GREENBOOK 2019 Sustainable Agriculture Demonstration Grant Project Descriptions and Results GREENBOOK 2019 Sustainable Agriculture Demonstration Grant project descriptions and results GREENBOOK 2019 It’s my honor to be able to introduce the Minnesota Department of Agriculture’s (MDA) 2019 edition of the annual Greenbook. As Minnesota’s new Commissioner of Agriculture, I’m proud to support these 22 projects funded through the Sustainable Agriculture Demonstration Grant Program, a component of the Agricultural Growth, Research, and Innovation (AGRI) Program. I’ve been a long-time supporter of these programs and believe the projects presented here are great examples of the innovative ideas Minnesota farmers and researchers are exploring and testing to make farming in Minnesota more productive and sustainable. Recipients were awarded up to $25,000 for forward-thinking agricultural initiatives. I can’t highlight every project here in my introduction, but I’d like to! From finding peony varieties that can grow and flourish in the north, to determining the most effective pasture types for bringing lambs to market weight in one growing season, to determining the effects of cover crops on soil temperature and soil moisture in the southwest, these projects are fundamental to the future of agriculture. The Sustainable Agriculture Demonstration Grant Program is dedicated to improving and shaping the future; many of the previous grant projects have focused on practices that have become widely adopted, such as integrated pest management and cover cropping. In Greenbook 2019, you’ll meet an enthusiastic group of grantees who are focusing on ways to increase energy and labor efficiency, reduce purchased inputs, and improve both the environment and their bottom line. And, they’re willing to share their successes and challenges with you. To learn more about any of the projects, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with the grantee. Our Sustainable Agriculture Demonstration Grants support innovative on-farm research and demonstrations. They fund projects that explore sustainable agriculture practices and systems that are likely to make farming more profitable, resource efficient, and personally satisfying. In the Greenbook, grantees share their observations and experiences so that other citizens can benefit from them. ABOUT AGRI The Minnesota Legislature created the Agricultural Growth, Research, and Innovation (AGRI) Program in 2013 to advance the state’s agricultural and renewable energy industries. The AGRI Program awards grants and other types of financial assistance to create agricultural jobs and profitable businesses. Farmers, agricultural businesses, schools, researchers, and county fairs can apply to several different AGRI grant programs. AGRI grants focus on areas of greatest opportunity and potential economic impact. These investments have resulted in increased production, employment, market expansion, and improved production and processing efficiencies since the program launched in 2013. Grants fund research or demonstrations on Minnesota farms. Funding is from the Agricultural Growth, Research, and Innovation Program (AGRI). PROGRAM DESCRIPTION The Department has received over 1,187 grant applications and approved over $4.2 million in funding for 358 projects since the program began in 1989. Project categories include: Alternative Markets, Specialty Crops, Cropping Systems, Soil Fertility, Energy, and Livestock. The active grant projects, being conducted throughout the state of Minnesota in 2018, are described in Greenbook 2019. Grants provide a maximum of $25,000 for two or three year on-farm research or demonstration projects. Starting in 2019, the maximum grant can be $50,000 when the grantee provides a dollar for dollar match on the amount above $25,000. These projects by Minnesota farmers, educational institutions, individuals at educational institutions, or nonprofit organizations demonstrate farming methods or systems that increase energy efficiency or production, reduce adverse effects on the environment, and show economic benefits for a farm by reducing costs or improving marketing opportunities. A Technical Review Panel evaluates the applications on a competitive basis and makes recommendations

Little* n the 14 September 1967 issue of the Vancouver Sun, popular Icolumnist Penny Wise waxed nostalgic: It was Saturday evening at Bowen Island, midsummer. The good ship Lady Alexandra sidled up to the long pier to disgorge close to 1,000 young passengers, all on the Moonlight Cruise to spend the night dancing at the big island pavilion. Fourteen hundred more happy people, from one to 90 years, piled onto the emptied Lady Alex to go back to Vancouver after a 10-hour day of picnicking on the half dozen well-organized Union Steamship grounds. At the luxurious Bowen Inn guests enjoyed a leisurely, late dinner. Lawn bowlers rolled the last ball of the day along the eight lovely greens. Tired riders guided the saddle horses to the barn. Hikers straggled in from the trip to beautiful Lake Killarney. Visiting launches chugged quietly in to tie up for the night. A few late swimmers swam. Beach fires started to blaze; the sun’s last glow colored the west; the moon loomed in the east. Soon from the dance pavilion came the music of Barney Potts’ band ... “How Deep is the Ocean” ... “We Just Couldn’t Say Goodby” ... “Sundown” ... “Ain’t Misbehavin’” ... It was those lazy, crazy, hazy days of summer during Bowen Island’s heyday – the mid 1930s.     SS Belcarra Shipwrecked 100 Years Ago Researched and written by Ralph Drew, Belcarra, BC, March 2010. (Revised: April 7, 2010) One hundred years ago, a vessel that has historical significance to Indian Arm and Belcarra was shipwrecked. At 4:00 a.m. on September 17th, 1910, the coastal steamer SS Belcarra ran onto the rocks in Jervis Inlet. At the time the SS Belcarra was owned by the Sechelt Steamship Company and was operating on the coastal run along the Sunshine Coast carrying passengers and cargo from Vancouver to Jervis Inlet with landings at Cowan‘s Point, Tunstall Bay, Grantham‘s Landing, Gibson‘s Landing, Sechelt, Secret Cove and Pender Harbour. The SS Belcarra began its life in 1902 as the single-decked coastal freighter SS Unican — the vessel was 96 feet (29.3 meters) long, 20 feet (6.1 meters) wide, with a displacement of 89 tons. The steamer was built in Vancouver for The United Canneries of British Columbia Ltd.; hence the name Unican. The Terminal Steamship Company purchased the SS Unican in 1906, overhauled the original vessel, added a new passenger cabin, and re-launched the vessel on April 1st, 1907, as the SS Belcarra with Captain Anderson of the steamer Defiance in command. Initially, the SS Belcarra ran from Vancouver five days a week in the summer and three times a week in the winter, supplying the lumber camps and summer cottages of Indian Arm. Fast passenger steamers are usually associated with British Columbia coast shipping, and yet, the more prosaic tug boats, tankers, and fish packers, if less spectacular, are just as important to the economy of the province. Coasting steamers as cargo carriers are, in fact, in process of being eclipsed by scows and barges, which, in the sheltered waters of the coast, are more cheaply operated than self-propelled freighting vessels. Indus• trial communities, dependent on water transportation, are, nevertheless, scattered along the entire coast line.
