in Portland, Maine, in 1895. He changed his name after joining his older brother Fran cis, who had taken the name of Ford, in Hollywood in 1913. He began his career as a prop man, stunt man, and actor, moving to directing in 1917 with a two-reeler entitled The Tornado. He spent the rest of his life directing films, through the transition from silents to sound, making over 130 in all and winning six Academy Awards. From 1917 until 1930 Ford directed at least 66 films, a great many of which were westerns starring the cowboy actor Harry Carey. Early in his career Ford was most often associated with Universal Studio but by the early twenties he was under contract to the Fox Film Corporation (later the Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation) until after World War II. It was at Fox that he had his first major success, with The Iron Horse in 1924.
